Hello Sysnative Pros,

Would very much appreciate help with correcting this "no update" and missing "Features" problem. I get Error 80080005, (access denied) I've tried all the usual Fixit, MFC scannow, CheckSUR, etc. It seems to be a problem with corrupt permissions for "TrustedInstaller" and missing CBS stores.

Here is the CheckSur.log:

Not sure if the CBS.zip got attached. Nothing seemed to "drag" but I did use "add files" with browse.

I think the CBS.zip is too big to attach. I couldn't select it and it didn't drag in with a check mark. It is well over 8.5 mb compressed. If a selection of it would help, please let me know. I think a smaller selection would attach. Just a guess.

Thank you Brian so much for the reply! Yes, what was actually determined after that thread was closed, was my hard drive was beginning to crash. Personal data recovery was then attempted. I also bought a replacement drive and was able to restore an image backup. This backup image still has the update problem, but seems to have no personal data loss from physical damage. It works well except for the update issues. On another hard drive I also did a factory restore and something like 8 hour of updates. It has no personal data or applications.

I would greatly appreciate your help in fixing my system. Thank you!

Ed

In the Microsoft thread Go The Power asked you to do the following and it was never successfully done. Please do this first.

Click Start -> Inside the search field search for Powershell.exe
Press Enter
Inside the PowerShell windows copy the following command
get-acl "HKLM:\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Component Based Servicing" | fl >2
Press Enter
Type in notepad 2
Press Enter
Please post the contents of the notepad file back into this thread.

Thanks Brian. Here it is:

Thanks. That looks good. No please do the following.

Step#1 - Export CBS Registry Key

  1. Click on the Start
    Start%20Orb.jpg
button and in the search box, type regedit
  2. When you see regedit on the list, right-click on it and select Run as administrator
  3. When regedit opens, using the left pane, navigate to the following registry key and select it by clicking on it once.

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Component Based Servicing

  4. Once selected, click File > Export....
  5. Change the Save as type: to Registry Hive Files (*.*)
  6. Name this file CBS (with no file extension) and save it to your Desktop.

Once done please upload this file via Dropbox or One Drive or SendSpace.

I think I tried an Update install that didn't work. That's the same as a Repair install I believe.

Another thought - I do have another drive that I did a factory install on. Could I export the subkeys from that and import them into the system I'm trying to recover?

Also, there is an HP_RECOVERY (D) Partition. Could that be of any help?

You can't use a hive from a different machine unfortunately. It would put your machine into an unknown state. If you backup all of your data then you can likely use the HP_RECOVERY partition to restore your machine back to when it was new and then just put your data back on. You'll have to re-install all of your programs as well though.

If you would like to take this approach, let me know.

Thanks Brian. Sorry I haven't been more clear. The hive would not be from a different machine. Here's what I did. After the disk crash of my Seagate 1TB drive, I installed a new 2TB internal WD drive. I then installed a clean Factory restore on the drive and brought the updates current. I saved that system image on a 2TB USB portable drive. The USB drive also had a system image of my corrupt system dated 4/30/2015.

Next, I removed the 2TB drive and installed a new 1TB WD internal drive in the same computer and then restored my 4/30/2015 system back to it using my USB portable drive.

At this point, I would like to attempt a hive transfer. I have both system images on my USB portable and DVD backups too.
If it doesn't work, I should have nothing more to lose, and I would then like your help splicing a new system together.

Please let me know what you think.

Thanks,
Ed

OK, so you want to check if the hive exists in the 4/30/2015 backup and then use those? Sure you can try. There's no guarantee that would work. What format is the backup that you have on the USB drive?

I know the hive does not exist on the 4/30/2015 backup. That's the system we've been working on. It would be the target. I'm hoping I can use the hive from the factory restore with updates as the source.

The backups are full system images. I will have to go back to the factory restored system to do a hive export then go to the target system to import it. I have no idea what will result, but it seems worth a try. Would you suggest a export of the entire CBS or do separate subkey exports?

Thx
Ed
