So I've been trying to get KB4512506 installed on a Server 2008R2 x64 machine for about a week now. Event Viewer gives me this reason:
Windows update "Security Update for Windows (KB4512506)" could not be installed because of error 2147942402 "The system cannot find the file specified." (Command line: ""C:\Windows\system32\wusa.exe" "C:\Temp\windows6.1-kb4512506-x64_84e26e414da5d56991c15de19a93824d23b82e89.msu" ")
I've got the SHA-2 update (KB4474419) and Servicing Stack update (KB4490628 & KB4474419) installed successfully. Ran the SFC /scannow with no issues, Installed the System Readiness tool (KB947821) and no luck there either.

I did a bit of digging in the CBS.log and found this error:
Failed to find file: amd64_microsoft-windows-s..-downlevel.binaries_31bf3856ad364e35_6.3.9600.18792_none_5f5daf78ff7bbc14\MsSpellCheckingFacility.exe [HRESULT = 0x80070002 - ERROR_FILE_NOT_FOUND]
. Which is below the pre-stage step:
Exec: Staging Package: Package_1825_for_KB4512506~31bf3856ad364e35~amd64~~6.1.1.9, Update: 4512506-5099_neutral_LDR, PinDeployment: amd64_e2eee96e2f4e1148c4c65909cf622e10_31bf3856ad364e35_7.6.7601.24436_none_fd95aa3a8e7d44c8

Ran SCFFix and it returned 0 issues.

I even tried installing the last two (July and August) Security Only patches but no go there either.

Thanks in advance for any help!

Hello and welcome!

When able, do the following:

Install Update with DISM

  1. Download this update and save to your desktop. The file name will be Windows6.1-KB4038777-x64.cab.zip.
  2. Right-click on this file and select Extract All... Click the Extract button. You can close the folder window that opens
  3. Click on the Start button and in the search box, type Command Prompt
  4. When you see Command Prompt on the list, right-click on it and select Run as administrator. Go ahead and allow if you receive the UAC prompt.
  5. Copy and paste the following command into the command prompt window and press enter.

    dism /online /add-package /packagepath:%userprofile%\desktop\Windows6.1-KB4038777-x64.cab
  6. You should receive the message:
    The operation completed successfully.
Restart Windows to complete this operation. <---You may not get this line.
Do you want to restart the computer now (Y/N)? <---You may not get this line.

Go ahead and do so if prompted. Let me know what errors if any come up. If you do get errors, please zip/attach your CBS.log

Note: If you get an error saying that no packages were found that require processing, please use the following command instead:

dism /online /add-package /packagepath:%userprofile%\desktop\Windows6.1-KB4038777-x64.cab\Windows6.1-KB4038777-x64.cab

Perfect! I just dl'ed the KB, installed it, rebooted the server and the install worked after that.

I was already had the Update catalog page open so I just dl'ed the whole KB. It's a small update so I think it took longer to reboot the server than it did to download and install. All of this for 3 or 4 servers that we're holding on migrating to Azure...
