Hi, I'm trying to install 2023-04 Security Monthly Quality Rollup for Windows Server 2012 R2 for x64-based Systems (KB5025285) on a Server 2012 R2 VM but it keeps failing with error 0x800F0831. Manually downloading and installing the update file from Microsoft Update Catalog gives the same result. This was also happening on the March 2023 Security Monthly Quality Rollup. Running dism /online /cleanup-image /checkhealth gives 'No component store corruption detected'.

I've attached the CBS logs, the ComponentScanner.txt file and the zipped COMPONENTS file can be downloaded here - any help on this would be appreciated.

Great.
Restart the machine.
Open an elevated command prompt.
Copy and paste the following commands into it, press enter after each.

Code:
sfc /scannow
Wait for this to finish before you continue

Code:
copy %windir%\Logs\CBS\cbs.log "%userprofile%\Desktop\cbs.txt"
This will create a file, cbs.txt on your Desktop. Zip this file and attach the zipped cbs.txt to your next post.

The log looks clean.
Try to install KB5025285 again and report the result.
If it fails attach a fresh copy of the file cbs.log to your next reply.

KB5025285 failed again after downloading from Microsoft Update Catalog and running the .exe. Here's the zipped cbs.txt:

The cbs.log is clean again.
Try to install KB5025285 again and provide a screenshot of the result.
If it fails attach a fresh copy of the file C:\Windows\Logs\DISM\dism.log to your next reply.

Is update KB5025288 installed ?

Hmmm, looks like it actually has installed - should've checked first, sorry. Windows Update is still flagging KB5023765 (March 2023's Security Rollup) as available even though it's been superseded which I think threw me. Thanks for all of your help with resolving this!

KB5029312 (2023-08 Security Monthly Quality Rollup for Server 2012 R2 x64) is now failing to install on this same machine even after running dism /online /cleanup-image /restorehealth - please see the attached zip file which contains cbs.log and dism.log.

All other updates (e.g. KB5028957, KB5028962, KB5028970) installed without any issues - only KB5029312 is failing. Any help on this would be appreciated again.

Restart the machine.
Next, do following only.

Install Update with DISM
  1. Download the update MSU here: https://catalog.s.download.windowsu..._21a755f91fb3893406bdc316548f1ef6d054cb5e.msu
  2. Copy the MSU file to a convenient location (such as C:\temp).
  3. Click on the Start button and in the search box, type Command Prompt
  4. When you see Command Prompt on the list, right-click on it and select Run as administrator
  5. When command prompt opens, copy and paste the following commands into it, press enter after each

    cd C:\temp

replace C:\temp with your path if different

    expand windows8.1-kb5029312-x64_21a755f91fb3893406bdc316548f1ef6d054cb5e.msu -f:* C:\temp

    DISM.exe /Online /Add-Package /PackagePath:C:\temp\windows8.1-kb5029312-x64.cab

  6. You should receive the message:
    The operation completed successfully.
Make sure to allow the computer to restart if prompted.
  7. If you receive any other message:
Post a screenshot of the Commandprompt window.
Zip and attach the file C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\CBS.log

Installation of the update failed - here are the details as requested:

Here's the requested info - I took the logs immediately after running the command so hopefully the error should show up in them.

Still a clean cbs.log.
Lets have a look at some settings.

FRST Scan:
Warning: This script was written specifically for this user, for use on that particular machine. Do not run this script on another machine.
  1. Download the Farbar Recovery Scan Tool and save it to your Desktop:
64-bit: Downloading Farbar Recovery Scan Tool
Note: Your antivirus program may report FRST incorrectly as an infection. If so, disable the real-time protection when downloading and running FRST.
  2. Download the attachment fixlist.txt and save it to your desktop.
  3. Right-click on FRST.exe and select "Run as administrator".
  4. Press the Fix button.
  5. The tool will now process fixlist.txt.
  6. If for some reason the tool needs a restart, please make sure you let the system restart normally. After that let the tool complete its run.
  7. When finished, a log called Fixlog.txt will appear in the same directory the tool is run from.
  8. Attach the logfile Fixlog.txt to your next reply.
