Cumulative updates are very helpful for Windows 10 users because they bring their computers fully up to date, but every once in a while, there are some causing more harm than good. And KB3163018, the most recent cumulative update for Windows 10, seems to be doing just that.

As we reported yesterday, there were already isolated reports about KB3163018 failing to install and causing various problems on a number of Windows 10 PCs, and now more users seem to confirm that this update is indeed leading to different issues.

Most often, the update fails to install, and the computer starts “undoing changes,” and this is the most frequent error message that users are getting not only when trying to deploy this update but any of the previous cumulative update that caused similar problems.

I am one of the users currently stuck with the 'failed install' scenario; It's been that way for quite a while now.

I tried a few times to let win10 update and restart, which all failed of course, so now I'm stuck using my laptop in a semi-permanent, hibernation state. If I choose a full shutdown, I know I'm just setting myself up to waste another 15 minutes, (watching it fail to install, then undoing changes) the next time I boot Windows.

I try to embrace or at least accept change, rather than moan about it, but the changes to the Windows Update system in Windows 10, specifically the reduced amount of control over how updates are delivered, feels like a frustratingly backward step; one that shifts the balance of power firmly towards Microsoft. The combination of increased automation and the effort required to research each update's content, makes the experience feel less transparent to me.

I guess being a software developer, I am a little bit of a control freak, I use to love the freedom of picking and choosing from the 'available updates' list in Win7, the ability to ignore specific updates - perfect! (Now I've always run certified copies of Windows, but the classic Win7 update 'Windows genuine advantage tool' is another example of something I had no use for, which only existed because Microsoft felt like it needed more power)

....And now I'm moaning.
Self censorship - I'll stop now.

On a serious note though, whilst I wait in 'Hibernation limbo' - I'm scared to make any changes to my computer that will require a restart, like updating drivers, installing new software etc.

Well, for now I guess I'll just sit tight and keep one eye on Sysnative - depending on what you read, I might be better off without the update anyway!

If you're still reading this, thank you for the impromptu therapy session - I feel a bit better now. :)

It really is the 'Groundhog day' of Windows updates...

Now I find myself consciously not pushing any resource-heavy, demanding software too hard, (Adobe After Effects in this case), because if there's one thing more annoying than a BSOD, it's a BSOD followed by a forced update install, that's doomed from the start!

A couple of snippets from answers.microsoft.com suprised me too:

I've participated in the April update forum where it was asked about the update and there are over 1000 replies with people having problems.

The [fix] suggestion is silliness and really is fraught with risk manually changing the Registry. We ARE (I AM) able to get updates. The problem is with one specific part of the update package. The error is that the device drivers being foisted on us are from a Third-Party and were not adequately cleaned up when the install failed. Shame on Microsoft for that. It would seem to me that giving us a package that uninstalls the files for the AMD architecture kit that introduces the error. That will clean up the installed driver files so a valid SIGNED third party driver can be installed. There has been enough evidence of what the problem is that has been posted here for Microsoft to fix it. Such sloppy work makes me wonder how a behemoth of the software world grew to be so "esteemed".

Someone from Microsoft seriously suggested a manual Registry edit as part of a solution to end users?!

On the plus side, it's currently Steam Games Summer Sale! I'm off to buy a load a games I'll probably never even install...

I'm still in Windows Update Limbo-Land, ie not managed to successfully restart and finish the update yet.

Thought I'd have a quick look at the 'installed Updates' section; I must have missed the hotfix for time travel :lolg:
