Hi

I recently upgraded from IE8 to IE11. Since then, windows update tries to install the MS16-001 security update for IE11 (KB3124275). At first, it would just fail, now, trying to install this update results in a bluescreen. (the last windows update day was successful except for this one)

I already tried the following:
  • SFCFix -> does not find any problems (but it keeps failing to check for updates, is that normal? I downloaded the latest version, though)
  • CHKDSK -> no problems found
  • SystemUpdateReadinessTool -> no problems found
  • sfc/scannow -> no problems found

I have no idea what else to test :( Any help is greatly appreciated!

Thank you very much and best regards
Pesche

Hi spitfire :)

I suggest that you create a new thread in the BSOD, Crashes, Kernel Debugging for your BSOD issue. The BSOD Kernel Dump Experts there will be able to tell you what exactly is causing the BSOD. Once this has been solved, if the update still refuses to install (without producing a BSOD of course), then you can return here so we can address that issue :)

When you start a new thread in the BSOD, Crashes, Kernel Debugging section, you need to follow the instructions in the preparation guide below and provide all the logs asked.

https://www.sysnative.com/forums/bs...ng-instructions-windows-10-8-1-8-7-vista.html

Thank you :)

No problem :) I'll be sure to check out your other thread, and if the issue gets solved there, I'll mark this one as such as well :)

Ok, I'm back :) No bluescreens have occurred anymore, so far, but the update still won't install (Error Code 80070643).

Thanks very much for any suggestions, but first have a great weekend!

Ok thx :) I have uploaded the two files. As CBS.log is huge, I have truncated everything before the last attempt to install the update - I hope that's ok (I still have the full log should you need it).

P.S.

The attachment is a 7z-file - you'll need to replace the extension .zip with .7z. A real zip file would have been to large to upload.

The update cannot be installed since it cannot access a file (STATUS_ACCESS_DENIED). Follow the instructions below please.

  • Click on the Unselect All button at the bottom, then check the following items:
    • Reset File Permissions - Make sure that the C: drive is checked underneath;
  • Once done, click on the Start Repairs button and let the scan execute;
  • If you are being prompted with a Security Warning, allow it to go through;
  • Once the repair is complete, it'll ask you to restart your computer, please do it;

Thx for the hint. I repaired the file permissions, alas still no luck - the update still won't install.

I have attached the log files of the update and the repair. Again, it's a .7z file disguised as .zip file.

I've never before encountered an update as stubborn as this one ;)

Sorry for the late reply. I'll be taking a look at your issue tonight. We are short-staffed at work this week so I don't have a lot of time to check the threads, and once I get home I have other things going on too but I didn't forget about you.

Hi Aura

Absolutely no problem at all. I totally understand your situation.

Besides: I just noticed that the update symbol on the shut down button has disappeared. So I checked windows update, which claims no important updates are available and ... ta taaa ... update KB3124275 has been installed successfully :)

I have no idea why it suddenly worked. Maybe it just needed a couple more restarts to unblock what ever was blocked from access before.

So, your suggestion of using Windows Repair AiO did the trick after all. Thanks a ton!

Have a nice weekend, soon and best regards
