Hi All,

I downloaded and ran the SFCFix tool, but it crashed with an unhandled exception (please see attached). The dump file was uploaded separately to the developer the notes said.

When I execute sfc /scannow from the cmd line as administrator, I get the following:

C:\WINDOWS\system32>sfc /scannow

Beginning system scan. This process will take some time.

Beginning verification phase of system scan.
Verification 13% complete.

Windows Resource Protection could not perform the requested operation."

Using the various DISM commands I get the following:

C:\WINDOWS\system32>DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /CheckHealth

Deployment Image Servicing and Management tool
Version: 10.0.19041.844

Image Version: 10.0.19043.1526

The component store is repairable.
The operation completed successfully.

C:\WINDOWS\system32>
C:\WINDOWS\system32>
C:\WINDOWS\system32>DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /ScanHealth

Deployment Image Servicing and Management tool
Version: 10.0.19041.844

Image Version: 10.0.19043.1526

[== 4.9% ]
Error: 4448

The WOF driver encountered a corruption in the compressed file's Resource Table.

The DISM log file can be found at C:\WINDOWS\Logs\DISM\dism.log

C:\WINDOWS\system32>DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth

Deployment Image Servicing and Management tool
Version: 10.0.19041.844

Image Version: 10.0.19043.1526

[== 3.8% ]
Error: 4448

The WOF driver encountered a corruption in the compressed file's Resource Table.

The DISM log file can be found at C:\WINDOWS\Logs\DISM\dism.log

Please could you advise. Thanks in advance for any help or suggestions.

Hi All,

I think the issues I had with my desktop PC were caused by the recent Windows Update: March 8, 2022—KB5011487 (OS Builds 19042.1586, 19043.1586, and 19044.1586). The update seems to have not installed correctly. It is shown as being installed but I am unable to uninstall it. I downloaded the update from the Microsoft Update Catalog, but it wouldn't install again because it is already installed.
Unfortunately, I don't have a System Restore point to revert back the Operating System. This feature seems to be disabled by default in Windows 10. I have now enabled this feature, but I don't have a good System Restore point saved yet.

Hi I'm Gary R,

I'm a Security Analyst, and a Windows Update Trainee, and I'd like to help you with your problems.

As a trainee, any instructions I give you must first be checked by a qualified update expert, before I post them. This will by necessity introduce some delay to any of my replies, so please be patient.

  • Please open Windows Explorer and browse to the ... C:\Windows\Logs\CBS ... folder.
  • Right click on it, and select ... Compress to zip file
  • A message will appear stating, "Windows cannot create the Compressed (zipped) Folder here. Do you want it to be placed on the desktop instead?"
    • Answer Y to create a folder CBS.zip on your Desktop.
  • Please attach it to your next post.
    • If the file is too large, please upload it to a file sharing service and provide the link to it in your next reply.
    • Examples of services to upload to are WeTransfer and TransferKit and SendFileOnline

Hi Gary,

Thanks very much for your reply. I followed your instructions and created the CBS.zip file on my desktop (please find attached). It is 12.9MB in size.

Thanks for your help.

Dear Gary,

Many thanks for sending the SFCFix.zip file and the clear instructions. I followed your steps and have attached the output SFCFix.txt file that was created. The process looks to have worked quite well, although there were some failure messages about failing to backup certain files. Following this I restarted the computer and ran the command SFC /SCANNOW as administrator (please see attached screenshot). This progressed further than before, but failed at 25% with the same message: "Windows Resource Protection could not perform the requested operation".

I have attached a zip of the "C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\CBS.log" file as requested.

Thanks for all your help and support.

Kind regards,
Steven

Good Afternoon Gary,

Thanks for your further update fix. I followed the same procedure and the fix seemed to worked out without any errors (please see attached SFCFix.txt output file). I then rebooted the PC and ran the SFC /scannow command. However, this again failed at 25% with the same error message:

Microsoft Windows [Version 10.0.19043.1526]
(c) Microsoft Corporation. All rights reserved.

C:\WINDOWS\system32>sfc /scannow

Beginning system scan. This process will take some time.

Beginning verification phase of system scan.
Verification 25% complete.

Windows Resource Protection could not perform the requested operation.

Please find attached the latest zipped version of the C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\CBS.log.

Thanks very much for your help and support.

Kind regards,
Steven

Looking over your latest logs now.

As it's getting late, it will probably be some time tomorrow before I get back to you, and since I've got a few things that I need to attend to, possibly PM rather than AM.

Thanks for all your help, Gary. Not to worry - take your time. I look forward to hearing from you again.

Kind regards,
Steven

Having trouble sourcing some of the files that your latest logs are indicating need repair.

Which version of Windows 10 do you have installed, and do you have any language packages installed ?

See which version of Windows you have

Hi Gary,

Thanks for the update. We have Windows v10 Home installed:

OS Name: Microsoft Windows 10 Home
OS Version: 10.0.19043 N/A Build 19043

In terms of language packs, we have Chinese (Simplified, China) language pack installed (LanguageTag : zh-Hans-CN). I hope this helps.

Please let me know in case of any further questions.

Thanks for all your help.

Thanks, I'm going to need to setup a VM to see whether I can get clean copies of the necessary files, and it's probably going to take me a while, so probably going to be tomorrow at earliest before I can get back to you.

Sorry to be so late getting back to you. Had to set up two VMs to source the files we need, and it took a bit of time.

So anyway ...
