Probs w/ Background Intelligent Transfer Service, Windows Update & Limited Ethernet

Pretty sure the problem started when I updated from Windows 8 to 8.1. I have looked a lot of different forums online and ran "DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth" according to what one user suggested. This was able to find and fix some corruptions but there were still others that could not be fixed. I also ran the SFCfix on Thursday evening and generated the attached report (SFCdetails). I just ran the SFCfix right now and attached the CBS.zip and SFCfix report from today as well. I am still unable to update windows, windows defender, and I have a caution triangle indicating limited ethernet connectivity. The Background Intelligent Transfer Service is also unresponsive.

I would appreciate any help that you could provide with this matter.

thanks,

m

Hi,

To confirm, can you get on the internet at all with this machine?

-Stephen

Re: Probs w/ Background Intelligent Transfer Service, Windows Update & Limited Ethern

Yes, I actually think the internet is fine. I checked my mbs and it was very high (over 300mbs). Yet, there's still a caution symbol "limited ethernet" icon that won't go away.

Re: Probs w/ Background Intelligent Transfer Service, Windows Update & Limited Ethern

Ok, thanks.

I'm going to replace the corrupt file detected by the SFC, but I highly doubt that this is the cause of the issue you are having.

SFCFix Script

Warning: this fix is specific to the user in this thread. No one else should follow these instructions as it may cause more harm than good. If you are after assistance, please start a thread of your own.

  1. Download SFCFix.exe (by niemiro) and save this to your Desktop.
  2. Download the file below, SFCFix.zip, and save this to your Desktop.
  3. Save any open documents and close all open windows.
  4. On your Desktop, you should see two files: SFCFix.exe and SFCFix.zip.
  5. Drag the file SFCFix.zip onto the file SFCFix.exe and release it.
  6. SFCFix will now process the script.
  7. Upon completion, a file should be created on your Desktop: SFCFix.txt.
  8. Copy (Ctrl + C) and Paste (Ctrl + V) the contents of this file into your next post for me to analyse please - put [CODE][/CODE] tags around the log to break up the text.

https://app.box.com/s/wkue3gmkit5s4ud6ac1b

Once you've done that, can you export your Event Viewer logs for me to look at?

- open Event Viewer (eventvwr.msc)
- expand the Custom Views category (left click on the > next to the words "Custom Views")
- right click on Administrative Events
- select "Save all Events in Custom View as..."
- save the file as Admin.evtx
- zip up the file (right click on it, select "Send to", select "Compressed (zipped) folder")
- upload it with your next post (if it's too big, then upload it to a free file-hosting service and post a link here).

Re: Probs w/ Background Intelligent Transfer Service, Windows Update & Limited Ethern

Ok I ran the SFCfix.exe file. It generated the SFCFix.txt on my desktop. I'm not exactly sure what "put
Code:
tags around the log to break up the text" means. I'm sorry. I've never done this before. So I guess I'll wait to post the logs. Also, upon opening the Event Viewer, and error message popped up "Event log service is unavailable. Verify that the service is running." After I click "ok" the event viewer stays open.

Re: Probs w/ Background Intelligent Transfer Service, Windows Update & Limited Ethern

Hi,

Just paste the SFCFix log as it is - CODE tags don't really matter.

Hmm.. that event viewer message is interesting... Please download and run Farbar Service Scanner from here: Farbar Service Scanner Download, place a checkbox in everything and click Scan. Paste that log in your next reply.

Re: Probs w/ Background Intelligent Transfer Service, Windows Update & Limited Ethern

It looks like you double clicked SFCFix and ran it without the script.

Can you run it again, making sure to drag the SFCFix.zip file here onto the SFCFix.exe icon.

-Stephen

Re: Probs w/ Background Intelligent Transfer Service, Windows Update & Limited Ethern

So, let me clarify, I should drag the zip file over the exe icon. Then, run SFCfix again, generate a new report and paste that? Thanks, btw, I really appreciate this. I've literally spent hours on the internet trying to research this problem to no avail.

Re: Probs w/ Background Intelligent Transfer Service, Windows Update & Limited Ethern

When you drag the zip file over the exe, it will automatically run the script I provided and open the report.

Re: Probs w/ Background Intelligent Transfer Service, Windows Update & Limited Ethern

Perfect.

Can you run SFC once more for good measure:

SFC Scan

  1. Press the Windows Key on your keyboard and X to open up the Power User Tasks Menu
  2. Click (or tap) Command Prompt (admin)
  3. When command prompt opens, copy and paste the following commands into it, press enter after each

    sfc /scannow

Wait for this to finish before you continue (approximately 15 minutes)

    copy %windir%\logs\cbs\cbs.log %userprofile%\Desktop\cbs.txt

  4. This will create a file, cbs.txt on your Desktop. Please attach this to your next post.

I've now packed up for the evening, I'll take another look at your issue as soon as I get the chance

Re: Probs w/ Background Intelligent Transfer Service, Windows Update & Limited Ethern

Next steps?

Re: Probs w/ Background Intelligent Transfer Service, Windows Update & Limited Ethern

Hi,

The SFC log is now clear - SFC no longer detects any issues. Let's try another tool.

Download MiniToolBox from here: MiniToolBox Download and then run it. Select the following options:

2014-10-2220_39_21-MiniToolBoxbyFarbar_zpse326a0ba.png

Press OK. The program will now collect the information I need - this may take a few minutes. Upon completion, a log will open. Copy and Paste it into your next reply.

Good news! My Ethernet connection no longer indicates limited connectivity, so thanks!

Here is the log you requested. I know some of the errors here were from games I downloaded.
