Will my computer problems never end?

I went to turn on my lenovo laptop with windows xp after it had been sitting for the past few months untouched (iPad, wife's laptop, work computer available so there was no need).

When I turn it on I do not hear the cooling fan, I used to be able to tell that it was on. It gets to the starting windows screen (never to the log in screen) then reboots, same if I go into safe mode.

Is it possible the fan quit and the overheating is causing the reboots or am I hooped and going to have to re-format and reinstall?

Hi Jared,

Make and model number please?

It is possible it is shutting down due to overheating and a dodgy cooling system.

Can you boot into the BIOS? Are any temperatures reported in the BIOS?

Try cleaning out any dust:

  1. Get a can of compressed air...
  2. Shut down and turn off your system...
  3. Unplug the system from any docking stations...
  4. Remove the AC Adapter and then remove the battery...
  5. Hold down the power button for 30 seconds to ensure all power is drained from the components. This closes the circuit and allows any remaining power to dissipate; it also clears the temporary memory of corruption and resets hardware/software connections. No permanent changes are made to the system doing this step...
  6. Use the can of compressed air to blow into every vent, crevice, keyboard key, USB port, VGA/monitor port, etc...
  7. Replace the battery and then plug in the AC Adapter...
  8. Replace the docking station...
  9. See how the system runs after doing all these steps...
WARNING: Never use a vacuum cleaner or hair drier to clean dust out of your system!!

A vacuum cleaner will cause static build-up and damage components due to the discharge. A hair drier can cause components to heat up and possibly break solder joints; it may also cause static buildup on a cooler setting depending on the hair drier.

Hey Stephen,

It's a Lenovo SL400.

I'll check the BIOS when I get home today and see what's up. I have to change the hinges in the laptop when they get here so I will make sure it is cleaned out when I do that.

Update. When booted to the bios the system runs for as long as i'm willing to leave it in the bios, no crashes.

Try to boot to safe mode, crashes (sometimes I catch a glimpse of a blue screen others not)

Tried putting in a windows xp disk and try to boot into the setup just to see what would happen, gets halfway through loading the files and crashes.

Long story short I've basically decided to try pulling the hard drive and checking it. Here's the problem, I want to pull some info off of the drive. I've got one of those sata to usb boxes but when I connect it to the computer it basically wants to format it before it will let me do anything.

What do I need to do to get the information off of this harddrive?
