Hello,

I have read that you guys are one of the best out there on the internet, so here I am. I just hope that my problem is still solvable without a reset.

Last night I started my update from Windows 10 1803 to 1903 (yes, I did skip one) but my laptop shut down at about 30% completion because the charger wasn't plugged in 🤦‍♂️. I then started the laptop, and it read 'Undoing changes to your computer'. After a while I was able to log in. As soon as it logged me in, I ran 'sfc /scannow', it read that there were some files it couldnt fix. Then I ran Chkdsk with the /r parameter and let it run overnight. No problems there.

After reading the posting guide, I ran sfc again and then used SFCFix. On first run, Step 1 failed (server something error), then it got to step 6, after which it read that it had a terrible error. I reported it. Tried again and couldn't get up to step 2, but Step 1 seemed to have worked. Once again, reported the error.

Information about my laptop; HP Laptop running Windows 10 Home, version 1803 (Installed on 13/06/18) OS Build 17134.950 It is an AMD, 64bit .

I checked this morning and Windows Update is downloading the update again.

I have attached the following:
  • [cbsthurs.log] CBS Log from last night, (after 'undoing changes', note that the scan has probably run over midnight - ended at 5:00 on 23rd.) (22/08/19)
  • [cbsrecent.log] CBS Log from today (Recent) (23/08/19)
  • [sfcfix 1.txt, sfcfix 2.txt] SFCFix files saved on desktop, from first and second try, but they seem to be empty.
  • [chkdsk.txt] Chkdsk results from last night. (copied from Event Viewer.)
The SFCFix folder in C:/ is NOT included, the crash files add up to over 200mb

Thanks in advance, @samms

Hello and thank you for the kind words!

Please right-click SFCFix and select Properties. On the dialog which will open, you should see a Security section at the bottom left and a button to Unblock it.

Please check that box and hit OK. Does SFCFix still crash?

Afterwards, proceed with the following instructions:

Step#1 - DISM /RestoreHealth Scan
Warning:this fix is specific to the user in this thread. No one else should follow these instructions as it may cause more harm than good. If you are after assistance, please start a thread of your own.

  1. Right-click on the Start button and select Command Prompt (Admin)
  2. When command prompt opens, Copy (Ctrl+C) and Paste (Right-click > Paste) the following command into it, then press Enter
    Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
  3. Once it finishes, copy and paste the following into the command-prompt window and press Enter. If prompted to overwrite the existing file go ahead.
    copy %windir%\logs\cbs\cbs.log "%userprofile%\Desktop\cbs.txt"
  4. Once this has completed please go to your Desktop and you will find CBS.txt => Please zip/upload to this thread.
Please Note:: if the file is too big (over 7MB) to upload to your next post, please upload via a service such as Dropbox or One Drive or SendSpace and just provide the link.

Thanks for the speedy reply,

There seems to be no section to unblock it. As far as I'm aware, having to unblock files is only required when downloading, say, a Word document and such. I tried the security tab, see images.img1.PNGimg2.PNG.

DISM is running now, will let you know results when it is done.
PS; Isn't it 9PM in Croatia right now? Thanks for staying up late (past dinner) for helping us out!!

This is what I got on cmd:

I won't be able to answer or do anything until tomorrow.

Okay. No problem:

Retrieve Components Hive
1. Navigate to C:\Windows\System32\Config and locate the COMPONENTS file.
2. Please copy this file to your desktop.
Note: If you receive an error that this file is in-use, simply reboot your computer and try again.
3. Right-click on this file on your desktop and select Send To...Compressed (zipped) folder. This will create a file named COMPONENTS.ZIP on your desktop.
4. The file will likely be too large to upload here so please upload to a file sharing service. Examples of services to upload to are Dropbox or OneDrive or SendSpace and then just provide the link in your reply.

Sorry for the late respone time, I woke up just 3 hours ago.

Please see the link: COMPONENTS.zip
Also: Windows Update is trying to make me update to 1903, and now I can't shut down without updating. Right now I am just putting the laptop into sleep between uses. See image:

Ps: What is this for? I am just interested in finding out how you guys do it. Also, what time zone is the forum on?

Many thanks, @samms

COMPONENTS is a store of information about the registry about the critical system files.

Go ahead and try the upgrade to 1903. We may be able to do this the fast way.

Not sure about the timezone.

I have now started the update. When it is done, do I need to do any sorts of tests when it’s done?

Well done, please do the following:

Nothing really happened. You just needed to restart the process. The sudden reboot has corrupted some of your files on the old installation, but these were not critical and were automatically fixed by the upgrade :-)
