Hi - I have 2 identical Alienware 18 laptops, used for different purposes. One fails to install KB3000850, the other did so OK. The former always runs with nVidia 770M twin graphics, while the latter always runs Intel HD4600 built-in graphics, which may not be important(?). Both run Avast, completely up-to-date, but turning it off does not seem to affect the outcome. On checking the laptop that DID install KB3000850 OK, prior to tackling the PC that DID NOT, sfcfix.exe found 2 corruptions on it see below. I'm not sure if if the CBS.zip attachment has worked, a the instructions (paperclip?) do not match the actuality of the website.

Anyway, this is problem one of two - anyone know what this is and how to fix it?

Regards
Steve

UPDATE - after searching a bit more conscientiously, I found a fix here:
The Tech Cookbook – Windows 8 update (KB3022345) causing corrupt files

I will now go on to check the laptop with the main problem of not installing KB3000850 !

Thanks

Hi and welcome to Sysnative. It wasn't clear if you still needed assistance with this issue.

Thanks - yes I will need help with first laptop please, but I need some time to gather the evidence. The second laptop seems A-OK now.
Back in a few days!....

---------

I spoke too soon.... The laptop that was fixed became broken again - running sfc /scannow threw up errors again! I then ran SFCFix.exe, and it claims that the "restore operation completed successfully" etc etc....

I have a question - what caused the corruption in just 24 hours ? I have installed no updates or programs. I have however run Wise DiskClean and Wise Registry Clean, but I don't see how that would corrupt files... Anyone know what's going on? Here's the SFCFix output:

There is no need to worry about that error. It's a known issue that Microsoft is aware of. You can safely ignore. Information on that follows.

This update contains the following two manifests that are occasionally updated by the Diagnostic Tracking Service:

telemetry.ASM-WindowsDefault.json
utc.app.json

The two files are marked as static files in the update. When an advanced user runs the System File Checker Tool (sfc.exe), the files are unintentionally flagged as corrupted. There is no impact or corruption on a device that is running this update, and this issue will be fixed in a later service update.

OK - thanks for this!
I'm in UK and it's late... I'll look at the other PC with the "won't install KB 3000850 update" issue another day and report what I find.....
