Hi,

I need help with problems with System File Checker and Windows Update on my Windows 10 desktop computer.

When I run System file checker, I get the following (copied from Windows Powershell run as an administrator):

PS C:\Windows\system32> sfc /scannow
Beginning system scan. This process will take some time.

Windows Resource Protection could not perform the requested operation.
PS C:\Windows\system32>

Windows Update has been failing to install cumulative updates, although just this morning it did succeed in installing the March Malicious Software Removal Tool. The message I get when I try to download the cumulative update is

Some update files are missing or have problems. We'll try to download the update again later.
Error code: (0x80073712)

I tried to run SFCfix.exe according to the instructions on the Sysnative.com website, but it did not output a log file on the desktop, despite my having let it run for over an hour. The screen output is as follows:

Welcome to SFCFix by niemiro and sysnative.com.

That shouldn't have mattered but it didn't work so let's try the following instead.

FRST Fix
NOTICE: This script was written specifically for this user, for use on that particular machine. Running this on another machine may cause damage to your operating system
1. Please download Farbar Recovery Scan Tool and save it to your Desktop.
Note: You need to run the 64-bit Version so please ensure you download that one.
2. Download attached file and save it to the Desktop.
Note. It's important that both files, FRST64 and fixlist.txt are in the same location or the fix will not work (in this case...the desktop).
3. Run FRST64 by Right-Clicking on the file and choosing Run as administrator.
4. Press the Fix button just once and wait. If for some reason the tool needs a restart, please make sure you let the system restart normally. After that let the tool complete its run.
5. When finished FRST64 will generate a log on the Desktop (Fixlog.txt). Please post the contents of it in your reply.

OK. Please do the following.

1. Right-click your Start button and choose Programs and Features.
2. Click the Turn Windows features on or off link.
3. Your Windows Features dialog box should appear and it should fill in with all the features you can turn on or off. Important: Leave this window open while performing the next steps.
4. Download attached file and save it to the Desktop.
Note. It's important that both files, FRST64 and fixlist.txt are in the same location or the fix will not work (in this case...the desktop).
5. Run FRST64 by Right-Clicking on the file and choosing Run as administrator.
6. Press the Fix button just once and wait. If for some reason the tool needs a restart, please make sure you let the system restart normally. After that let the tool complete its run.

The Windows Features dialog box is not working properly. (I noticed this yesterday but forgot to mention it.) Yesterday it took a long time to populate (maybe five minutes) but eventually turned on. Today it is just stuck, although maybe it will eventually turn on.

Ahhh....yes another sign of registry corruption. Let it go for awhile and let me know if it populates. If it doesn't we will do something else.

OK, let's go a different direction to resolve this.

Backup Components Hive

  • Please download the Freeware RegBak from here: Acelogix Software - Download products
You will find it at the bottom of the page that the link brings you to.
  • Go ahead and install this program and accept all the defaults. After the last install screen the program should open.
  • Click the New Backup button. Accept the defaults and simply click Start.
  • When it says Finished successfully, click the Close button.

Let me know when this is complete.
