[SOLVED] Not getting any updates, error 0x800b0100

Hello,
I have a problem with a computer that has stumped me, so I am looking for some help. I am providing part-time computer support to an organization, and I am not there every day so my replies may be delayed. The SFCFix and CBS logs are below.

This computer is not a name brand machine, and I do not know it's complete history. It is presently running Windows 7 Professional 32-bit SP1, and was upgraded from either Vista or XP (I know because there is a windows.old directory). I do not know if SP1 was part of the upgrade or if it was installed separately. I got involved with this computer because there was an internet access problem that turned out to be in the Firewall Router, but while working on that problem I noticed that this computer was complaining about not being able to get updates from Microsoft. Windows Update said that it had never installed any updates, which seemed to be an odd thing because it has been getting the Microsoft Security Essentials updates almost every day. When I would try to check for updates I would see a very short time of attempting to work and then get error 0x800b0100. I tried some Mr. Fixit things, ran sfc /scannow (could not fix everything), but still got the same error. It does have a good internet connection, which I have verified with Ping, Tracert, and the web browsers work fine.

I have made a complete backup of this computer, so if I make the problem worse I can do a restore. I do have at least one other computer close by which is running Windows 7 Pro 32-bit, but it has been getting updates without any problems.

I was thinking about doing a re-install of SP1, but decided to seek some help first.
Any assistance that you can provide will be appreciated.

Hi and welcome to Sysnative. Let's see if we can get you fixed up. Please start with the following.

Step#1 - SFCFix Script
Warning: this fix is specific to the user in this thread. No one else should follow these instructions as it may cause more harm than good. If you are after assistance, please start a thread of your own.

  1. Download SFCFix.exe (by niemiro) and save this to your Desktop. If you still have this on your desktop from downloading previously, you don't need to re-download.
  2. Download the file below, SFCFix.zip, and save this to your Desktop. Ensure that this file is named SFCFix.zip - do not rename it.
  3. Save any open documents and close all open windows.
  4. On your Desktop, you should see two files: SFCFix.exe and SFCFix.zip.
  5. Drag the file SFCFix.zip onto the file SFCFix.exe and release it.
  6. SFCFix will now process the script.
  7. Upon completion, a file should be created on your Desktop: SFCFix.txt.
  8. Copy (Ctrl+C) and Paste (Ctrl+V) the contents of this file into your next post for me to analyse please

Step#2 - System Update Readiness Tool (SUR)
1. Download and run the following file.
2. When it asks you if you wish to install, please answer yes. Note: It could take 15 minutes or more to run. Please don't cancel.
3. You will get an Installation Complete screen when it's done running.
4. Please attach the log from the following location. C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\CheckSUR.log

Now here is how I worked through your instructions and also some additional information. I understand that you use the Desktop as a location for files just to keep it simple, but I don't want to confuse the other users of this computer by having those files on the Desktop so I am using c:\temp\Rick as the location of the files.
The instructions for SFCFIX.zip worked just fine on the first try.
I altered the instructions for the SUR Tool, and ended up wasting some time. I downloaded it, used Microsoft Security Essentials to check it for viruses, and then ran it. It took 50 minutes of it saying that it was "checking for updates on this computer" for my patience to be exhausted and then I canceled it.
I then downloaded the SUR Tool again, but this time specified to Run instead of save, and it finished in less than 10 minutes.
During that long time I decided to verify my belief that there had never been any udpates installed on this computer. There was one listed in Event Viewer back in 2012, but nothing else listed until I started trying to fix this problem. When I ran the systeminfo command there were 96 hotfixes listed as installed. In Event Viewer it seems that my first run of SFCFIX.exe fixed enough that Windows Update started working a couple of days later.

So now when I run Windows update it says that there are 115 important updates available and 7 optional updates.

Should I go ahead and install those updates?

Hi BrianDrab,

I spent a couple of hours going through the cycle of installing updates, reboot, and checking for new updates. The process seemed to work normally, and now I have 222 hotfixes installed.

Thank you for the help. I think that we can mark this issue as being solved. I very much appreciate not having to go a complete re-install on this computer to get the problem solved.
