Hi there! My PC currently can't complete the "sfc /scannow" function in Windows 8.1 command prompt. At first, I wanted to try to create a restore point to backup my C: drive system settings in Windows System Protection. But it was failed and the system showed this message: "The restore point could not be created for the following reason: The specified object was not found. (0x80042308)". I tried various methods to fix this problem, including restarting the "Volume Shadow Copy" services in "service.msc", but it didn't work. After that, I found a solution in one website saying that it happened because of registry errors, so I need to run "chkdsk /r" and also "sfc /scannow" right after that. First, I inputted "chkdsk /r" on my command prompt, then I left the process overnight. On the following day, I tried the "sfc /scannow" and I just found this problem recently when I was running the "sfc /scannow" multiple times as the progress itself always stops at 51%. Please assist me how to fix this, thank you before. :)

Best regards,

moosua

The system restore error is the initial problem that I hoped that could be solved by "chkdsk /r" and "sfc /scannow". What should I do in this case?

GSmartControl
Follow the instructions below to test your hard drive health with GSmartControl:

  • Download GSmartControl and save it on your Desktop;
  • Execute gsmartcontrol.exe; Let the install complete and launch the programme.
  • Identify your drive in the list, and double-click on it to bring up it's window (usually you'll find your drive by it's size or it's brand name);
  • Go in the Perform Tests tab, then select Extended Self-test in the Test type drop-down list and click on Execute (this test can take a few hours to complete);
  • Once the test is over, the results will be displayed at the bottom of the window. Please copy and paste these results in your next reply;
  • Also, go in the Attributes tab and if you have any entries highlighted in red or pink, take a screenshot of the GSmartControl window and attach it in your next reply;
