Microsoft Edge a disaster after possible infection?

Let me preface this by saying: I only use Microsoft Edge at this point because other browsers are even worse on this particular PC. Chrome won't work at ALL (every single tab crashes no matter how many times I've freshly installed), and Firefox experiences horrible slowdowns after a few hours every use.

So yesterday I was using my PC as normal when I noticed a strange crowd cheering sort of sound for about 5 seconds at a clip, maybe every 30 minutes or so. I had no sounds playing in any browser tabs or applications other than Spotify, which it wasn't coming from. I ran AVG, Malwarebytes, and ESET. The only scan that found anything from ESET and it was some kind of coupon adware. (I have coupon printers installed for coupons.com so I figured it might have been one of those, oh well, I can resintall). I haven't noticed the noise happening any more today.

However, Edge is shot. Tabs are freezing and crashing every few minutes from normal use. Files aren't downloading normally; exe files download without a proper file extension, all photos download as "untitled.png." Everything downloads normally in Firefox.

Not sure what to do anymore, would appreciate any insight. This is my work PC so unfortunately I can't just reformat and call it a day.

Thanks

If you are having any of the problems like below with Microsoft Edge, then resetting Microsoft Edge settings to default and reinstalling Microsoft Edge may help.

When you reset Microsoft Edge, it will also delete all of your favorites in Microsoft Edge.

If wanted, you should back up your favorites in Microsoft Edge first.

1. Open Windows PowerShell by pressing the

+ S keys to open Search.

2. Type powershell into search box.

3. Right click the Windows PowerShell in the search results and select Run as administrator.

6. Restart your computer.

@softwaremaniac: I don't use any extensions or add-ons in Edge. Only uBlock Origin, Google Reverse Image Search, and Panel View for Google translate in Firefox. And nothing in Chrome when I try installing it, it's just a wreck from the start.

@FreeBooter: Executed as you said but still having the same issues.

No BSODs. Not old, maybe a couple years now.
