[SOLVED] Question about a file that scans hang up on - System.Data.dll

After cleaning a laptop and returning it to my niece I thought it would be a good idea to look over her dads laptop as she was using it during the cleaning process.

I do not know that it is infected but both Malwarebytes and ESET hang up on the following file:

C:\Windows\Microsoft.Net\assembly\GAC_64\System.Data\v4.0_4.0.0...\System.Data.dll

I find it puzzling as I have the same operating system and a can drill down to the same location on my pc but don't have any issues with scans hanging up on it.

It looks legit to my untrained eye and I am just wondering if anyone else has experienced this or have any idea why this would happen.

Must have been the size, it hung for about 45 minutes then just now plugged on past it.

Re: Question about a file that scans hang up on.

Run a chkdsk for partition problems.

From administrator cmd prompt
Code:
chkdsk /f /r

You will be prompted to schedule a scan because Windows cannot unmount the drive... Select yes to the prompt, then reboot the system. chkdsk will run before windows boots.

Once complete and Windows boots again run a file verification.

From administrator cmd prompt
Code:
sfc /scannow

GZ,

Thank you for the reply.

I will follow your instructions but since the scan has made it past the file I mentioned I will let it complete before doing so.

What is the file size?

My system - ~3.1 MB -

Code:
Microsoft Windows [Version 6.1.7601]
Copyright (c) 2009 Microsoft Corporation. All rights reserved.

C:\Windows\system32>dir C:\Windows\Microsoft.NET\assembly\GAC_64\System.Data\v4.0_4.0.0.0__b77a5c561934e089\System.Data.dll
 Volume in drive C is Windows7 x64
 Volume Serial Number is 289F-AF69

 Directory of C:\Windows\Microsoft.NET\assembly\GAC_64\System.Data\v4.0_4.0.0.0__b77a5c561934e089

06/13/2012 21:55 [COLOR=#ff0000]3,116,376[/COLOR] [COLOR=#0000ff]System.Data.dll[/COLOR]
               1 File(s) 3,116,376 bytes
               0 Dir(s) 18,510,327,808 bytes free

C:\Windows\system32>

ESET, MB, etc... should scan that file in <1 second.

I suggest you follow the advice given by GZ.

Anything you want me to relay while this is running or just see how she goes after the sfc scan?

It may take a while, depending on the speed and condition of the HDD. It will automatically boot into Windows once the scan is complete... You should be able to access the Chkdsk log from event viewer once Windows loads.

the SFC scan will either tell you there were no violations, or tell you that it repaired files and/or couldn't repair files... For now, just let us know how each scan completes.

RGR THT..I will give you this tho

windows replaced bad clusters in file 83014 of name \windows\micros~1.net\assembly\gac_64\system.datav40__040~1.0__\system~1.dll.

looks familiar eh?

Yes... Does sound a little familliar!

The SFC is now quite important... SFC should detect corruption and repair the .dll file if it is corrupted.

Also, what Operating System is this??

I suggest an immediate backup to prevent data loss.

it is windows 7 home premium 64bit and will consider the back up but there is nothing of importance on the machine but I will leave that up to him.

Was that from chkdsk?

Get entire chkdsk results from the Event Viewer Application log -
START | type eventvwr.msc | Windows Logs | Application

Well... Windows 7 has a built in Image backup... You can make image DVD's of the HDD and restore the OS to a new HDD from them...

It would be a good idea... Especially since a failing hard drive will negate the OEM partition...
