Networking issues after update.

On 19Mar21 my laptop updated to Windows 10 home 2004 19041.867. I didn't realize it was doing this, just thought it was a normal security/bug update. Since then, I have been having trouble accessing other network resources. My NAS (mounted as a drive) I can connect to but if I try to create a file, a text file for instance, it doesn't show up in the folder until I back out and then come back into the file. I can't access other computer shares on the network. I am also having trouble trying to connect to my phone via Bluetooth to transfer files. Running the troubleshooter only says that no problem can be found. The Bluetooth troubleshooter turns the Bluetooth on, even though I can see that it is on, and still it doesn't connect. I have tried forgetting the device and the pairing it again. Sometimes it will connect, most often not. Also, occasionally I can get to a network share on another computer but that is infrequently. I thought I would see if I could get pointed in a direction to check here. I am at the point that I am going to restore to the previous state, though if there is something I can do to correct it that would seem better. Thanks.

1. Tell Windows to not update drivers. Doing it yourself is much better.
Hit start, type change device installation, click it when it pops up. Choose no (ignore the warning in parenthesis - it's false) Click save changes.

2. Find your network drivers from the manufacturer of the network device and install those and reboot.

Thanks xrobwx71. I can't find any newer drivers for the adapter than I already have. The more I play with this computer the more I feel there is some other issue with it. For one thing, just using the file explorer exhibits similar issues. That is, creating a folder or a file in a folder does not update. Hitting refresh will work to show the file created, even show that it is looking for an input for the file name. Explorer hangs up. You can see the error messages I am getting when I try to open it. I thought the Bluetooth issue was fixed when I found a dialog box with "computer discovery" unchecked (even though the settings menu had that item turned on). I checked the box, tried it and it worked. Then it didn't any more. It is past the time allotted to roll this back to the previous iteration. Apparently, MS is more concerned with their time line than the fact that people have other issues to deal with like their health, welfare, and (Sorry, I know that is a rant, but what can one expect?) Not sure where to go from here. I have tried sfc /scannow and DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image/Restorehealth before but I will try that again. I'm not feeling too lucky regarding that avenue of investigation. I did receive an error message regarding one of the mapped drives I tried accessing saying that the name is already in use. Trying to delete the drive hangs in explorer.

Make sure and run the DISM/Online/Cleanup-Image/RestoreHealth first.

Then run the sfc /scannow second.

Make sure to be in an elevated command prompt. Click start, type cmd, hit Ctrl+Shift+Enter.

Let us know.

The first image, explorer error.jpg shows the default program is not set for Internet Explorer. The second I'm not yet sure about but some service could be turned off. it could be MS is trying to force you to use Edge browser. If you click start, type edge, what happens?

Hi xrobwx71
I ran the sfc and the dism (as administrator) out of order that you suggested. No issues found. I restarted (not shut down and power back up), and reran those in the order you mentioned. No issues reported. I ended up disconnecting all the mapped drives in question and remapping them. This was prone with issues itself. The disconnect dialog box would hang. I would have to close it, then reopening explorer would hang. I ended up restarting it through the task manager. The drive I was trying to disconnect would still be present. I would try it again. That disconnect dialog box seemed to work at that point. I would then restart explorer and the drive would no longer be present. I then remapped it. That seemed to work, I would restart explorer again and it would be present. I could then navigate in that mapped drive. I ended up doing this to all of the ones that were giving me problems. I managed to get access to all of them last night. Today I tried it again and I am back to the same situation. My Bluetooth is also a hit and miss situation. I have to keep un-pairing and re-pairing the phone to the computer with mixed results.

Regarding Edge, Windows Key+S needed to bring up a search field here. Typing Edge just displays the Edge browser result that you can select. I commonly see their ribbing to make it a default browser, which I won't.

Not sure where to go from here. I know I can remap the drives when I need to get to them if necessary, but that is a pain. I have been going around the issue using TightVNC to access those computers through a computer that has access to those resources. Another pain.

My NAS unit seems to be working from explorer now. Now being the operative word. I can create a txt file, name it, open it, and delete it without having to refresh or back out and in again.

So this is where I am at. 12 hours yesterday. I don't want to put in another 12. I do have other things to do. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks.

I understand. Be glad you have 12 hours to spend. I do not. I rarely have 20 minutes extra between work and a very active 9-year-old (travel softball, karate)

Do you have a backup plan in place?

Thanks xrobwx71. I put that on my list for investigation. I found some other information regarding registry edits. I haven't had the time to get into it. I do have work around but it is a bit clumsy.

System Restore is ok but a backup image is the best

I'll actually disagree with this, but because of the first part. System Restore cannot ever be relied upon. When it works it's great, but it very often doesn't in my experience.

Your insurance policy against System Restore not working, as well as myriad other potential catastrophies, is taking regular, cyclic full system image backups. It's also a very good idea to take separate user data backups routinely, too.
