I'll keep this as short as possible. I seem to have multiple windows errors that cause my computer to hard freeze in certain situations. These situations include playing videos (Firefox seems to be the only browser where videos won't hard freeze my computer for some reason, but on rare occasion still find one that does), certain webpages (very few, but this seems to happen much more often if I'm not using Firefox), and trying to run a Windows Experience Index Assessment. Running check disk finds no issues, and scan disk stops at 10% verification but tells me that there are some corrupted files it can't fix.

I discovered your program and ran it. Here are the results:

Hello and welcome,

Attach the file C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\CheckSUR.log to your next reply.

Something went wrong. The log file isn't complete. Please attach the same file again.
When available attach the file C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\CheckSUR.persist.log also.

Great.
Some remnants of previous Avast versions are still there. Please do following.

Provide the Components Hive
1. Navigate to C:\Windows\System32\Config and locate the COMPONENTS file.
2. Please copy this file to your desktop.
Note: If you receive an error that this file is in-use, simply reboot your computer and try again. Note: If you find that you need to reboot and are unable to because this is a server then try Option#2 below.
3. Right-click on this file on your desktop and select Send To...Compressed (zipped) folder. This will create a file named COMPONENTS.ZIP on your desktop.
4. The file will likely be too large to upload here so please upload to Gofile or WeTransfer and just provide the link here.

Option#2 (only if you are unable to follow the previous instructions)

  • Please download the Freeware RegBak from here: Acelogix Software - Download products
You will find it at the bottom of the page that the link brings you to.
  • Go ahead and install this program and accept all the defaults. After the last install screen the program should open.
  • Click the New Backup button. Accept the defaults and simply click Start.
  • When it says Finished successfully, click the Close button.
  • This will bring you back to the main screen of the program. You will see one entry in this list with the date that you did it. Right-click on this line-item and select Explore Backup...
  • This will bring you into the folder where the backup was made. You should see a Users folder and a Windows folder along with a couple other files. Double-click on the Windows folder to open it. Then open the System32 folder and then config folder. You should see around 6 files in here, one of which is named COMPONENTS.
  • Copy the COMPONENTS file to your Desktop. If the COMPONENTS file does not exist, please fetch it instead from C:\Windows\System32\config\COMPONENTS.
  • Now right-click on the COMPONENTS file that is on your desktop and select Send to > Compressed (zipped) folder.
  • Then please upload the zip file (COMPONENTS.zip) to your favourite file sharing website (it will be too big to upload here). Examples of services to upload to are Gofile or One Drive or WeTransfer and then just provide the link in your reply.
  • You can close any open windows you have as well as the RegBak program now.

  1. Download the Farbar Recovery Scan Tool and save it to your Desktop:
64-bit: Downloading Farbar Recovery Scan Tool
Note: Your antivirus program may report FRST incorrectly as an infection. If so, disable the real-time protection when downloading and running FRST.
  2. Download the attachment fixlist.txt and save it to your desktop.
  3. Right-click on FRST64.exe and select "Run as administrator".
  4. Press the Fix button.
  5. The tool will now process fixlist.txt.
  6. If for some reason the tool needs a restart, please make sure you let the system restart normally. After that let the tool complete its run.
  7. When finished, a log called Fixlog.txt will appear in the same directory the tool is run from.
  8. Attach the logfile Fixlog.txt to your next reply.

Step 2:
Follow the instructions below to run a scan with the System Update Readiness Tool (SURT) and provide a log.
  1. Download SURT for your system. (Windows 7 SP1 x64)
  2. Once downloaded, execute the installer, and go through the installation (this process can take around 15-20 minutes).
  3. On completion, a log will be created in C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\CheckSUR.log.
  4. Attach this log to your next reply.
Alternatively, if these instructions are unclear for you, you can follow the tutorial below.

Bad news, I'm not getting a fixlist.txt file. Even though Avast didn't interfere, I tried disabling it but to no avail. I thought about just continuing on to step 2, but I figured it was best to wait for your response. You might want my to do other things first considering the issue. I saw a post after a google search where a guy had the same issue and was told his computer was "highly infected". I sure hope that's not the case for me.

Here's what I did get:

Correct. I provided the file fixlist.txt as attachment. You should download it and use it with FRST64 as mentioned in my previous post. FRST64 will then produce a file called Fixlog.txt.
Did you download it ?
In the meantime I will look at the 2 log files FRST.txt and Addition.txt.

Don't worry. If anything is unclear just ask.
Well done. The log CheckSUR.log looks much better now.

Step 1:
Start the System Update Readiness Tool (SURT) again.
On completion, attach the logfile C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\CheckSUR.log to your next reply.

Step 2:
Uninstall following programs, You have also MalwareBytes installed so these might be a bit overdone. You may re-install them when we have finished this thread.
- Spybot - Search & Destroy
- SUPERAntiSpyware

Your instructions are crystal clear and couldn't possibly be any better. Like I said, I've just been cursed with occasionally missing very obvious things. I'm actually very impressed by how good you are at this. Almost anyone could follow your directions, even those with only very basic computer knowledge.

I uninstalled those programs and restarted before running the SURT tool again. I hope that's okay. I don't know why it wouldn't be. I'm not sure what the reason is for running SURT a second time, and after I did a window popped up saying it was unable to install the hotfix. Not sure if it did anything new, but here's the log:

Thank you for the kind words.
The reason to run SURT again is to see if its log is clean or if there other issues left.

The registry is missing some data.

Download the attachment and extract it.
Open the extracted folder, double-click the file FDResPub.reg.
When prompted allow to change the registry settings.
Report the result.

Step 2:
Perform a new scan with FRST.
  1. Right-click FRST64.exe to run the tool as administrator.
  2. Note: Ensure that the Addition.txt check box is checked at the bottom of the form within the Optional Scan area.
  3. Press the Scan button.
  4. Please wait for the tool to finish. It will produce two logfiles called FRST.txt and Addition.txt in the same directory the tool is run from (which should be the desktop)
  5. Post the logfiles FRST.txt and Addition.txt as attachment in your next reply.

WARNING! The following fix is specific to the user's system in this thread only. No one else should follow these instructions, as it could damage your system.
  • Download the attachment SFCFix.zip and save it on your desktop.
  • Save any work you have open, and close all programs.
  • Drag the SFCFix.zip file over the SFCFix.exe executable and release it.
    1p8eDnI.gif
  • SFCFix will launch, let it complete.
  • Once done, a file will appear on your desktop, called SFCFix.txt.
  • Open the file, then copy and paste its content in your next reply.
