Hello Guys & Gals,

I have a question or two about Windows 8.1 and a GA-990fxa-ud3 R.4 mobo.

I had a windows crash and could not fix my system and i tried installing windows more than i wanted so I took it in to the shop and they fixed it for me.
I got the system home and it appeared to have worked but it was not till almost a week later I noticed a problem.
My 2 ESata ports are not working right as they each used to seee 4 sata drives each and now only see one drive each.
I found out that either the pre-load drivers were not put on or the wrong ones were or not at all.
I have been reinstalling my programs for over a week and really dont want to uninstall and reinstall windows again.

So now my question is there a way to install the pre-load drivers now that windows is already on system?
Or would it screw up my system and windows?

Your help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks in advance
Gren

Hi,
take a screenshot of your Device Manager. If you notice any yellow checkmarks, expand that category, find the offending device and double click it, so you can provide a screenshot of that particular device.

Hey Softwaremaniac,

I have checked that and no marks at all in device manager at all, no yellow exclamation marks and nothing red.
When I connect either of my 4 bay esata units to esata on one drive shows if I connect both my 4 bay units i get one drive showing from each and the others are not shown.
Even under storage in computer managment only one drive for each 4 bay unit.
I have tried clicking on the device listed and searching for driver but it say I have best driver installed.

From what i have been told by Gigabyte who makes my mobo they think wrong preload driver or no preload driver are the issue.
They could not or would not tell me if I can put the preload drivers on windows after windows is installed.

I was hoping someone here may know if I could install now without effecting my system in a bad way and without having to reinstall Windows yet again.

Thanks in advance
Gren

You should be able to install drivers no problem. Here's the link tom your mobo support page, you can find your chipset drivers there: GA-990FXA-UD3 (rev. 4.0) | Motherboard - GIGABYTE

Hey softwaremaniac,

I have been to that page sorted for my os and installed all drivers on my system except the Raid AHCI as I was told by gigabyte to just install the plain AHCI driver from raid section.
And the Pre-load driver during windows install may have been missed.
I spent an 1.5 hours on phone with gigabyte and we added Marvell 9128 AHCI/RAID driver both using automatic install and manual install using have disk option.
But even with those I could not get the esata to see all the drives and as usual only one drive for each 4 bay unit appeared.
And under computer management stoarge it also only showed one drive per 4 bay unit.

Before i had to reinstall windows they worked fine so I am not sure at all why they stopped working after a fresh install.
Right now the units are connected to USB 3 and the drives are all seen, but that takes up my usb 3 ports on back of system.
Thats why I wanted to get the esata working again to free up those ports as I need them, thou i need the drive working more.

Thanks in advance

Hey softwaremanic,

Sorry for this 2nd reply But i think i found the problem.
If i type msinfo32 it shows the following https://1drv.ms/i/s!Am1WbqxCs_uYighG-skeGk8H4icG
Now I am not sure why as it was installed using UEFI but that screen shows legacy under bios as you can see.
I tried changing the bios setting to UEFI Only and then it could not find a boot device.
My SSD is drive c: which is boot device so not sure why.

Can i safely change bios settings to UEFI without screwing up my windows install?

Thanks in advance

No problem. I've marked the thread solved. If you require further assistance, please post back.

Hey Softwaremaniac,

Sorry to bother you but I have another problem with system.
It seems my entire c: drive has been set to read only and I am unable to change it.
I have a personal computer and have local and admin accounts and am on as admin but the c: drive is totally read only.
The windows event log is full of access errors as it cant write to the drive.

How do i force c: drive to set all folders and files so I can access them and install stuff?

I never noticed the drive was like this till I tried to save something on the drive and now i cant do anything on it.

Thanks in advance

Hey,

Sorry I tried to edit but can't.
I am wrong about my system it is every drive that is set to read only.
All user security settings are greyed out and I can't change them I just checked.

How do i unlock all the folders on every drive and give me all access as I am admin?
Your help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance

Hello Softwaremaniac,

Sorry for the late reply I have my health got bad again so was off the computer for awhile.
i got all the read only issues fixed. I guess because the drives and folders were made by my original system before i had to reinstall it set almost everything to read only.
I activated the hidden Admin and then set folders to current user and now can access everything.

I have another question but will post a new thread so they stay on topic.

Thanks for the help.
