Hello,
I have been trying to fix my computer for last 1 month without much success. If some expert from this website can help me, I will be grateful.

My computer has multiple problems:
1) After I run windows update, some updates run ok and computer works fine. But after installing some updates, when I restart windows, I reach a black screen with only mouse cursor available. I cannot get to the screen wherein I have to input my password to enter Windows7.

2) After doing multiple system restore, I ran SFC/ scannow and it found multiple errors that it couldn't fix. I have been doing this for almost a month now.

3) I downloaded SFCFIX.exe and ran it, it probably fixed some errors but it still shows 20 errors that it can't fix.

4) When I run Dell pre-boot diagnostics, it gives me 4 read errors for my disk. Maybe I need to use a tool like HDD Regenerator, I don't know.

If you guys can help me at least fix the SFC errors and windows update thing, then probably I can look at my disk issues, or maybe buy a new disk if that is the only solution.

Please tell me the steps to perform, I will do them and load any logs that you people need. Thanks a lot.

Ok, so after looking at other similar threads, I have gone ahead and did the first part.

I downloaded the SFCFix.txt which had
Code:
Collect::
CBS
inside it and I downloaded SFCFix.exe (by niemiro). I dragged SFCFix.txt onto SFCFix.exe, and it has uploaded the log files to the sysnative server.

Following is the content of the log file SFCFix.txt which was generated on my desktop after this process.

Please advise on further steps. Thanks everyone.

Hello rajiv and welcome to the forum :)

It looks like the CBS folder has not been uploaded.

Export CBS folder

  1. Click the Start button
    StartButton_16x16.gif
    then click Computer.
  2. Double-click on the C: drive, under the Hard Disk Drives category, and then scroll down to, and double click on the Windows folder.
  3. Find and double click on the Logs folder.
  4. Right-click on the CBS folder, and select Copy.
  5. Go back to your Desktop, right-click on it, and select Paste. You should now see a copy of the CBS folder appear on your Desktop called CBS.
  6. Right-click on this new folder, and navigate through Send to, and select Compressed (zipped) folder.
  7. A new file, also called CBS (CBS.zip), but this time with a different icon, will be created.
  8. Attach this to your next post please.
Please Note:: if the file is too big to upload to you next please post please upload via Dropbox or ge.tt

Hello rajiv,

chkdsk /f scan

Warning:: This fix is specific to the user in this thread. No one else should follow these instructions as it may cause more harm than good. If you are after assistance, please start a thread of your own.

Warning:: Before doing anything it is a good idea to back up any data/files that are important to you, in case your hard drive is dying. Please see Here

  1. Click on the Start
    Start%20Orb.jpg
button and in the search box, type Command Prompt
  2. When you see Command Prompt on the list, right-click on it and select Run as administrator
  3. When command prompt opens, copy and paste the following commands into it, press enter after each

    chkdsk /f

  4. Reboot
  5. Download ListChkdskResult.exe (by SleepyDude) from Here
  6. Double click on it to run it. It will take a few seconds to scan, then it will open a Notepad window with the log. Copy and paste the contents of this into your next post please!

Download and Run SFCFix

Please download and run SFCFix from >Here<

It will take about 15 minutes to process. Once the scan has completed a notepad file will launch with the results. Please copy and paste the entire contents of the results and post them back into this thread. Please put [CODE][/CODE] tags around the log to break up the text.

Hello rajiv,
chkdsk /f scan
  1. Download ListChkdskResult.exe (by SleepyDude)
Hi Go The Power, Thanks!

Below is the output of ListChkdskResult.txt, I am also attaching the ListChkdskResult.txt with this post. There are a lot of results in that file, with the top being the most-recent result, which I ran as per your instructions. Other results below are from previous runs, I have been running this utility few times this month.

One of your disks needs to be checked for consistency. You
may cancel the disk check, but it is strongly recommended
that you continue.

Hello Go The Power,
Thanks very much for assisting me on this. I will go and run Seatools for DOS and post back the results as soon as possible.
Meanwhile, I wanted to update you on some other things about my harddisk. I have a Western Digitial harddrive. 2-3 days ago, i ran the "Dell Pre-boot diagnostics" on harddrive and it identified 4 read and corresponding 4 seek errors in sectors in my harddrive. Then I went to Western Digital website and downloaded the "Data Lifeguard Diagnostics for DOS", made a bootable usb, and ran Diagnostics from DOS. It took 1.5 hours and surprisingly, all the tests results passed, and there was no failure/error.

After re-booting, I ran "Dell Pre-boot Diagnostics" again and this time it didn't catch any of the earlier 4 read/seek errors. So, it seems somehow these tools have managed to repair bad sectors on my hard drive. So, I think only issue is SFC errors now.

Above is for your information. Meanwhile, I will go and quickly run the diagnostics that you have asked me to and report back as soon as possible. Many Thanks.

Hello rajiv,

Seatools is very good at identifying harddrive failures. The results from your chkdsk scan were not too goof, its better to get another look with SeaTools just to make sure.

let me know how the scans went :)

Hello rajiv,

Hi Go The Power,

I managed to run SeaTools for DOS version 1.12. Results are
short test passed
LBA 625139712
read scan passed

Short Test was quick, long test lasted for 3.5 hours. It did just Read test, it didn't do Seek test. What do you think these results mean?

I spent 10 hrs yesterday trying to run SeaTools for DOS. My CD Drive has problems, so I couldn't use the CD bootable iso file. So, I tried following steps to make bootable USB, but I faced a lot of problems:
1) Used Rufus to make a bootable USB to run SeaTools, downloaded from Seatools website. Didn't work.
2) Used YUMI and couple other tools to make bootable USB running SeaTools downloaded from Seatools website. Didn't work.
3) I had to format my USB 4-5 times during the whole process. I tried both FAT32 and NTFS format, both quick and full format. Nothing worked.

4) Finally I used Rufus to make a bootable USB using UBCD (Ultimate boot CD). As a part of UBCD, there are almost 100 or so programs. SeaTools for DOS is one available program in UBCD. However, I got error when I tried to run the version 2 (GUI version) of SeaTools. I could only manage to run version 1.12 (Text Version) of Seatools. It appears that there is no functional difference between text version and GUI version. SeaTools website says both these versions have same level of diagnostic capability and both are updated and released together. So, I think I should be ok with version 1.12.
5) I had to change to ATA from AHCI in my Bios before running Seatools.

I hope I have done everything correctly.
Kindly let me know the next steps. Thank You Very Much.
Rajiv

Hello Ravjic,

That sounds like it was done correctly :)

What was the result from the LongTest?

Hi Go The Power,

1st line below is the result of short test. 3rd line below which states "read scan passed" is the result of the long test. I am not sure what 2nd line "LBA 625139712" means, maybe it refers to some sector on my hard drive.
Code:
short test passed
LBA 625139712
read scan passed
Best,
Rajiv

Hello,

From the information that SeaTools has reported there are no indications of any more bad errors on the disc. The results from chkdsk indicated that there were a lot of bad sector (disk corruptions) that chkdsk has now stopped from files being able to write too.
At this stage the HDD could go one of two ways:
  1. The Disk could be on its way out and will only get worse from here.
  2. A small section of disk is damaged, chkdsk has blocked it off, and the disk won't progress from here.
Unfortunately there is no way for us to tell at this point in time what the outcome\survival of your HDD will be.

From here what we can do is a couple of this to help stay on top to Monitor and Prepare for the worse. The most important thing to do from here is backup all of your important files, I cannot stress this enough, please make sure you do this! Along with the initial backup, please also back up regularly afterwards.

Let’s give it some time (no longer than a week) then run another scan with SeaTools using the Windows Long DST (Drive Self Test) Scan, and post the results back into this thread or create a new thread in the Hardware subform here: Hardware - Sysnative Forums for further analysis :)

If you have any questions please ask.

the files replaced well :)

But now some more corruptions are showing.

Can you please go to your desktop and deleted SFCFix.exe and SFCFix.txt.

Thanks for all your help!

I am going to copy all the important content from my hard drive into 2-3 usb sticks that I have tonight itself.

One more question. After you have helped me with the fixes for these corruptions, and everything runs fine, Shall I try to update my windows again and see if I face black screen problem again after updating windows?
