I had a hard disk error and had to restore my system from a previous image file, which was somewhat dated. The restore seemed to work OK in that I can now boot back into Windows. When I tried to to perform a Windows Update, I get the error "Windows Update cannot currently check for updates because the service is not running..."
I have checked the service is running and tried using the automated troubleshooter from the Microsoft site. That reported that missing or corrupt files could not be fixed. I have tried running SFC /scannow and got the error message that "... found corrupt files but unable to fix..."
Please help.
