Hi, yesterday I had an issue while trying to restart my device after reconnecting to the internet and the Task Host Window wouldn’t close on its own so I had to click restart anyway.

After I did that and checked reliability history this appeared as an error and I don’t know what it means exactly:

I’ve basically been trying to figure out what’s causing my memory usage not to go down after running full scans with Malwarebytes Premium, and Microsoft Safety Scanner. I encountered this while trying to figure it out.

To elaborate on the memory usage thing. Basically, after I finish running a full scan with Microsoft safety scanner, or Malwarebytes, my memory usage won’t return to the normal amount when the system is idle. Reference, my idle memory usage is around 17% to 20%, but when a full scan is run with these programs, my memory usage will go as high as 40% during the scan which is normal, but after it’s finished, it won’t fall below ~30% and I have no idea if this is normal or not.

Came back to add that windows defender does the same thing for a full scan, it doesn’t fall below 26% memory usage. As far as I can tell its only anti-virus software that does it, though I haven’t done much else so it’s hard to say. Scans complete normally and run fine.

I want to say this has been occurring since April, and may either be related to ASUS armoury crate, or the latest BIOS update for my motherboard, as I updated it around then as it involved security improvements.

After I did that and checked reliability history this appeared as an error and I don’t know what it means exactly:
It just means that a service has crashed. It could be a number of services but the event logs should help to pinpoint what crashed exactly. I wouldn't really worry about it unless it's causing you issues.

I would remove any motherboard utilities like that because they tend to run a number of background services which could be consuming memory. They're pretty useless as well.

Not every process is going to release memory immediately, the Memory Manager will also keep "pages" (regions of memory) mapped if it deems it necessary to do so. This is because memory allocation is a expensive process and the Memory Manager will try and reduce the amount of allocations which have to be made as much as possible.

Thank you for the response!

I was always under the impression that I needed something like armoury crate in order to keep everything working, though the software itself is glitchy it seems. At one point I was getting a CMD prompt once a week, and I discovered it was coming from the ASUS software.

Ive just been concerned, as I assumed my system might’ve been infected since it doesn’t fall below a certain amount no matter how long I wait, even though there’s not been any other issues as far as I can tell.

Most of the OEM tools like ASUS Armoury Crate are just bloatware, some of them are known to actually cause system crashes, especially the Dell Support Assistant.

My usage never falls below 18% and that is with everything closed. Windows Defender and some other AV tools will run background scans so that can always be a contributing factor. Additionally, some of your RAM may be allocated to hardware so that will always bump your usage as well. If you want peace of mind, then you can always open a thread in the Security Arena and someone can check your system for you, if they say its clean, then your machine will definitely be clean. Please make sure you follow the posting instructions there as well: Malware Removal Posting Instructions

Only Security Analysts and Admins/Mods can reply in that forum though so you might have to wait a day or two for a response.
