Many updates will not install on a Win 7 system

I have Win 7 SP1 64bit Professional on a Dell Inspiron PC.

For at least the past year a fair number of Windows updates have failed to install with various error messages (examples are given at the end of this post). Updates such as those for MS Office or MSE updates install without a problem but many others, including security updates, will not. I have also attempted to update from IE 9 to IE 11 (or IE 10 - this is sometimes suggested as a first stage) numerous times, all of which have failed. I have tried such things as SFC, SURT and the appropriate MS Fixit. I've done numerous searches on the Internet and found the various MS posts on the subject. Most non-MS search results simply reference the MS posts. Yours would seem to be one of the only two sites that actually address update problems rather than simply regurgitating MS material.

As requested, I have downloaded SFCFix.exe and run it. The contents of the resultant SFCFix.txt are:

I could not manage to attach the CBS.zip file, possibly because it was too large. I have therefore uploaded it to Dropbox. The link is below.

Hi Plotinus :)

My name is Aura and I'll be assisting you with your issue. Follow the instructions below please.

System Update Readiness Tool (SURT) - Scan
Follow the instructions below to run a scan with the System Update Readiness Tool (SURT) and provide a log;
  • Download the right version of SURT for your system;
    • Your version of Windows is: Windows 7 SP1 x64
  • Once downloaded, execute the installer, and go throught the installation (this process can take around 15-20 minutes);
  • On completion, a log will be created in C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\CheckSUR.log;
  • Attach this log in your next reply;
Alternatively, if these instructions are unclear for you, you can follow the tutorial below.

System Update Readiness Tool (SURT)

Thanks for the reply. I have downloaded and run SURT. As requested a copy of CheckSUR.log is attached.

SURT returned a clean log, alright. Follow the instructions below please.

System File Checker (SFC)
Follow the instructions below to run a SFC scan on your system and to provide the CBS log in your next reply;
  • On Windows Vista & 7, click on the Windows Start Menu, then enter cmd in the search box, right-click on the cmd icon and select
    Spcusrh.png
    Run as Administrator
  • On Windows 8, drag your cursor in the bottom-left corner, and right-click on the metro menu preview, then select Command Prompt (Admin);
  • On Windows 8.1, right click on the Windows logo in the bottom-left corner and select Command Prompt (Admin);
  • Enter the command below and press on Enter;
    Code:
    sfc /scannow
    Note: There's a space between "sfc" and "/scannow";
  • Once the scan is complete, enter the command below and press on Enter
    Code:
    copy %windir%\logs\cbs\cbs.log "%userprofile%\Desktop\cbs.txt"
  • A file called cbs.txt will have appeared on your Desktop. Upload the file on Dropbox, Google Drive or OneDrive and post the download URL for it here;
Note: Please note that the CBS.log is volatile, which means that if you don't upload it after the SFC scan is completed, it won't have the information from the scan anymore. So archive it and upload it as soon as you can.

For some reason it seems that your CBS.log didn't log the information from the SFC scan. Can you run it again and upload the new CBS.txt after that?

OK, I've repeated the process and uploaded the result. The Dropbox URL is Dropbox - cbs.txt

In case it helps, SFC reported no problems, the same as it has always done in the past.

I'm logging off now, so I'll check tomorrow for any new instructions.

I'm getting a 500 error on Dropbox when trying to access this file.

Looks like they are :P Alright, can you tell me which KB (updates) you are trying to install but won't?

As requested, please find attached a list of the updates that have failed since last October. I believe that the list is fairly complete. I have had update failures before this. I have also attempted a number of times to upgrade from IE 9 to IE 11, but this has failed every time.

KB3035583 Failed Error code: 8007054F

KB3083324 Failed Error code: 80070BC9

What error code are you getting when trying to upgrade from Internet Explorer 9 to 11?

I'll have to check that as I'm not sure I kept a record and I can't see any sign of it in installed updates. If necessary I'll try to upgrade again and note what it is. I'm logging off now but I'll post tomorrow.

Please try to upgrade again, and if it fails, give me the error code. Microsoft have a KB article with many common error codes for failure to upgrade to Internet Explorer 11, with specific solutions.

OK, I have attempted to install IE 11 which failed, as previous attempts have. The error message was:

Errors found: Code 9C57
Windows encountered an unknown error.

In case it helps I have uploaded the installation log IE11_main.log. The Dropbox URL is Dropbox - IE11_main.log
Near the end of this log there is a reference to an error in installing a prerequisite file related to KB2670838 which may, or may not, be relevant. Googling on the KB shows that many people seem to have problems with this particular KB, but I'm afraid that it's all well beyond me.

I tried installing KB3083324. It failed with the error message:
"The following updates were not installed: Update for Windows (KB3083324)"

I have uploaded WindowsUpdate.log. The URL is Dropbox - WindowsUpdate.log

CBS.log is large - 102MB. When I tried uploading it it was clear that at my current upload speed of a few kbps it would take literally hours. I therefore converted it to a zip file which reduced the size to about 4.9 MB - don't ask me why - and I have uploaded this. I hope that this will be satisfactory. The URL is Dropbox - CBS.zip

That's the error.
Code:
2016-03-11 22:02:04, Error CSI 00000024@2016/3/11:22:02:04.836 (F) d:\win7sp1_gdr\base\wcp\componentstore\storelayout.cpp(11690): Store corruption detected in function ComponentStore::CRawStoreLayout::CheckFamilyIndexForDeadWinnerComponent expression: (null)

Follow the instructions below please.
