Hello,

I am currently having problems installing Windows updates on a Windows Server 2019.
Installed Build: 17763.1098
The error message I receive after the installation is: 0x80246007 + 0x800f0986.

In this regard, I have also already tried some standard troubleshooting:

1. Running the Windows Update troubleshooter.
2. A manual installation via the Windows Update Catalog.
3. Renaming the SoftwareDistribution and Catroot2 folders under C:\Windows\System32\ and then restarting the Windows Update services.
3. sfc /scannow
4. Repairing the image via DISM using the Windows Server 2022 ISO.

None of the actions have been successful so far.

Attached my CBS + ComponentBasedServicing hive.

Hi I'm Gary R,

I'm a Security Analyst, and a Windows Update Trainee, and I'd like to help you with your problems.

As a trainee there may be times when my instructions must first be checked by a qualified update expert, before I post them. This will by necessity introduce some delay when/if that occurs, so please be patient.

Can you please do the following for me ...

  • Navigate to C:\Windows\System32\Config and locate the COMPONENTS file.
  • Please copy this file to your desktop.
  • Note: If you receive an error that this file is in-use, simply reboot your computer and try again.
  • Right-click on this file on your desktop and select Send To...Compressed (zipped) folder. This will create a file named COMPONENTS.ZIP on your desktop.
  • The file will likely be too large to upload here, if so please upload to a file sharing service.
  • Examples of services to upload to are WeTransfer and TransferKit and SendFileOnline

Please post me the link to the file

Thanks. Looking over your problem now.

Got to setup and update a VM, so might be a while before I get back to you.

I will reply as soon as possible.

WARNING! The following fix is specific to the user's system in this thread only. No one else should follow these instructions, as it could damage your system.

  • Download SFCFix.exe and save it to your desktop.
  • Download the attachment SFCFix.zip and also save it on your desktop.
  • Save any work you have open, and close all programs.
  • Drag the SFCFix.zip file over the SFCFix.exe executable and release it.

  • SFCFix will launch, let it complete.
  • Once done, a file will appear on your desktop, called SFCFix.txt
  • Open the file, then copy and paste its content in your next reply.

Next ...

  • Click Search button and type Command Prompt
  • From the results, right click on the Command Prompt icon, and select Run as administrator
  • A Command Window will open.
  • Copy paste the command below into it, then press Enter
  • Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
  • Once DISM has finished running ...
    • If it completes successfully please try updating.
    • If successful, please let me know.
    • If unsuccessful .....
    • Please attach your ... C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\cbs.log ... to your next reply.
  • If the file is too large, upload it to a file sharing service, and post me the link.
  • Examples of services to upload to are WeTransfer and TransferKit and SendFileOnline

It's been 48 hours since I posted my fix for your problem, and I've not heard back from you.

DO YOU STILL NEED MY HELP ?

If I don't hear back from you within the next 24 hours I will presume not, and will close this topic.

Hello Gary R, the server needs a reboot. I'll reboot the server tonight. Afterwards I'll reply ...

I attached the CBS Log - maybe you see any errors there.

OK, get back to me after you've rebooted.

If you still have problems, please post me the SFCFix.txt I asked for earlier, and the CBS.log created after the reboot.

After reboot it looks good. OS Build is 17763.4131 now. Thank you for your help!

You're welcome.

Glad we were able to resolve your problem.
