Are you familiar with muscle memory? I find that after working on a Win 8 PC/Tablet, then going to a Win 7 computer confuses my own muscle memory. For instance, on a Win 7 PC, I use the Start menu often. Then, when I move to a Win 8 PC, I find I am constantly going to the bottom left corner to look for the Start button. Then I recall which version of Windows I am on! :banghead:
How about you? Does your muscle memory get confused like this?

I actually had a huge battle with my muscle memory a few years ago when I was transitioning from using the Caps Lock key to capitalize my letters as opposed to the Shift key. It was a very bad thing to get caught up in, because it took me quite a large struggle with my muscle memory and learning overall to completely transition from Caps Lock capitalization to Shift key capitalization. On a good day with solid rest when I am well focused I can type 120 WPM now that I am using Shift!

However, when I was using Caps Lock to go ahead and capitalize, since I had to tap it on & off, even though I did it quickly, it would cause lots of cramps. Bad.

Yes... I do find myself momentarily confused at times when working on Windows 8.1

I have the same issue that you mentioned with the Start Search box - which I got used to on Vista & Windows 7.

In Windows 8.1, I execute EXE, MSC & CPL commands from a CMD screen, which I initially bring up in W8.1 via WIN+X keys. It's easier for me to use the various commands v. going through Control Panel.

I always use the Shift key, its so much quicker than using Caps Lock constantly.
