[SOLVED] Latest Windows 10 update messed up my PC - cannot install updates now

Hi there!

Like many people the last big Windows 10 update has caused me grief. I am no longer able to use Windows Update to install pending updates. I'll try to provide as much info as I can, and if anyone can help it would be much appreciated.

Other Notes

I ran the Reset Windows Update Tool and chose "Resets the Windows Update Components" option but this encountered a few errors (unsure where the log file for this is?). I have not run "Deletes any incorrect registry values" as I am not sure if this is needed and wanted to get feedback on the above first.

FRST Registry Search
1. Click your Start button and type in cmd.
2.After you find the Command Prompt, right click on it and select Run as Administrator.
3. Copy and paste the following into the Command Prompt:

4. Please download Farbar Recovery Scan Tool and save it to your Desktop.
Note: You need to run the 64-bit Version so please ensure you download that one.
5. Run FRST64 by Right-Clicking on the file and choosing Run as administrator.
6. Copy and paste 17134.950.1.8 into the Search box and click the Search Registry button.
7. When the scan is complete a notepad window will open with the results. Please attach this to your next reply. It is saved on your desktop named SearchReg.txt.

Looks like I'll have to manually update to 1903 ... would you recommend doing so given the issues it appears to have?
 
Absolutely:

  1. Download the Media Creation Tool and save this to your desktop. Go ahead and run this as well. Note: Click the Download tool now button when you get to this link.
  2. Accept the License Agreement
  3. Download the ISO file to your desktop.
  4. Double-click on the ISO and then run the setup to try and upgrade your machine.



We want to get the ISO so that you don't have to keep downloading which can take hours.
 
OK I installed it without error during the process, but since then I've had 3 BSODs (kernel mode heap corruption, and 2 x Memory Management).
I re-ran SFC /scannow and it said there were errors. I've attached the latest CBS log - let me know what you think!

GSmartControl
Follow the instructions below to check your SMART status with GSmartControl:


  • Download the portable version of GSmartControl and save it on your Desktop;
  • Extract the zip file to your Desktop. Open the folder gsmartcontrol-1.1.3-win64 which should be located on your Desktop and double-click gsmartcontrol.exe to launch the program.
  • Identify your drive in the list (if recognized by the tool), and hover your mouse over it.
  • You should see something called: SMART status. It will either read: Enabled, in which case you should do the following:
  • Double-click on it to bring up its window (usually you'll find your drive by its size or its brand name);
  • Go to the Self-Tests tab, then select Extended Self-test in the Test type drop-down list and click on Execute (this test can take a few hours to complete);
  • Once the test is over, the results will be displayed at the bottom of the window. Please copy and paste these results in your next reply or take a screenshot;
  • Also, go in the Attributes tab and if you have any entries highlighted in red or pink, take a screenshot of the GSmartControl window and attach it in your next reply;
  • Please note: If the SMART Status reads: Unsupported, stop and let me know.

Results attached - it looks like there are some significant errors. I didn't experience any issues before the original (failed) Windows update and now I'm getting BSODs every fifteen minutes of various types... Is it possible that this has caused problems with the BIOS? Is it worth rolling back the 1903 update?

Memory errors usually manifest in random BSOD crashes. You just need to replace the RAM or the motherboard (depending what's gone bad, the RAM stick or the RAM slot on the motherboard). You need to test each stick of RAM in each slot to determine the cause.
 
Would this also cause the SFC /scannow errors though? The logs (attached) seem to suggest there are more problems here.

  2. Download the file below, SFCFix.zip, and save this to your Desktop. Ensure that this file is named SFCFix.zip - do not rename it.
  3. Save any open documents and close all open windows.
  4. On your Desktop, you should see two files: SFCFix.exe and SFCFix.zip.
  5. Drag the file SFCFix.zip onto the file SFCFix.exe and release it.
  6. SFCFix will now process the script.
  7. Upon completion, a file should be created on your Desktop: SFCFix.txt.
  8. Copy (Ctrl+C) and Paste (Ctrl+V) the contents of this file into your next post for me to analyse please - put [CODE][/CODE] tags around the log to break up the text.



SFC Scan


  1. Click on the Start button and in the search box, type Command Prompt
  2. When you see Command Prompt on the list, right-click on it and select Run as administrator
  3. When command prompt opens, copy and paste the following commands into it, press enter after each

    sfc /scannow

    Wait for this to finish before you continue

    copy %windir%\logs\cbs\cbs.log "%userprofile%\Desktop\cbs.txt"
  4. This will create a file, cbs.txt on your Desktop. Please attach this to your next post.
