"No updates are installed on this computer" and "sfc.exe /scannow" doesn't work

Hi,

I have the similar issue with the thread below where I can't view my installed updates and can't run sfc.exe /scannow
https://www.sysnative.com/forums/wi...computer-unable-run-sfc-scannow-safemode.html

I've tried doing chkdsk, scanning for malwares and adwares, but still no luck
I want to avoid reinstalling my Windows if possible

Your help is much appreciated!

Hello and welcome! Apologies for the delay! Do you still require assistance?

Re: "No updates are installed on this computer" and "sfc.exe /scannow" doesn't work

Retrieve Components Hive
1. Navigate to C:\Windows\System32\Config and locate the COMPONENTS file.
2. Please copy this file to your desktop.
Note: If you receive an error that this file is in-use, simply reboot your computer and try again.
3. Right-click on this file on your desktop and select Send To...Compressed (zipped) folder. This will create a file named COMPONENTS.ZIP on your desktop.
4. The file will likely be too large to upload here so please upload to a file sharing service and just provide the link here.

Run SFC Scan in Normal mode and when it returns the error, attach CBS.log.

GSmartControl
Follow the instructions below to test your hard drive health with GSmartControl:

  • Download GSmartControl and save it on your Desktop;
  • Execute gsmartcontrol.exe; Let the install complete and launch the programme.
  • Identify your drive in the list, and double-click on it to bring up it's window (usually you'll find your drive by it's size or it's brand name);
  • Go in the Perform Tests tab, then select Extended Self-test in the Test type drop-down list and click on Execute (this test can take a few hours to complete);
  • Once the test is over, the results will be displayed at the bottom of the window. Please copy and paste these results in your next reply;
  • Also, go in the Attributes tab and if you have any entries highlighted in red or pink, take a screenshot of the GSmartControl window and attach it in your next reply;

I've done everything according to those steps.
The test result was that it completed without error.
Also in the attribute tab, there was no entry that is highlighted.

Step#1 - Capture Process Monitor Trace
1. Download and run Process Monitor. Start it and leave it running 60 seconds before the failure.
2. Try running SFC just like you have in the past.
3. Stop Process Monitor as soon as it fails. You can simply do this by clicking the magnifying glass on the toolbar as shown below.

4. Select the File menu...Save... and save the file to your desktop. This is likely the default location. The name (unless changed) will be LogFile.PML. This is fine.
5. Zip up and attach the LogFile.PML file as well as your CBS.log

Please see if you can find the following key in the registry: HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\SideBySide\Winners\amd64_microsoft-windows-ehome-ehtrace_31bf3856ad364e35_none_4c46358cd018277

Yes, it exists.

Please delete the character between the c and 4, so the name is: amd64_microsoft-windows-ehome-ehtrace_31bf3856ad364e35_none_4c46358cd018277

I tried renaming it but it won't let me, an error is displayed when I tried to.

Also, when I click on the key, it displays an error too.
