Nonstop BSODs - New ACer Aspire Laptop

Hi all,

(skip to bottom for the juicy bits)

I bought a new Acer Laptop (Aspire V3-571g) a few months ago, had a few BSODs on it, then one day it failed to recognise my HDD. I took it back, it was sent back to the manufacturer, and then came back with a new HDD. Since then, I've still been getting BSODs. I hadn't used my computer in a week or so, but did today, and the BSODs have become truly unmanagable, crashing within seconds of starting up, or sometimes, even before starting up. For instance, whilst typing this (on another computer) this error came up during start up (before windows even launched)

STOP: c0000221 Unknown Hard Error
\SystenRoot\System32\ntdll.dll

I have had more than 5 BSODs today, with varying messages and codes

Here's hopefully all the info you need.

I'm very tempted to wipe everything and install a clean version of windows and the drivers.

Thanks in advance!

I'm very tempted to wipe everything and install a clean version of windows and the drivers.

That is what I would recommend immediately.

There is something very wrong with your system as >>75% of the files in the zip attachment were blank - filled with spaces. Also, at least 1/2 of the 14 dumps were not able to be processed as they also were mostly blank.

I see likely issues with RAM & HDD in the 7 dumps that were processed; however, other hardware failure like mobo can't be ruled out.

I would demand a new system from Acer. You have suffered enough.

Judging by the history and follow-up comments, I too would rate a mobo defect, possibly in the power supply section, as pretty high up the list.

3rd to agree with this. Often times vendors tend to try to skirt issues with their systems in an effort to save money by replacing components based on cheapest labor and parts, which usually starts with the hard drive. You'll want to request an entire system replacement and assert that you have the right to do so under warranty obligations. Having it turned in just to have them randomly pick a part to replace over and over again is not worth dealing with. Better just to replace the whole system.

Thanks everyone.

I've wiped the HDD and installed a clean version of windows without any of the junk that came with Acer, and only added networking drivers for now and the laptop is working a treat.

I'll add other drivers as the need arises, and unless I get problems in the next couple of days, I think I'll put it down to a driver issue for now? I may be completely wrong and be eating my words soon, in which case I'll be sure to pop back on here!

Thanks for your advice -- I'm very close to demanding a new laptop!

Cheerio

Sounds like a plan!!

Good Luck; we'll of course be here if any problems occur.

And here the problems come!
I experienced few crashes in the last few weeks, but they are beginning to return!
I've attached a summary, but in short, I think it's time to ask Acer for a new one! I assume this involves going back to the place of purchase, but if there are easier ways, let me know!

I never got around to installing the last few drivers, but I doubt this would have much impact.

Thanks again for all your help!

Recommendations:

You do not have Service Pack 1 installed. Most of the drivers released now are designed to work with Windows 7 Service Pack 1. Service Pack 1 can also provide more stability and fix possible corruption on the operating system. I strongly advise you update to Service Pack 1.

Crashes were all Verifier enabled, but point to a hard disk related problem. First, disable Verifier before installing Service Pack 1.
Start Menu -> All Programs -> Accessories -> Right click Command Prompt -> Run as administrator -> Type the following command and then Enter:
Code:
verifier /reset
-> Restart your computer.

It is up to you whether you want to proceed with the following troubleshooting. Since crashes point to a hardware problem, you are perfectly within your rights to ask acer for a replacement.

Update to Service Pack 1 (SP1)

Hard Disk Diagnostics:

Crashes point primarily to a hard drive related problem. This could mean hard disk corruption, bad sectors, a failing hard disk, Windows files or registry corruption, viruses, or memory problems.
  • If you are overclocking any hardware, please stop.

  • Run Disk Check with both boxes checked for all HDDs (you may want to run this overnight since it will take 4-8 hours to finish). Post back your logs for the checks after finding them using Event Viewer. In Event Viewer, expand Windows Logs, click Application to let it load, right click Application and click Find.... Search for chkdsk or wininit to find the logs.
For any drives that do not give the message:
Windows has checked the file system and found no problems
run disk check again as above. In other words, if it says:
Windows has made corrections to the file system
after running the disk check, run the disk check again.
  • Run all Basic tests with SeaTools: S.M.A.R.T. Check, Short Drive Self Test, Drive Information, Short Generic, and Long Generic. Run the tests for all HDDs.
  • Run a system file check to check Windows for corruption:
    1. Click Start Menu
    2. Click All Programs
    3. Click Accessories
    4. Right click Command Prompt
    5. Click Run as administrator
    6. Type
      Code:
      sfc /scannow
      and press Enter
    7. Once it is complete, make note of the message. If it says Windows Resource Protection did not find any integrity violations., restart your computer and post back
    8. If the message does not say Windows Resource Protection did not find any integrity violations., restart your computer and do steps 1-6 again.
    9. You may need to do steps 1-6 up to three times with a restart in between each run to resolve all corrupted files.
    10. If you still have corrupted files after a fourth run, post back here with the following:
      • Click Start Menu
      • Click Computer
      • Open your C: drive
      • Open Windows
      • Open Logs
      • Open CBS
      • Copy and paste CBS.log or CBS (it may not have the log extension) to a location you will remember.
      • Compress (zip) the CBS file and attach the .zip file to your next post.

  • Download and install Malwarebytes, update it, do not start the free trial, and then run a full scan. Also run a full scan with your antivirus software installed on your system. If you do not have antivirus software installed, I recommend:
    • Microsoft Security Essentials coupled with Malwarebytes. Do not start the free trial of Malwarebytes. Just use the standalone version, update it, and scan your computer once a week with Malwarebytes and with Microsoft Security Essentials.
Make sure to update the security software before running the full scan.
  • Run Memtest86+ for at least 7-10 passes. It may take up to 22 passes to find problems. Make sure to run it once after the system has been on for a few hours and is warm, and then also run it again when the system has been off for a few hours and is cold.
Also, in case Memtest86+ misses anything and comes up with no errors, run the extended version of the Windows Memory Diagnostics Tool for at least five passes. You may want to run both Memtest86+ and the Windows Memory Diagnostics Tool overnight since they take a long time to complete (run them an hour before bed each of the next two nights and check before going to sleep that they are still running).

Problem Devices:

Code:
Plug and Play Software Device Enumerator	ROOT\SYSTEM\0000	52
High Definition Audio Device	HDAUDIO\FUNC_01&VEN_10EC&DEV_0269&SUBSYS_10250645&REV_1001\4&39A5A31C&0&0001	52

Make sure all drivers are installed for your system. You are missing drivers for the above devices.

3rd Party Drivers:

The following is for information purposes only. My recommendations were given above. The drivers that follow belong to software or devices that were not developed by Microsoft. Any drivers in red should be updated/replaced/removed. You can find links to the driver information and where to update the drivers in the section after the code box:

Thought I'd give you all an update:

I took it back demanding a new laptop, which they refused to give me up front.
They ran an analysis and thought the issue lay with the RAM.
This was replaced, and two weeks on I haven't had any BSOD.

They have said if I get any now, I'll get a new laptop, but at the moment it doesn't look like I'll need it.

Thanks all for your support -- you've been the most friendly, understanding, and patient forum I've ever met.

Glad we could help, and I am happy to see new RAM has helped to fix the problem.

Thank you for posting back and letting us know the status.

Best wishes all remains stable for you. :-}
