Hi,

I have developed this problem recently -- my MS updates show but they will not download. My Internet connection is not at fault. I tried troubleshooting with MS tools and a tool from Tweaking.com. but I am really not familiar at all with computers. Can anyone recommend something?

Thanks,
Clint.

Are you getting errors? Have you rebooted?

I have had this problem before and rebooting then manually telling Windows Update to check for errors again typically showed those updates no longer needed to be install (or were already installed). Have you scanned for malware?

Quite frankly I think that the problem is more serious than just the MS updates.I managed to damage the machine to such an extent that even after ordering recovery disks I was not able to restore it -- the hard disk drive password was frozen.Acer managed to get it running again but the secure boot is now not configured correctly and I have noticed numerous issues, such as freezing, apps not working, etc.Running sfc /scannow I get that there are problems that the tool was not a able to fixDISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /CheckHealth gives a clean reportBut DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth reports that there were errors, but that they have been repaired.(That is as much as I know to do.)I have used Kaspersky, McAfee, Avast, Malwarebytes, rootkit tools. Nothing has been flagged.Clint.

Follow the instructions here to have one of our WU experts take a look. Note these folks are stretched pretty thin so please have patience and they will get back to you.

I am not sure if this is directly related to the running of your tool but my Acer has just automatically downloaded 40 updates. However the MS updates still remain unchanged (i.e. not downloading).

Sorry -- do I post the report in this thread, or create another? I am not clear on that.
Thanks.
Normally in another but since this is in the right forum, this should do and hopefully one of the experts will see it soon. That said, all are volunteers with other family and work commitments - and projects that can only be completed on weekends so again, we appreciate your patience.

I have made the experts aware of your problem and you are in the queue. But help expedite resolution and saving a few steps, please follow the instructions in that link above for posting your CBS.log file too. Thanks.

Hello and welcome

Due to the precise nature of your corruption, you will receive help from a user named LiquidTension. He's one of our senior trainees here who's in his final phrase of his studies and needs to gain some real world experience in specific areas of Windows Update. This means that he'll be assisting you, but that I will first need to double check and approve his fixes before he posts them to you. If anything this is a good thing for you because it means that you've got at least two of us watching over your thread, but it will unfortunately add a slight delay between each reply. I hope that you understand and can accept the need for us to train up new members in this way in order to carry on doing what we do here, however, if for any reason you object to this setup, I will happily take on your thread myself.

Thank you very much for your understanding. We'll be with you very shortly.

Thank you,

I think that I have solved that problem. I refreshed my laptop, getting rid of all of my installed updates and started downloading them again from scratch. From what I can see most of the issues have been cleared up except for my Apps -- some of them don't work. I ran the Tweaking.com tool (all of them were not working initially) which fixed most, but not all. The system seems more stable and doesn't continuously freeze as it was doing.
I could run another check and post the log, if that would help?

Regards,
Clint.

Hello Clint,

Which applications do not work? Does an error message appear when trying to open these applications?

Please do the following:

MgeHyNE.png
SFC /Scannow

  • Press the Windows Key
    pdKOQKY.png
+ r on your keyboard at the same time. Type Notepad and click OK.
  • Copy the three bold lines below and paste into the Notepad document:

    sfc /scannow
    copy %windir%\logs\cbs\cbs.log "%userprofile%\Desktop\CBS.txt"
    del %0

  • Click Format. Ensure Wordwrap is unchecked.
  • Click File, Save As and name the file sfcscannow.bat.
  • Select All Files as the Save as type. Save the file to your Desktop.
  • Locate sfcscannow.bat
    lmRDSkT.png
on your Desktop. Right-click the file and click
    AVOiBNU.jpg
    Run as administrator.
  • Upon completion, a file (CBS.txt) will be created on your Desktop. Attach this file in your next reply.
  • Note: If the file is too large to attach, upload to a service such as Dropbox, One Drive or SendSpace and provide a direct download link in your next reply.

Thanks, I will run that soon. When I say that applications won't work I mean that Win 8.1 Apps won't work -- I ran Tweaking.com tool again which sorted out most of them, but still a few have a "cross" on them and won't open. The update problem seems to have sorted itself out, the laptop downloaded more than 180 updates overnight -- but not MS updates, when I checked "Windows Updates" there were 90 or so showing. I am just currently downloading the Essential ones. When finished will run SFC /Scannow with your instructions. Thank you for all your help and time. Clint.

Stupid question but please humour me: is it OK to do other things while sfc /scannow is running - such as installing updates, running VLC, etc., or will this effect the result of the scan?
C.

Hi Clint,

From here on out, please do not try other fixes such as the running of repair programmes. This will complicate the process.

SFCFix Scan

  • Please download SFCFix and save the file to your Desktop.
  • Ensure all open windows are closed.
  • Double-click SFCFix.exe to open the programme.
  • Follow the onscreen instructions.
  • Upon completion, a log (SFCFix.txt) will open. Copy the contents of the log and paste in your next reply.

After doing the above, please run Windows Update and install all important/critical updates until there are none left to install, or until you encounter an issue. Once done, rerun SFC as instructed below.

Please refrain from installing new software whilst SFC is running. You are better off initiating SFC and leaving your computer for the duration of the scan.
