Hi Guys,

First off, having read through a number of threads on this forum, you guys seems to really know what you're at! So hopefully you can assist me.

I am trying to install Win 7 SP1 onto a computer - it keeps failing during the install.

The error I have been receiving is in relation to a missing component.

In the CBS Log, I see the following

Code:

I have run your tool SFCFix.exe and it has identified a number of errors, which were also picked up by the Windows Update Readiness Tool. (Log attached)

Can you advise on how to correct these errors?

Thanks a million!

Hi There,

It is failing about 75% way through the install of Service Pack 1.

I am not sure where the copy of Windows came from as this machine belongs to a non-techy friend of mine who I am trying to help out - I 'think' the install was from VLK Media - Its Win7 Pro 64 Bit if that helps?

I have just started another attempt to install SP1 again, it takes about 30 minutes to get to the point where it crashes out - I will take some screenshots at this point and post them in my next reply, once I have them.

Thanks!

Attached are two screenshots, one during the install (very shortly before the error) - and one of the error itself.

Thanks

Hi and welcome to Sysnative. Let's see if we can get you sorted out. Can you provide me the following logs please? Zip them up and attach them. If they are too large ( >7MB) then please upload to SendSpace and provide a link.

C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\CheckSUR.log
C:\Windows\Inf\Setupapi.dev.log
C:\Windows\Setupact.log
C:\Windows\Setuperr.log

Thanks.

I see a couple things that likely need fixed before SP1 will install. Here's the first one from the setupapi.dev.log.
Code:
!!! sto: Failed to find driver update 'C:\Windows\WinSxS\amd64_winusb.inf_31bf3856ad364e35_6.1.7600.16385_none_53e9d62d2f5260f8\winusb.inf' in Driver Store. Error = 0x00000490

To try to remedy this, please do the following.

Install Driver Manually
1. Click your Start button and type cmd in the search box.
2. Right-click on cmd that appears in the search results and select Run as administrator. Click Yes to the User Account Control dialog if it appears.
3. Copy/Paste the following into the command-prompt window and then hit enter on the keyboard. Note: You will need to right-click your mouse and select paste in order to paste into the window. You can't use the keyboard shortcut.
pnputil -a C:\Windows\WinSxS\amd64_winusb.inf_31bf3856ad364e35_6.1.7600.16385_none_53e9d62d2f5260f8\winusb.inf

4. You will likely get a prompt that looks like the following. Please click "Install this driver software anyway".
Capture.JPG

5. If all goes well, in the command prompt window you should see text that resembles "Driver package added successfully".

Let me know how this step goes please. Thanks.

Thanks!

I ran that and it seems to work fine. See attached screenshot.

Should I try install SP1 now?

I see another few items that may need to be resolved before SP1 can install but I say go for it. Let me know the results.

OK Great, I've started the install - It will be about 20-30 minutes before we know the result.

Thanks

I suspected it might. Let's fix the other things I saw. Please do the following.

Step#1 - System Update Readiness Tool (SUR)
1. Download and run the following file. If you already have it downloaded you can use that one.
2. When it asks you if you wish to install, please answer yes. Note: It could take 15 minutes or more to run. Please don't cancel.
3. You will get an Installation Complete screen when it's done running.
4. Please attach the log from the following location. C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\CheckSUR.log. Also, please attach a fresh copy of C:\Windows\Inf\setupapi.dev.log
Please Note:: if the file is too big to upload to your next post please upload via a service such as Dropbox or One Drive or SendSpace and just provide the link.

Thanks. The driver issue is verified to be resolved so now I need the following log.

SFC Scan

  1. Click on the Start
    Start%20Orb.jpg
button and in the search box, type Command Prompt
  2. When you see Command Prompt on the list, right-click on it and select Run as administrator
  3. When command prompt opens, copy and paste the following commands into it, press enter after each

    sfc /scannow

Wait for this to finish before you continue

    copy %windir%\logs\cbs\cbs.log %userprofile%\Desktop\cbs.txt
  4. This will create a file, cbs.txt on your Desktop. Please attach this to your next post.

Please Note:: if the file is too big to upload to your next post please upload via a service such as Dropbox or One Drive or SendSpace and just provide the link.

Hi Brian,

Apologies for the delay in getting this one over to you, I was AFK for an hour there.

It ran and detected some errors that it couldnt fix.

Code:
C:\Users\Philip>sfc /scannow

Beginning system scan. This process will take some time.

Beginning verification phase of system scan.
Verification 100% complete.
Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix some of th
em.
Details are included in the CBS.Log windir\Logs\CBS\CBS.log. For example
C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\CBS.log

C:\Users\Philip>

Here is the log file.

Thanks,

OK, so now we just have the original error that you reported in your initial post to correct.

Code:

I think a registry key is missing and we need to add it. To verify this I will need your COMPONENTS hive. Please do the following.

Retrieve Components Hive
1. Navigate to C:\Windows\System32\Config and locate the COMPONENTS file.
2. Please copy this file to your desktop.
Note: If you receive an error that this file is in-use, simply reboot your computer and try again.
3. Right-click on this file on your desktop and select Send To...Compressed (zipped) folder. This will create a file named COMPONENTS.ZIP on your desktop.
4. The file will likely be too large to upload here so please upload to SendSpace and just provide the link here.

Thank you. I need another piece of your registry please.

Step#1 - Export CBS Registry Key

  1. Click on the Start
    Start%20Orb.jpg
button and in the search box, type regedit
  2. When you see regedit on the list, right-click on it and select Run as administrator
  3. When regedit opens, using the left pane, navigate to the following registry key and select it by clicking on it once.

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Component Based Servicing

  4. Once selected, click File > Export....
  5. Change the Save as type: to Registry Hive Files (*.*)
  6. Name this file CBS (with no file extension) and save it to your Desktop.

Once done please upload this file via Dropbox or One Drive or SendSpace.
