Hello.

I have been trying to install monthly quality rollup updates since July, but they always failed to install , showing error 80073701.

I tried many solutions ( scan with malwarebytes, reset windows update, SURT), but the error persists.

Thank you for your help.

Warning: this fix is specific to the user in this thread. No one else should follow these instructions as it may cause more harm than good. If you are after assistance, please start a thread of your own.

  1. Download SFCFix.exe (by niemiro) and save this to your Desktop.

  4. On your Desktop, you should see two files: SFCFix.exe and SFCFix.zip.
  5. Drag the file SFCFix.zip onto the file SFCFix.exe and release it.
  6. SFCFix will now process the script.
  7. Upon completion, a file should be created on your Desktop: SFCFix.txt.
  8. Copy (Ctrl+C) and Paste (Ctrl+V) the contents of this file into your next post for me to analyse please - put
    Code:
tags around the log to break up the text.

SFC Scan

    sfc /scannow

Wait for this to finish before you continue

    copy %windir%\logs\cbs\cbs.log %userprofile%\Desktop\cbs.txt

Step#1 - FRST Fix
NOTICE: This script was written specifically for this user, for use on that particular machine. Running this on another machine may cause damage to your operating system
1. Please download Farbar Recovery Scan Tool and save it to your Desktop.
Note: You need to run the 64-bit Version so please ensure you download that one.
2. Download attached file and save it to the Desktop.
3. Extract it.

Noticed slow performanc the day after we did Windows Updates.

Anyway, C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows\WER\ReportQueue is filling up with folders named similar to:

Critical_6.1.7601_362645fc541e8f7790eb7374cdbd7636bbea56ba_cab_14c1c2b2

This folder contains CBS.LOG file and a few other related files.

A new folder is created ever minute or so until the HD fills. And PC has spurts of running slow. Windows updates runs and finds no needed updates.

Thoughts to fix?

(I have kept deleting, but it still keeps appearing until C: space runs out)
Thanks

Step 1. Stop the Windows Modules Installer service. Click Start and in the Search box type

services.msc

Press Enter and you see the Local Services list.

Step 2. Scroll down to the Windows Modules Installer service and double-click on it.

Step 3. Under Service status, click Stop. Click OK.
Step 4. Use File Explorer to go to C:\Windows\Logs\CBS. (If Windows is installed on a different hard drive, you have to go to that drive.)
Step 5. Move or rename all of the files in that folder.
Step 6. For good measure, delete all the "cab*" files in your Windows Temp folder, typically C:\Windows\Temp. Makecab won't ever delete them, so you get to.
Step 7. Reboot.
