My PC randomly restarts when I'm playing games

I have had my computer for over a year now. It started crashing within a few months of getting it. I did a reinstall of the graphics drivers by using driver sweeper first. This got rid of the problem but a few months later it started happening again. I updated the BIOS after this and again, it solved the problem. Recently however, it has started again and I can't find anything that will fix it. Crashes generally happen when playing games like SC2 and ArmA 2 and a BSOD screen isn't given on reboot - I have auto reboot unchecked. When crashing, it just restarts, sometimes with a buzzing noise coming through my headphones.

I monitored my temps and found that the highest gpu temp was 75 and the cpu was 62. When it did crash the temps were not at 75 or 62 and the 12V rail was still providing 12V. I managed to play ArmA 2 for 3hrs then SC2 for 2hrs perfectly fine until it did another random restart.

The minidump file says it was caused by driver: ntoskrnl.exe, with a bugcheck name of WHEA_UNCORRECTABLE_ERROR and the error code is 0x124.

You have a 0x124 hardware bugcheck. If the system is still under warranty, I would recommend sending it in to have diagnostic tests done and any bad hardware replaced.

Before you proceed with the following, answer these two questions: Are you still under warranty? Does your warranty allow you to open up the machine to check hardware? For your hardware stop 0x124 crash, use the following hardware checks.

  • If you are overclocking any hardware, please stop.

  • Run FurMark to test the display card for artifacts and temperature issues.


  • Run Display card memory tests to check the display card for memory problems.


  • Run Disk Check with both boxes checked for all HDDs and with Automatically fix file system errors checked for all SSDs. Post back your logs for the checks after finding them using Event Viewer. In Event Viewer, expand Windows Logs, click Application to let it load, right click Application and click Find.... Search for chkdsk or wininit to find the logs.
    For any drives that do not give the message that no problems were found, run the disk check again. You do not want the message shown in red below. You do want the message shown in blue below.

    Some helpful links:



  • Run all Basic tests with SeaTools: S.M.A.R.T. Check, Short Drive Self Test, Drive Information, Short Generic, and Long Generic. Run the tests for all HDDs.


  • If you have an SSD, make sure the following are up to date:
    • SSD firmware
    • BIOS Version
    • Chipset Drivers
    • Hard disk controller drivers/SATA drivers
    • If you have a Marvell IDE ATA/ATAPI device, make sure the drivers are up to date from the Intel site or Marvell site and not from your motherboard/vendor support site.


    Run Memtest86+ for at least 7-10 passes. It may take up to 22 passes to find problems. Make sure to run it once after the system has been on for a few hours and is warm, and then also run it again when the system has been off for a few hours and is cold.


  • Run Prime95 to test your CPU, RAM modules, and general hardware.

Software Concerns:

Norton has been known to cause blue screens on some systems. While it does not appear to be the cause for yours, at some point, you may want to remove it to test. Ok, I will get started on these tests. One question though, I clicked the 'Load Setup Defaults' option in the BIOS screen yesterday as other forums suggested this. Since then my computer has not crashed, could this be the fix I needed? However, it's too early to tell whether or not the problem is gone so I will carry out the tests anyway.

Sorry for not responding recently, I have been on holiday the past month.

I completed most of the tests and got the following results:

-All SeaTools Tests = Passed
-FurMark = No crashes
-Prime95 = No issues were raised by the program
-Memtest86+ = Ran for 7 turns and passed - Also note, i have tested my PC with each stick of RAM separately but the crashes still occured.
-No issues were found with my HDD

I have noticed the crashes all look/sound slightly different, sometimes the screen will freeze with a loud buzzing noise coming through my headphones/speakers and other times it will appear as if the computer just randomly decided to reboot.

writhziden is quite busy at the moment, so I will just chime in from where things were left off. Great job with all of the tests you have run. All of your dumps attached are of the WHEA_UNCORRECTABLE_ERROR (124) bugcheck, so we are definitely dealing with hardware.

More specifically, we are dealing with much consistency as well in regards to the WHEA ERROR RECORD structures throughout the dumps. For example, running an !errrec on the WER structures, we get the following error in each dump:

This can mean a few things in regards to hardware, luckily you have already done most of the work. Regardless, here are the possibilities anyway:

This could mean that the 4th DIMM slot itself on your board is faulty, OR the stick of RAM in the 4th DIMM slot is faulty. You mentioned you ran a Memtest for 7 passes, which is good, but this is worrying me a bit -

When do the crashes usually occur? Does it happen during load or video intensive applications? Games, watching movies / videos, etc.... or just browsing, sitting idle, etc.

With regards to the memory, the computer was crashing before I added the Corsair RAM but I will remove any sticks from the 4th slot anyway. I ran the Prime95 tests for around 30 minutes - it got up to test 10 on each 4 workers with no failures.
My computer was crashing about 9 months ago and I was advised to download the BIOS which stopped the crashes occuring. In the past 4 months or so, my computer began crashing again, so I once more decided to update the BIOS drivers but this time it did nothing. Here is the website that I downloaded the drivers (BIOS Version 1503 - 2012/12/04) from - ASUS - Motherboards- M5A78L-M/USB3.
The crashes only occur when I am gaming whether it be Dota 2, Starcraft 2 or GTA IV. Also, only after at least an hour of playing will a crash occur but I can play all day sometimes with no problems. When browsing/idle my system performs normally.

I am going to recommend letting it run for several hours as opposed to minutes. If you can, let it run up to at least 8 hours.

I ran Prime95 for 3 hours until I decided to stop it because my CPU temperatures were going well above the max temp of 62 as stated by AMD - I still didn't get any errors within this time. I also applied new thermal paste the other day as I haven't done it in 2 years or so and I have been able to play games non-stop without any issues until today when it crashed again. The screen froze, a loud buzzing noise came through my headphones for 2 seconds then stopped and the in-game music resumed with the screen still frozen. After a few seconds the music stopped, the buzzing commenced and it rebooted. It is such a frustrating error :banghead:

Hi,

Do you have any dumps by any chance that we have not seen yet? Given the hardware diagnostics you have run, and said that they have passed, at this point I am inclined to believe that since you mentioned you only crash / freeze during load or gaming, that your Power Supply is faulty.

I'll try and see if there are some other dumps but regarding the power supply, I installed a new one (Corsair 600W) just before I started this thread.

All of the attached DMP files are of the WHEA_UNCORRECTABLE_ERROR (124) bugcheck. As I said above in my post #9, they are very consistent and are all of the 'BUSLG_GENERIC_ERR_*_TIMEOUT_ERR (Proc 0 Bank 4)' error.

Now that we have access to more 0x124's, we can see hardware / module image names. This means that this wasn't caused by software a driver itself, but a hardware IRQ or the CPU itself.

What we can say from this is now is this is 100% hardware.

Due to Memtest coming back clean, etc, I am at this point thinking your CPU itself is ultimately the culprit. I would recommend contacting AMD and seeing if an RMA is possible.

Before doing that though, by any chance have you tried clearing the CMOS to ensure your BIOS is at default settings just to be sure we have no issues within the BIOS in regards to perhaps a memory setting, etc?

I have clicked the 'Load Setup Defaults' in the BIOS, so I think that that area is covered.

Regarding the RMA, I purchased my whole computer (pre-built) from PCSpecialist.com at the end of October 2011 and it had a 1 year warranty which is now expired. I received a certificate of authentication from AMD in the package which said in order for a return, I would need the serial number from the box the processor originally came in... a box I didn't receive. Even if I was to get an RMA sorted out, wouldn't that require me to send my current CPU away therefore leaving me without a computer for a while? I am also considering buying a new CPU altogether but I wouldn't want to spend a good chunk of money just to find out that the CPU wasn't the problem.
