Hello. I have an issue with certain Windows 8.1 modern appscrashing: namely Skype, Bing Finance (aKa Money), adope photoshop express, windows reading list. They all basically crash in the same way: they appear to be loading and then they auto-minimize to the desktop without any error message. These problems all started after i upgraded from windows 8 to 8.1. Initially the errors worth with windows update and the microsoft store. I managed to fix those corruptions. They now work fine, and the only issues I have pertain to these certain Apps. They are not essential but it is quite annoying.

The following has already been done
1. SFC /scannow (no errors)
2. DISM /online-image /scanhealth (no errors)
3. Running the microsoft store app troubleshooter generally gives me the following report:

Windows Store Cache May be Damaged
Windows Store Configuration May be Damaged
Display Drivers Might be Out of Date

I have these things set to fix automatically (via Advanced settings). After the fixes are applied, it says to try again, and again I have the same problem.

4. Re-synced windows app licenses
5. Reset windows store
6. Did a clean uninstall of all the apps using a PowerShell script I had downloaded from Microsoft
7. Checked that ALL APPLICATION PACKAGES have the proper permissions

My event viewer log for Administrative Events look like this: (this is the error for MSN money/Bing Finance app crashing)

App <AppexFinance> crashed with an unhandled Javascript exception. App details are as follows: Display Name:<Money>, AppUserModelId: <Microsoft.BingFinance_8wekyb3d8bbwe!AppexFinance> Package Identity:<Microsoft.BingFinance_3.0.4.212_x64__8wekyb3d8bbwe> PID:<7156>. This is the error I receive with skype

I also noted this error when the windows store is re-registered:

DeleteAppContainerProfile failed for AppContainer winstore_cw5n1h2txyewy with error 0x80070091.

Do I need to manually delete the winstore local app directory? What else can I do?

Any help will be appreciated!

Thanks

Hey,

Thank you for posting your question. I’m glad to help you in regards to your Windows 8.1 modern apps crashes. I’ll appreciate if you could provide more details about your computer specifications.

First of all I would like you to check whether the problem is associated with the computer memory. It is commonly seen that faulty memory causes your computer to restart automatically.

1. Press Windows Key + X.
2. Select Search.
3. Type “memory” in the Search Box.
4. Click the Settings icon.
5. Click “Diagnose your computer’s memory problems” in to the Search Results page.
6. The Windows Memory Diagnostic tool will open.
7. Click the “Restart now and check for problems” button. The computer will restart automatically and conduct several memory tests to resolve any issues found.

Secondly, use the ZombieSoftFix in order to check for conflicts with shell-extensions, ActiveX, DLL registration issues. After successfully completing the process, please restart your computer. If your problem still persists, you may have to increase the Paging File Size. Inadequate Paging File Size may also be the reasons.

1. Right click the Computer icon on your desktop.
2. Select Properties from the context menu.
3. Click “Advanced system settings” link.
4. System Properties dialog will be displayed.
5. Click Settings (Performance) -> Advanced.
6. Click Change (Virtual Memory).
7. Uncheck the box named “Automatically manage the paging file size for all drives”.
8. Select the system drive, usually drive C:\
9. Select “Custom size” option.
10. Increase the current paging file size, and then click Set button.
11. Click OK | OK | OK.
12. Restart your computer for the changes to take effects.

I hope you find my answer very helpful!

I have the exact same symptoms that Simotach has described. While I have not executed all of the same diagnostic steps, I am seeing the same app failure mode on one app (MSN Money), and the same reports from the Microsoft App diagnostic. Has any solution been found to this problem? I also can report that the Microsoft Mail app refuses to launch any hyperlinks in a browser.

When have the issue started? I've just noticed I'm having the same issue as well, even though the apps were working few days ago.

OK, it seems that one of this month Microsoft updates corrupts HKCU hive. I was not able to fix it due to many registry keys being gone, so I had to do a System Restore, which resolve the issue. I was able to reproduce the issue by installing the patches again.

I will try P2V my laptop, so I could play a bit to find out which update (and, luckily, how) corrupts the hive.

P.S. Simotach's issue seems to be different, while rb1000's one sounds the same (unless it started prior 9th of Dec).

My issue started within the last 30-60 days and had been working perfectly previously. I will try a system restore when I get back to that system.
