Hi, everyone.
I've recently reinstalled Windows 7 on a friend's old computer, but for some reason I cannot complete the installation of those ~200MB Security/Preview "Monthly Quality Rollups", KB4524157, KB4534310, KB4539601 (optional).
Initially KB4524157 failed to install, but after I disabled the Windows Update service, deleted the contents of C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution\DataStore, enabled the WU service again and rebooted the pc, it seemed like that update had been installed and the issue was now KB4534310 and KB4539601. However, after having problems installing the latter 2 updates and trying to solve the issue in a number of ways, it became obvious that KB4524157 was not installed correctly if at all, and it even appeared again as an important update in WU sometimes.
I've already tried the download/expand/DISM solution and it fails with the following message:
Code:
C:\temp>DISM.exe /Online /Add-Package /PackagePath:C:\temp\Windows6.1-KB4524157-x86.cab

The system cannot find the file specified.

The DISM log file can be found at C:\Windows\Logs\DISM\dism.log
I've attached C:\Windows\Logs\DISM\dism.log to see if it helps.
SFC and SURT report nothing wrong, nor does SFCFix as you can see below:

Retrieve Components Hive
1. Navigate to C:\Windows\System32\Config and locate the COMPONENTS file.
2. Please copy this file to your desktop.
Note: If you receive an error that this file is in-use, simply reboot your computer and try again.
3. Right-click on this file on your desktop and select Send To...Compressed (zipped) folder. This will create a file named COMPONENTS.ZIP on your desktop.
4. The file will likely be too large to upload here so please upload to a file sharing service. Examples of services to upload to are Dropbox or OneDrive or SendSpace and then just provide the link in your reply.

Hi, xBlueRobot, thanks for your reply.
Here's the link to COMPONENTS.zip at SendSpace as requested (WeTransfer didn't allow me to post this file now for some reason):
COMPONENTS.zip
If there's any issue and the download doesn't work just tell me and I'll try to post it somewhere else.

Thank you very much,
Omnibux.

Edit: I've managed to upload it to WeTransfer too, it's the link below:

Step#1 - FRST Fix
NOTICE: This script was written specifically for this user, for use on that particular machine. Running this on another machine may cause damage to your operating system
1. Please download Farbar Recovery Scan Tool and save it to your Desktop.
Note: You need to run the 32-bit Version so please ensure you download that one.
2. Download the attached fixlist.txt and save it to the Desktop.
Note. It's important that both files, FRST and fixlist.txt are in the same location or the fix will not work (in this case...the desktop).
3. Run FRST by Right-Clicking on the file and choosing Run as administrator.
4. Press the Fix button just once and wait. If for some reason the tool needs a restart, please make sure you let the system restart normally. After that let the tool complete its run.
5. When finished FRST will generate a log on the Desktop (Fixlog.txt). Please post the contents of it in your reply.

Hi and thank you once again for your help xBlueRobot.
Here's Fixlog.txt.

Once again, thank you very much.

Could you please attempt to install one of the problematic updates and then provide the CBS log if it fails.

Hi, xBlueRobot.
RIght after running FRST and copying Fixlog.txt to a different folder, I rebooted the system and tried to install KB4534310 with Windows Update, which failed again with the same error.
Then, after reading your message I've tried to install it again using the exapand/DISM route and then tried the same with KB4524157, and both failed exactly the same way as before.
Below is a link to the CBS folder after those attempts.
Once again, thank you for your help.

Unfortunately, it appears to be the same error as last time. Could you please open command prompt and enter the following command:

Thank you, could you please try the following:

SFCFix Script
Warning: this fix is specific to the user in this thread. No one else should follow these instructions as it may cause more harm than good. If you are after assistance, please start a thread of your own.
  1. Download SFCFix.exe (by niemiro) and save this to your Desktop.
  2. Download the file below, SFCFix.zip, and save this to your Desktop. Ensure that this file is named SFCFix.zip - do not rename it.
  3. Save any open documents and close all open windows.
  4. On your Desktop, you should see two files: SFCFix.exe and SFCFix.zip.
  5. Drag the file SFCFix.zip onto the file SFCFix.exe and release it.
  6. SFCFix will now process the script.
  7. Upon completion, a file should be created on your Desktop: SFCFix.txt.
  8. Copy (Ctrl+C) and Paste (Ctrl+V) the contents of this file into your next post for me to analyse please - put [CODE][/CODE] tags around the log to break up the text.

Afterwards, please run SFC again and then attach the latest CBS log if it fails.

Hi again, xBlueRobot.

I've ran
Code:
C:\Windows\system32>sfc /scannow
Right after SFCFix, then cold booted the notebook and ran it again: no integrity violations or any other errors whatsoever.
What should I do now?

Thank you once again,
Omnibux.

Please try one of the updates which failed in the past, it should hopefully install now. If it fails, then please provide the latest CBS log as before.

Hi, xBlueRobot.
I've tried to install KB4534310 with Windows Update, which failed with the same error, then tried the same update and KB4524157 with the expand/DISM, which also failed the same way as before.

Any ideas on what should I do next?
Thank you very much,
Omnibux.
Oh, I almost forgot, here's the CBS folder after these attempts:

Apologises! I can see what I've done wrong now, I've amended the wrong registry key. Please follow these steps:

  1. Please run the attached fixlist.txt with FRST32 as you did before; this will add the appropriate key value and remove the erroneous one
  2. If successful, then please run the SFCFix script and if that is successful, then please run the SFC command as you did previously
  3. Install one of the problematic updates and then attach the CBS log if it fails

Hi, xBlueRobot, no need to apologize and thank you once again.

So I did as you told and downloaded both files to the Desktop, ran FRST with the new fixlist.txt, saw that there were no problems, rebooted, dragged SFCFix.zip on top of SFCFix.exe, saw again that there were no problems, ran 'sfc /scannow' without any issues, rebooted ran 'sfc /scannow' without any issues again, then tried installing KB4534310 with Windows Update: initially it seemed like it was going to install the update, it was even possible to see "downloading 95% percent" and other messages like it, but then it failed the exact same way with the exact same message and error code. I then proceeded to try to install KB4534310 with DISM, which failed the same way as before, and then tried DISM with KB4524157, which also failed the same way.
Here's the CBS folder after all this:
CBS4.zip

Once again, thank you very much,
Omnibux.

It's the same issue but a different file this time:

I'll prepare a similar fix for you as last time.

Hi, xBlueRobot.

I did as you said and dl'ed fixlist.txt, saved it to Desktop, ran FRST and rebooted the machine.
I then tried to install the update with Windows Update and it failed the same way -though it seemed to get closer to work this time.
Here's the Fixlog.txt:

The messages are in Portuguese but it's just saying that everything went fine, no issues, except when creating a restoration point, which always fails because it is disabled.
