I keep several files on a Micro SD card which I have in a USB adapter and take with me to work and back home. It has been fine for months but today when I inserted it I see this:

need to format SD card.jpg

I click Cancel and see:

need to format SD card2.jpg

I thought maybe the USB adapter was somehow the problem so I took the SD card out of the adapter and inserted it into the SD card slot. I get the same messages.

Any ideas? I guess if I have to, I can copy the files to my hard drive, format the SD, and copy them back.

No, it is not write protected. I'm afraid I've lost all data on this SD card unless there is some magical way to retrieve it.

With the SD card plugged in and registering as E:
Open an elevated command prompt. In the prompt copy/paste this chkdsk E: /r and hit Enter.

Report back with any messages.

In Power Shell copy and paste: get-winevent -FilterHashTable @{logname="Application"; id="1001"}| ?{$_.providername –match "wininit"} | fl timecreated, message
This will give you a complete report.

Thank you but I am not familiar with Power Shell. Please let me know what text to paste and where to press Enter. Thanks in advance.

You're kind of in a bind. The data might be there (I doubt it) or it's been deleted or not (I can't tell) so if the disc is good it can be formatted, but of course you'll lose all data. The old Catch22.

Powershell is similar to the command interface. Hit start, type Powershell, right-click on Powershell, and run as admin.

Copy and paste the text (In Corday's post above) into it and hit Enter.

Now this is crazy. I plugged the SD card in with the intention of running Power Shell, and File Explorer recognized it! I have no idea how this happened and it certainly wasn't due to any effort on my part. I immediately copied all data to a separate USB flash drive and furthermore I'll back it up to my external hard drive. I'm not going to try to fix it at this point.

Thank you again.
