Hello,

I have several issues with my Windows 7 Pro SP1 64-bit machine where Windows Update either freezes or has simply failed to download multiple 'important' security updates since May 2017.

These are all the updates that failed to download and their respective error codes:

KB3172605 – Error 8024000B
KB3175024 – Error 8024000B
KB3164025 – Error 8024000B
KB3161958 – Error 8024000B
KB3159398 – Error 8024000B
KB3168965 – Error 8024000B
KB3170735 – Error 8024000B
KB3175024 – Error 800F0902
KB3170735 – Error 800F0902
KB4074598 – Error 80242016
KB4093118 – Error 80242016
KB4099633 – Error 80073701
KB4284826 – Error 80073701 and 800736B3

Without all these updates, I cannot download other software and am having problems using my computer normally and effectively.

I tried a few solutions available online and got the following results:
– A clean reboot which has now made my computer worse as it takes over 30mins to just shut down my computer.
– Ran Hotfix for Windows (KB947821). C ould not even download/install and got Error 800706BE.
– Ran Windows Update Troubleshooter and got Error 0x80070005.

Finally, I am not sure if this is related but I did a backup of my harddrive last night and discovered my Regedit is corrupt.

Could someone please help me sort out both my Windows Updates and Regeit issues, with the Updates being the priority? Any help or advice would be most appreciated. Thanks.

Hello again.

Sincere apologies, I have just seen that I had to run scans BEFORE posting, so sorry for wasting everone's time.

SFC Scan run first time (before I looked for any solutions online and even found this website) showed no integrity violations. However, ran same thing just now and is saying "Another servicing or repair operation is currently running. Wait for this to finish and run sfc again."
But I don't know where to go to stop whatever other program is running it.

Now running Scanfix at present whose results so far are:
-- Scan of Win update registry
>>Failed to create zip file with erro 2 (repeated 4 times)
>> Scan completed with warnings

Other checks ongoing and I will update with log file as soon as I have full results.

Hi Zarra :welcome: to Sysnative.

Try to do this and post the requested information.

System Update Readiness Tool (SUR)

  • Download the System Update Readiness Tool (x64) and save it to some place, its a big download and eventually we need to run it several times, please keep the file
  • Run the tool. Its like an Update but it can take a long time to do the work. You will get an Installation Complete screen when it's done running
  • Only when SUR finish its work execute the next step

Export the CBS folder

  1. Click the Start button
    Win7Orb.gif
    then click Computer.
  2. Double-click on the C: drive, under the Hard Disk Drives category, and then scroll down to, and double click on the Windows folder.
  3. Find and double click on the Logs folder.
  4. Right-click on the CBS folder, and select Copy.
  5. Go back to your Desktop, right-click on it, and select Paste. You should now see a copy of the CBS folder appear on your Desktop called CBS.
  6. Right-click on this new folder, and navigate through Send to, and select Compressed (zipped) folder.
  7. A new file, also called CBS (CBS.zip), but this time with a different icon, will be created.
  8. Attach this to your next post please, if the file is too big please upload the file to a service like Dropbox, Google Drive, OneDrive or upload to SendSpace and just provide the link for the file here.

Hello SleepyDude!

I am currently running SFCFix (which is currently stuck checking CheckSUR.log), so I just wanted to make sure that you want me to Stop SFCFix immediately and start the SUR test, right?

I realized that the SUR tool looked familiar when I went to download the exe file. This is supposedly also known as 'Hotfix for Windows' based on same file number (KB947821).

Anyway, I ran this yesterday evening and got Error 800706BE. CBS folder can be found here.

SFCFix was still stuck at Checksur.log so I closed that program.

What next?

Hi,

This doesn't look good...

Search with Farbar Recovery Scan Tool (FRST)
  • Download FRST or FRST x64 and save it to the Desktop.
(Please pick the version that matches your operating system's bit type. If you don't know which version matches your system, try FRST if it say that is not compatible with your OS you have to use FRST64
  • Execute FRST/FRST64 right click on the icon
    FRST.gif
and choose Run as Administrator. Make sure all other windows are closed.
    FRST_Search.png
  • On the Search box Copy & Paste the following text:
    Components*
  • Press the Search Files button.
  • Wait for the search to finish FRST will produce a log called (Search.txt) in the same directory the Tool is run from.
  • Please copy and paste the log to your post.

Hope it is not a disaster.

I've attached the Farbar Search results.

Hi,

I don't see any other backup copies of the components store. I suppose you don't have a backup of the system before the problem began?

I'm not sure this is repairable...

Run the SUR tool again copy the new log C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\CheckSUR.log to the Desktop zip it and share the zip file like you did before.

Good evening SleepyDude.

I don't know if you are still checking messages at this hour but here is the link to the CheckSur.log file. Let me know if you want the whole CBS folder to check anything else.

I hope the results are somewhat better and there is some hope to repair my system.

As for backup of components store, I unfortuantely don't have anything of the kind and would not even know where to look. Sorry!

Thanks again for your help.

Hi,

Repeat the process, run SUR and post the new log. It seems better lets see if the tool can fix more problems...

Good morning.

I will certain run it again but just wanted to let you know that my computer did some 'important' Intel update and then I ran the Windows Update again and (get this) I successfully installed the May and June Security updates (KB4099633 and KB4284826).

Woohoo!!! :dance::dance::dance::dance::dance:

Obviously, no idea whether my computer or Regedit is fully fixed or not.

Hi,

Thanks for the update, that is good news. Repeat the process so we can check if something still need fixing.

Here is the latest Checksur.log file.

Also, do you know how I can check whether my Regedit is fixed or if still corrupt?
Thanks.

Hi,

Good its down to six errors on the SUR log, I will work on a fix for this and post latter.

The SUR tool check for errors on the Windows Registry but only in some parts related with Windows Updates, I don't know any tool that can guarantee there is no errors on the Registry. Some software vendors say they can but that isn't true, please don't use any registry optimizer or fixer.

The Registry is like a Database, the system will make sure the database is not corrupted and the data stored can be read and write but because any program can use the registry to store information there is no way to confirm if the data stored/needed by some program is valid or not, only the program authors can check that...

More about this can be found for example on this link: Registry Junk: A Windows Fact of Life – Mark's Blog

To rebuild the missing registry keys I need a copy of the Windows Components store.

Retrieve the Components Hive
  1. Navigate to C:\Windows\System32\Config and locate the COMPONENTS file
  2. Please copy the COMPONENTS file to your desktop
Note: If you receive an error that this file is in-use, simply reboot your computer and try again
  3. Right-click on this file on your Desktop and select Send To...Compressed (zipped) folder. This will create a file named COMPONENTS.ZIP on your Desktop
  4. If file will is too large to upload to the forum please share the file using a service like Dropbox, OneDrive, Google Drive, or upload to www.sendspace.com and just provide the link for the file here

Thank you very muc for the clarification on the Windows Registry and for advice on not messing with it. Much appreciated!

Components hive located here.

Due to the big number of corruptions detected is recommended to run some tools to make sure there are no problems with the computer memory and with the Hard Disk drive.

Do you know if the machine have an SSD or HDD and its brand?

To test the memory you can use the tool included on Windows 7 by following the Option 1 from this guide:
How to Test Your Computer’s RAM for Problems

Hi,

Win Memory Diagnostic ran fine and detected no errors. I had 2 sets of similar diagnostic results but my System info claims that my hard drive disk is divided into 3 partions.

As for type of hard drive, I believe I have a Solid State 'Standard disk drive,' model LITEON LCH-512V2S SCSI Disk Device (Fixed hard disk). I hope this is the info you are looking for.

What else do I need to do?

Hey,
So sorry for the delayed reply.

My computer passed the test but am not sure the results will be helpful (screenshot attached). Are there any other tests I need to run?

Also, you said you would work on fix for the SUR log and post later. Might you have this for me please?

Thanks.
