Hi. I've tried to update to win1o and I keep getting the Modern Set Up Host stopped working message. I'm following the advice in
http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/...g/0a6fe667-89f9-4e56-94dc-6267b6f5e760?page=5
and I have run sfc /scannow
I have a text document from C:\WINDOWS\Logs\CBS to post if you can advise what is stopping win10 completing upgrade (it's 3286kB - quote big to copy and paste)
I am currently on win 8.1, I am using a DVD iso but the same happens from a USB tool. I have the Get Windows 10 icon on the lower right hand side (which just gives me 'we'll notify you when ready') and trying to upgrade from Win Update gives error CODE C190011F

Hi and welcome to Sysnative. This error is tricky and I don't know if we will be able to solve it but we can certainly try. Please do the following.

Step#1 - DISM /RestoreHealth Scan
Warning:this fix is specific to the user in this thread. No one else should follow these instructions as it may cause more harm than good. If you are after assistance, please start a thread of your own.

  1. Right-click on the Start
    w8start.png
button and select Command Prompt (Admin)
  2. When command prompt opens, Copy (Ctrl+C) and Paste (Right-click > Paste) the following command into it, then press Enter
    Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
  3. Once it finishes, copy and paste the following into the command-prompt window and press Enter. If prompted to overwrite the existing file go ahead.
    copy %windir%\logs\cbs\cbs.log "%userprofile%\Desktop\cbs.txt"
  4. Once this has completed please go to your Desktop and you will find CBS.txt => Please zip/upload to this thread.
Please Note:: if the file is too big (over 7MB) to upload to your next post, please upload via a service such as Dropbox or One Drive or SendSpace and just provide the link.

Hi Brian
thanks for your offer to help
I ran the tool and got
>Deployment Image Servicing and Management tool
Version: 6.3.9600.17031
[========================100.0%============================]
The restore operation completed successfully. The component store corruption was repaired.
The operation completed successfully.

I moved some photos off my PC, ran the tool again - I got the same message

I hope you can see this CBS file

it's 17.6MB

Thanks for the info. Please try the following.

Step#1 - Show Hidden Files
Please show hidden files by following the steps in the following article.
How to show hidden files in Windows 7

Step#2 -
Set Compatibility Settings
1. Now that you are showing hidden files, if you double click on your C:\ drive you will notice the following folder.
C:\$Windows.~BT
2. Go into this folder and you will see folders/files. One of them being setup.exe.
3. Right-click on setup.exe and select Properties. Select the Compatibility tab.
4. Check the box that says Run this program in compatibility mode for:
5. In the drop-down box, select Windows 7 and then click OK.
6. Now double-click setup.exe and follow the prompts to see if Windows 10 will install successfully.

I followed the steps to show hidden files

In C:$Windows.~BT there is a DUDowload folder with a Set Up folder with setupprep.exe
There is also a Sources folder with setup.exe
I changed the compatibility for the latter inc. for all users

I deleted some programmes to leave 36.8GB free of 111GB
restarted

double-clicking setup.exe gave me 0x80070002
changing the compatibility for the file on the dvd gave 0x80070005
changing the compatibility for the file on the USB stick at least gave me an opportunity to download and install updates, but then Modern Set Up host stopped working

---------
now for another option

I downloaded the ISO a while ago and, before I tried to upgrade to win10, I made a system image file of my win8.1 system
Using the DVD ISO, I managed to upgrade successfully to win10 but I couldn't connect to e-mail/internet so I rolled back to win8.1

could I use the system image file, on an external harddisk, to re-set my PC back to when the upgrade to win10 worked, and update the driver for the Ethernet/realtek so that will work, or am I at risk of corrupting it so none of it will work anymore? I've not used a system image file before

or should I wait until a better version of win10 comes out, or another option?

thanks for your continuing advice

I tried a Clean Boot including unistalling Anvi Smart Defender
Then attempted to install from the USB drive.

still the sam result: modern set up host stopped working

I have windows 7 and 8 disks

Can I re-set it to pne of those and go to win10 from there?

That's a tricky error. If you have your data backed up and don't mind doing a re-install then yes you can re-install Windows 7 or 8 from scratch and then upgrade.

You can also use the System Image you created to restore back as you mentioned. It's up to you how you want to approach this.

Did your OS come pre-installed on your machine from an OEM such as Dell, HP, Toshiba, etc? Or is it a retail version?

it came from DinoPC with win7 disks and I upgraded to win8 and ordered disks from MS

I'll try to restore to the system image I took first

after many 0x8007045a etc fails, file system corruption messages, I managed to restore from the system disk image and install win10. Now I have the original cant connect problem - but I have the win10 drivers for Realtek on a USB (maybe I should have installed them before updating?) but I cant log in using the password that worked for win8.1
If there is a thread here on how to get into win10 or use a Guest account or Admin account or use a third party programme, please let me know

As Chris from Family Guy says "Why is this so hard?"

Nice job! Installing the network drivers before hand may have worked but I have seen many systems where you need to install them after the upgrade. The password would not have changed during the upgrade. I'm unable to assist you with bypassing any security however the password should work. That doesn't make sense. You ensured your caps lock or num lock isn't on? I assume you did.

I've done many upgrades and have never had this issue. You only have one username on the machine correct?

yes just me here and I can log into One Drive via this old XP laptop using the old password, which is the only one I used on 8.1 on the PC

Oh...OK so you didn't use a local account. You used a live or Microsoft account. I don't think you will be able to login the first time without having a network connection. You may have to restore back to Windows 7 again, create a local account and then upgrade and sign in with the local account. Ensure that your internet works and then change to a Live account if that's what you want to use.

You may also get a second opinion with our software experts in the Windows 10 forum as they have much more knowledge of these types of issues.

It's a pain I know.

setting up a local account and giving it admin rights allowed me to get into win10 but continuing Ethernet / Realtek issues - despite win10 drivers etc, it just wont connect - I am again tempted to roll back to 8.1 unless I find a solution quick

What are you using as your Antivirus and/or Firewall? You may want to try uninstalling your security software and then uninstalling/reinstalling your Ethernet drivers.
