Good morning, i'm new of the forum. I'm Alan from Italy.
Sorry for my poor english, i try to do the best i can.
I found this forum after the research on google and thought to do a question about my problem.
I have problem with the installation of 6 updates of Windows 7 pro:
- KB3068708
- KB3071756
- KB3080149
- KB3097966
- KB3088195
- KB3060716

Everyday windows update downloads this updates, but when i shut down my laptop the installation does not end and give me errors.
In the last days i noticed that the main hard disk (SSD Samsung 850 Pro) was full (only 5gb free) and did not know why.
I solved with the standard function of windows 7 "Cleaning disk" (i hope that the translation is right).. I clean about 90Gb.. and the "Cleaning disk" function says that this 90Gb are Log of the windows Update. If I am not mistaken, the big folder is in: C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows\WER\ReportQueue\.
I don't know where should I start.
Can you help me please?

Thank you very much!

Alan from Italy

EDIT: Sorry i see only now that before post a new thread I must follow this guide: https://www.sysnative.com/forums/windows-update/4736-windows-update-forum-posting-instructions.html
I update this thread with the informations as soon as possible.
Sorry

For the CBS folder i see that is enormous! 46,6Gb uncompressed. If i compress should become smaller, but it is still enormous.
Do you need the whole folder (Also .cab files) or do you need only the CBS.log file? This file is 500mb uncompressed.
I await informations for the upload of the correct files.

Thank you
Alan

Hello and welcome

Due to the precise nature of your corruption, you will receive help from a user named LiquidTension. He's one of our senior trainees here who's in his final phrase of his studies and needs to gain some real world experience in specific areas of Windows Update. This means that he'll be assisting you, but that I will first need to double check and approve his fixes before he posts them to you. If anything this is a good thing for you because it means that you've got at least two of us watching over your thread, but it will unfortunately add a slight delay between each reply. I hope that you understand and can accept the need for us to train up new members in this way in order to carry on doing what we do here, however, if for any reason you object to this setup, I will happily take on your thread myself.

Thank you very much for your understanding. We'll be with you very shortly.

Thank you very much for the answer Brian!
No problem! I wait for LiquidTension!
Any solution you want to do for me is ok!

The only thing that would be nice to know as soon as possible is what i must do with the CBS folder (only CBS.log or entire folder), so i can organize me... because is very very big for an upload.
Thank you very much for the courtesy.
Alan

Hello,

Do you need the whole folder (Also .cab files) or do you need only the CBS.log file? This file is 500mb uncompressed.
Right now, I do not require your CBS folder. You will not need to upload the whole folder at any point.

Please do the following:

IGJdB0T.png
System Update Readiness Tool (SURT) Scan

  • Download and run the latest version of SURT.
  • Click Yes when prompted to install. Installation can take ~15 minutes. Please do not cancel.
  • Upon completion (when Installation Complete appears), copy the contents of the SURT log found atC:\Windows\Logs\CBS\CheckSUR.log and paste in your next reply.
  • Note: If the file is too large to attach, upload to a service such as Dropbox, One Drive or SendSpace and provide a direct download link in your next reply.

Hello LiquidTension, and thank you for the answer!

Update:

After the fix I try to update the system with windows update, and to my surprise all updates now are installed without problems, also the KB packages of the first post.

After run the "Cleaning disk" (i hope that the translation is right), now the free space is 90gb and the system is faster. The problem seems solved, but I wait for an opinion about the last log.

I notice that the folder windows\logs\CBS is about 30Gb. Eventually is possible to clean this folder in some way, or the file could be useful? I see in another PC, and the same folder is only 60Mb.

Thank you very much for your help.
Alan

Hi alan220387,

I'm pleased to hear your updates installed successfully. We need to double-check SFC is OK before finishing up.

Concerning your large CBS folder, we can address this once I've confirmed there are no remaining issues.

MgeHyNE.png
SFC /Scannow

  • Press the Windows Key
    pdKOQKY.png
+ r on your keyboard at the same time. Type Notepad and click OK.
  • Copy the three bold lines below and paste into the Notepad document:

    sfc /scannow
    timeout /t 120 /nobreak
    copy %windir%\logs\cbs\cbs.log "%userprofile%\Desktop\CBS.txt"
    del %0

  • Click Format. Ensure Wordwrap is unchecked.
  • Click File, Save As and name the file sfcscannow.bat.
  • Select All Files as the Save as type. Save the file to your Desktop.
  • Locate sfcscannow.bat
    lmRDSkT.png
on your Desktop. Right-click the file and click
    AVOiBNU.jpg
    Run as administrator.
  • Upon completion, a file (CBS.txt) will be created on your Desktop. Attach this file in your next reply.
  • Note: If the file is too large to attach, upload to a service such as Dropbox, One Drive or SendSpace and provide a direct download link in your next reply.

Hi alan220387,

Everything looks good.

For the large CBS folder we see at the end.
To reduce the size of your C:\Windows\Logs\CBS folder, you can delete any CbsPersist files.

Is there anything else I can help with?

Thank you for the answer LiquidTension!
In the CBS folder I have 2 kind of files: CBSpersist.log and CBSpersist.cab.
Can I delete both files?
I have also the CBS.log file. This file must remain? It's right?

For the rest is everything in order. The problem concerned the errors in windows update and consequently the continuous filling of the hard drive.
I didn't know what to do.. the only possibility for me was to restore the notebook with the image file.. but a lot of configuration and software would be lost.
With your help i solve the problem and now the Notebook is back to normal!
This is a very useful forum with very kind people.

Thank you very much!
Alan

Yes.

Go ahead and delete the CBSpersist files, but leave CBS.log.
