I am using windows live mail 2012. I upgraded to win 10 from win 7. All new emails after the upgrade show the message " Message could not be displayed" I don't know what to do. When I try to repair windows live I get error 0x800c006

Hi Dave. . .

As I'm sure that you know, Windows Live Mail has not been supported by Microsoft for many years now and its code has literally been left to rot.

The code is very old and may not be compatible with newer systems like Windows 10.

I feel for you because I went through the same thing a few years ago when WLM stopped auto-recognizing my Microsoft email accounts and I had to put in port numbers and other info. WLM was my most favorite email app of all time. I miss it terribly.

As I upgraded to Windows 8, then Windows 8.1, problems with WLM got worse and worse. Then when Windows 10 came out, the problems that WLM had far outweighed its continued usefulness to me.

I looked and looked for a replacement and ended up with Outlook 2016 and Thunderbird.

I was shocked that I like Thunderbird as much as I do as I'm not generally a fan of Mozilla.

So, I use both - Outlook 2016 (soon to upgrade to Outlook 2019) and Thunderbird.

Give Thunderbird a try - it is free - Thunderbird — Download Thunderbird (download starts automatically)

I don't know if you liked WLM because of the way it combined emails by subject, making it very easy to delete all or read all concerning one topic. You can get close to that in Outlook 2016 and 2019. Thunderbird is basically a "line item" email app with no subject grouping - at least I have not attempted to look for grouping options. I like Thunderbird because I can delete emails very easily as the sender and subject are very visible plus the search feature is really good.

Anyway, I'm sorry, but I don't think that there is any help in reviving the now 7 year-old WLM 2012 for use on Windows 10.

If you have used a Microsoft email account, all of your emails are automatically saved by Microsoft, so if you do migrate to Thunderbird and/or Outlook, all of your emails will automatically download and populate your inbox and other folders as soon as you set the email account up.

Also - Thunderbird has a ton of add-ons that really make it a good email app.

Regards. . .

Thank you very much for your note. There were lots of reasons I liked windows live. One of the main reasons was that I knew how to use it---- which is pretty important.
The search capability was very good ( If you google thunderbird search-- it is pretty good as well ), the email window pane was very helpful and the look was what I got used to.
I still have it running very well on two other win 7 machines that I am reluctant to mess with until I find a good email replacement. Thanks for the links-- unfortunately no help.

I did try totally uninstalling windows live 2012 plus deleting a ton of other entries in c: having anything to do with win live. Low and behold all email came in and was readable---- but ------ I could not access contacts and could not send mail. I have not given up yet, but I am close. Do you know where I look for logs?

For logs, look under your user profile in this folder -

C:\Users\username\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows Live Mail

Do you like Thinderbird at all?

Thanks for staying in touch.

I am pleased to report that I am now successfully using windows live mail on 3 machines. One runs win 10,; the otheers are win 7. I was able to get my contacts folder to show and update on the win 10 machine------ just a few minutes ago---- finally. I am both stubborn and patient.

If you want to know what I did, I will answer.

By the way, I asked a friend what he used and he answered Outlook Express---- how about that?

I have not tried Thunderbird a lot---- yet. I intend to install it on one machine and try it.

I plan on buying a new laptop with win 10. I will install a modern version of Office and Outlook and see how that goes.

I will continue to run win 7 on some for a while.

Outlook Express
I don't know off-hand what the difference between Outlook 2019 and Outlook Express is.

The reason that I keep both Outlook and Thunderbird on my system is that all too often, the OST (or PST -??) file in Outlook gets corrupted and it brings Outlook to a screeching halt.

Unlike WLM, which literally had a separate folder for every email on the local system, Outlook uses one gigantic file that hold all emails, contacts, etc... under one roof. If one email has something in it that Outlook does not like/has a problem with it, Outlook will cease to operate.

When that happens, I turn to Thunderbird and use it while fixing Outlook.

I keep both Thunderbird and Outlook updated daily simply by starting them up and allowing them to sync for 30 or so minutes.

Outlook express is before windows live essentials and maybe older than that. My comment had to do with the fact that he is still using it and it works.

I will let you know later about Thunderbird. I like the idea of two email clients as a "just in case one breaks"

Hi Dave,

I am having this same issue. I really love WLM but am getting that "message cannot be displayed" error on all the emails. What did you do to get WLM 2012 to work on Windows 10?

Just as a note, I work with many blind or visually impaired clients, and many really like WLM 2012 for ease of accessibility reasons. I have had zero difficulty installing it under Windows 10 and having it function perfectly (for your typical IMAP or POP access methods - as nothing really has changed about those in quite a while). I archived the installer for Microsoft Windows Essentials 2012 (in a ZIP file) on my Google Drive about 7 days before the software was pulled from Microsoft's own download pages. The only one I've ever installed under Windows 10 is WLM 2012.

I do encourage all my clients to use a supported e-mail client or, preferably, webmail if their service supports it. Thunderbird is definitely a very good one as is Opera Mail (if accessibility with a screen reader is not an issue). I also use IMAP exclusively when setting up anyone for e-mail, whether or not they access their messages from multiple devices. IMAP access allows one to dump one's current computer or current e-mail client, get a new one, and be right back in the saddle exactly where one was in mere minutes. POP, by comparision, is a nightmare. I also trust that ISPs, all of them, have a far more robust backup protocol for what's on their servers than even the most dedicated among us have in our homes or offices, which is a second big plus. Once a message has been downloaded and deleted from a POP server it's your problem, and I've seen people lose archives of years of messages secondary to catastrophic failure sans backup on their own machines.

Just tried WLM 2012 again with a Gmail account. I do have to have the "Less secure apps" toggle for my Google account turned on to allow WLM 2012 access, but it's working fine.

I'd still go to a newer, supported e-mail client if at all possible.

If all of the above is unsuccessful, the interweb says that eM Client works similar to WLM 2012. it's free with 2 accounts, if you have more than 2 email accounts you'll have to purchase it.

I used it at work personally for a few years and liked it. We eventually bought licences for Outlook 2019 so we'd have the same email client across all computers that have email.

I somehow broke Windows Live Mail on a win 7 machine that I upgraded to Win 10.

I uninstalled it using control panel, I then went to C:\users\name of user\appdata\local\microsoft\ and then deleted the directories windows live, windows live mail, and windows live movie maker just to be safe . I then installed windows live essentials Which I had downloaded in December. It was 134,112 kb

I then set it up. It took a while to download my inbox. Let me know if this does or does not get it installed. Make sure Google settings are to allow less secure apps. this is vital

I am going to install thunderbird on another machine and plan to look into Outlook

I use both Outlook 2016 and Thunderbird, depending what task I am doing.

If I am cleaning out emails, I prefer Thunderbird.

If sending several emails, I usually use Outlook.

my server is gmail. I have not used it directly much ( that is accessing it via the web instead of the client ) It is more powerful than I had thought and I am looking into using it more directly.

I find the Gmail web interface to be vastly superior to most email clients, and now that you can actually add third-party e-mail addresses under it (though I have not) I'd be using it that way if it were something I wanted. I prefer my e-mail accounts and inboxes to be entirely separate, as their purposes are entirely different, and I keep logged in to the webmail interface for each using a different browser (or private window for each if using the same browser).

In an effort to clean up my inbox by deleting emails, I used filters and search ( pretty powerful tools and lots of info out there on the web ) and the " do this for all conversations" option in Gmail. I accidentally deleted ( put into the Trash folder ) the entire inbox. I was able to get folders and contents back by using the search tool ( in:trash label:xxxx )and then putting those back in the inbox . It took a while for my windows live mail to load but it eventually did. So I now am using windows live mail and Gmail itself on two desktops running windows 10. After finally getting my inbox down in size (so it will not take forever to load ) I plan to put Thunderbird ( using the version that is a secure app on google ) on a different machine running windows 10.

Take a look at the eM Client email client after version 8 is released, too. The free version only supports 2 email accounts, but for many, that's more than adequate.

Upgrading to windows 10 2004 broke Live Mail for me.
Using this suggestion I fixed it, thank you Dave

A totally blind user I know is very grateful, thank you.
