Hello, I'm back again.

I've still been wrestling with my PC. I've run Ssfc/scannow three consecutive times with no luck. I've done the same in safe mode no luck.

My computer system is Windows 7 64 bit SP 1 last updated today.

I'v attached a printout from Speccy for additional info.

However, it produced a cbs.log also attached

These sre some of the errors that have been enumerated.

2019-08-21 13:14:12, Info CBS SQM: Failed to start upload with file pattern: C:\Windows\servicing\sqm\*_std.sqm, flags: 0x2 [HRESULT = 0x80004005 - E_FAIL]
2019-08-21 13:14:12, Info CBS SQM: Failed to start standard sample upload. [HRESULT = 0x80004005 - E_FAIL]
2019-08-21 13:14:12, Info CBS SQM: Queued 0 file(s) for upload with pattern: C:\Windows\servicing\sqm\*_all.sqm, flags: 0x6
2019-08-21 13:14:12, Info CBS SQM: Warning: Failed to upload all unsent reports. [HRESULT = 0x80004005 - E_FAIL]
2019-08-21 13:14:12, Info CBS No startup processing required, TrustedInstaller service was not set as autostart, or else a reboot is still pending.

Further down;

2019-08-21 13:14:13, Info CBS Failed to internally open package. [HRESULT = 0x800f0805 - CBS_E_INVALID_PACKAGE]
2019-08-21 13:14:13, Info CBS Session: 30758979_3667207161 initialized by client WindowsUpdateAgent.
2019-08-21 13:14:13, Info CBS Failed to internally open package. [HRESULT = 0x800f0805 - CBS_E_INVALID_PACKAGE]

Any help appreciated

Is this a continuation of this earlier thread?

Rather than worrying about what logs show (most logs show errors) what specific problem are you having with your computer? I never look in Event viewer and I don't think I've run sfc on any of our four Windows 7 computers - ever.

Of course in 4 months. Windows 7 will be history as far as patching is concerned.

Hi softwaremaniac,

The sfc scan message is Windows resource protection did not find any integrity violations.

I didn't realize that error messages were common in various logs. I feel a little better kmowing my computer isn't on the verge of death.

Hi plodr,

I do believe I have accessed event viewer two or three times from a response regarding a problem in the past.

My problems are two:

1) When trying to access event viewer I recieve a message the MMC could not open the snap-in. I have tried the the event viewer command line method with the same result. An on-line search provided other methods of accessing event viewer. All were met with the same MMC message as noted above.

The MMC seems to work with other computer management snap-ins such as system configuration, device manager, performance monitor etc.

My concern is whether or not the event viewer is corrupted and how can it be fixed. By determining this maybe I can prevent or fix any further problems of this nature.

Also, as part of the scenario I am concerned that maybe the MMC might have a problem that could blow up in the future.

2) Start - Search does not work. When I select the Start orb all the programs appear. If I select a program that program will open normally. However, if I try to use the search function and, for example, type in devmgmt.msc, all the programs "disappear" from the list and the "search" doesn't work.

I am concerned that this problem may somehow be tied into the above scenario and cause future (and bigger) problems down the road.

I don't plan to stop using Windows 7. It does what my wife and I need for it to do.

Thanks

Let's check the HDD:

GSmartControl
Follow the instructions below to check your SMART status with GSmartControl:

  • Download the portable version of GSmartControl and save it on your Desktop;
  • Extract the zip file to your Desktop. Open the folder gsmartcontrol-1.1.3-win64 which should be located on your Desktop and double-click gsmartcontrol.exe to launch the program.
  • Identify your drive in the list (if recognized by the tool), and hover your mouse over it.
  • You should see something called: SMART status. It will either read: Enabled, in which case you should do the following:
  • Double-click on it to bring up its window (usually you'll find your drive by its size or its brand name);
  • Go to the Self-Tests tab, then select Extended Self-test in the Test type drop-down list and click on Execute (this test can take a few hours to complete);
  • Once the test is over, the results will be displayed at the bottom of the window. Please copy and paste these results in your next reply or take a screenshot;
  • Also, go in the Attributes tab and if you have any entries highlighted in red or pink, take a screenshot of the GSmartControl window and attach it in your next reply;
  • Please note: If the SMART Status reads: Unsupported, stop and let me know.

Do the above that softwaremaniac posted first. If your hard drive appears to be okay, then try these two things.
1. For the MMC snap in
How To Fix MMC Could Not Create The Snap-in - Troubleshooter
perhaps just method 1; avoid the registry fix for now.
2. For the search/run issue
a. Right click the orb and select Properties
b. Click the Customize button near the top right
c. Scroll down to the heading Search other files and libraries
Make sure that Search with public folders is selected

Hi softwaremaniac, I ran the GSmartControl.

This is the first page.

The Attributes section had no red or pink entries. However, it showed three other drives with no names etc.

All I have on the PC is the Toshiba Hard Drive and a DVD-RW. Perhaps they are "phantom drives" ?

I will run plodr's solutions next.

Hi plodr,

I tried the method you suggested and unfortunately it did not work.

I went to the registry to explore that area.

The screen grab in the How To Fix MMC .... shows what I believe is the expanded view of the key in question.

The pane on the right side of the screen capture is the expanded view of that key That view shows REG_SZ values and Reg_EXPAND_SZ values. Mine is completly different.

There are only three subkeys (?) a DEFAULT (subkey) ? with no number or other value, a HelpTopicKey with a value of C:Windows\Help\eventvwr.chm, and LinkedHelpTopic Key with the same value name as the HelpTopicKey.

If I right click on the key the EXPAND selection is "greyed" out.

When trying to access event viewer I receive a message the MMC could not open the snap-in.
You never posted the error number so I really don't know what FX key you are looking at.

Your error is "could not open the snap-in". The error on the page I linked to is "could not create the snap-in". So these are not the same error message. That's why I suggested you not do the registry fix.

And here is a slightly different error
https://support.microsoft.com/en-us...-you-may-receive-an-error-when-using-custom-v
It said that one has been fixed in this update from June 2019
https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/4508772/windows-7-update-kb4508772

I'll keep searching to see if I can find could not open snap-in when dealing with event viewer.
And yet a different message could not initialize the snap-in.

You are sure the correct wording is "could not open the snap-in? Since there appears to be so many different errors, I don't want to waste time searching for the incorrect error message.

I had downloaded and installed KB 4508640 on my computer.

I installed KB 4508772 today. No change.

The screen capture below is from How To Fix MMC Could Not Create The Snap-in - Troubleshooter link you referred me to on 9/16/2019.

The key below is the key for the event viewer showing the CLID

In those instructions is a method by which the Registry is modified by removing the key which would be replaced after closing the registry and the restaring the computer.

The expanded right pane illustrates (I assume) the expanded values (?) within that CLSID

Mine looks nothing like the expanded view of the CLID.

I'll try to taake some screen shots of mine an dpost those in my next reply

I need to know exactly what your error says. You did not have to post what was shown in the links I posted.
Is it "could not open" or "could not create" or "could not initialize" or something else?
Also what is the CLSID? Is it b05566ad-fe9c-4363-be05-7a4cbb7cb510?

I can't search for solutions until I know your error. There are a few different errors so I'd be wasting my time posting for an error you don't have.

Hi plodr,

Actually I get two different errors.

If I type eventmgr into the run box (windows flag + R) I receive - MMC could not create the snap in. Capture 3 is the eventmgr error

If I type compmgmt.msc into the run box (windows flag + R) I receive MMC has detected an error in a snap in and will unload it. Capture 4 is the error.

Capture 5 is the message I receive if I select the bottom "button" of the Captur 4 error

Stack trace is the lower portion of message 5.

Yes b05566ad-fe9c-4363-be05-7a4cbb7cb510 is the CLID for the event manager.

As I mentioned Monday, I have two of those identical CLID's in the registry.

Capture 1 is what I receive when I expand one of the b05566ad-fe9c-4363-be05-7a4cbb7cb510 entries. As I noted there are only three keys (?). I expanded each one of the three keys (?) None have REG - Z or other keys (?) within them.

Capure 2 is what I receive when I expand the other CLID b05566ad-fe9c-4363-be05-7a4cbb7cb510 It has 18 (keys) ? I expanded all the keys. None have REG - Z or other keys (?) within them.

I do not see any of the entries that are shown in the example of the expanded CLID (as I posted Monday) which was from that expanded CL ID which is illustrated in the How To Fix MMC Could Not Create The Snap-in - Troubleshooter link you provided me.

I hope this provides a little more clarity.

Hi! Let me try something:

Step#1 - Export SnapIns hive
  • Click on the Start button and in the search box, type regedit
  • When you see regedit on the list, right-click on it and select Run as administrator.
  • When regedit opens, using the left pane, navigate to the following registry key and select it by clicking on it once.

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\MMC\SnapIns
  • Once selected, click File > Export....
  • Change the Save as type: to Registry Hive Files (.).
  • Name this file SnapIns (with no file extension) and save it to your Desktop.
  • Right-click on the saved file and choose Send To -> Compressed (zipped) Folder.
  • Attach the .ZIP file to your next post.
  • If the file is too large to upload here, upload to Dropbox or OneDrive or SendSpace and just provide the link here.

Capture 2 has 21 keys and looks like mine with 21 keys. If you only see the heading Name I suspect you have the column headings Type and Data far to the right. That's why you don't see something like this
columns_in_regedit.JPG

plodr,

Absolutely ! 100% correct.

Two questions:

a) If I export the SnapIns Hive will that remove them permanently ?

b) Is there a way to adjust the column widths so that column headings are not so far to the right ?

Thanks

oldraider67

Hi!

No, this will not remove them, this will copy them, so I can inspect them and make modifications if necessary.

As your your second question, if you look closely, you can see the marks in front of the Type and Data colums on the top, there, you can adjust the size of the columns.
