I purchased an HP laptop last week. It came with Windows S mode by default. I followed the instructions to update to Windows 10 Home with a digital license. Everything went smoothly. Today I decided to open the Mail app and begin transferring into. The app would not load. Nor did ANY other Windows app load. I went to the windows store and there were 25 updates. All failed with 0x80070057.

I ran sfc /snannow and there were errors regarding windows resource protection.

I have a CBS log which I can upload if directed to.

Computer works fine otherwise, but I am concerned if I do a system refresh if I will end up back at Windows S Mode. I don't know how to repair this. My options are the HP recovery which is probably S mode. Windows Reset this PC.

I am hoping that I may be able to fix it without having to reinstall everything. Thanks.

Hello and welcome!

Due to the nature of this error, I would recommend that you start with HDD checking as this very often indicates HDD failure (new tech can still fail).

GSmartControl
Follow the instructions below to test your hard drive health with GSmartControl:

  • Download GSmartControl and save it on your Desktop;
  • Execute gsmartcontrol.exe; Let the install complete and launch the programme.
  • Identify your drive in the list, and double-click on it to bring up it's window (usually you'll find your drive by it's size or it's brand name);
  • Go in the Perform Tests tab, then select Extended Self-test in the Test type drop-down list and click on Execute (this test can take a few hours to complete);
  • Once the test is over, the results will be displayed at the bottom of the window. Please copy and paste these results in your next reply;
  • Also, go in the Attributes tab and if you have any entries highlighted in red or pink, take a screenshot of the GSmartControl window and attach it in your next reply;
