My Win Vista 32bit box searching for updates takes never finished

Dear All,

The symptom is as the title says:
My Windows Vista 32bit laptop never finished checking for updates with close to 100% core utilization and no disk or network activity. I left it for DAYS NOT HOURS!
The laptop is otherwise running fine except IE9 which couldn't display ANY page - solved with an IE settings reset.
(Probably was caused by McAfee's bundled security solution which was uninstalled just in case.)

Symptom History:
Because of heavy infestation and various corruptions I performed recently a factory restore to this Toshiba laptop and got it back to the state it was shipped: Vista 32bit with SP1 and latest update installed at 2009/06/16.

Started Automatic Updates which were functioning normaly installing more than 100 updates - until SP2 was installed. After that I got the symptom.

Re-imaged again, this time I installed SP2 and IE9 first: No results.

Than I manually updated the WU Agent to the latest version: v7.6.7600.256: No results.

I ran MS's SURtool: No results.

I did SFC /ScanNow: No results (It reported that some corruptions were fixed but not all.
<rant>It seems MS makes tools that always fixes problems except those that really make a difference</rant>).

I ran SFCFix tool which reported no errors (log file bellow):

The two entries that caught my attention are:

...but MS's solution is to run SFC/ScanNow which I already did.

I want to avoid just installing the latest win32k.sys update, as I am not sure if this will postpone the problem instead of solving it.

Is the SFC problem the ROOT cause and if yes how can it be fixed?
If it is not, what is?

Thank you for the quick response.
These instructions tell a Vista user to do two things:
1) Install the latest update client (I did that already)
2) Install the latest kernel update.
But will this CURE the problem or just POSTPONE it by allowing me to install all updates for now, until next month where it's going to stall again requiring another kernel update and so on...
I am asking because I came across many web posts implying exactly that.
 
Update: GHOSTed my OS disk from another box that had Vista updated until August 2016 - so that at least I am more "updated" instead of being "stuck" to 2009!

As per your suggestions, I then tried to manually install updates from the : http://wu.krelay.de site but ALL fail to install!

What should I do?
