Hi and thanks in advance for your help!

I am helping a friend with a Dell XPS 8300 tower with Windows 7 Pro SP1. When he gave it to me, "Windows failed to start" black screen. I ran MemTest and found one of four 2GB sticks of RAM gone bad. Replaced it. Ran ChkDsk and it fixed a bunch of stuff and now Windows boots.

Prior to the "Windows failed to start" issue, File Explorer was crashing with Visual C++ Runtime error. I was able to isolate this as an Explorer plugin from McAfee Backup and disable it. Now File Explorer works normally.

The final issue, that I have not resolved, is Windows Update May 2018 Rollup KB4103718 getting almost complete but then hanging forever during the installation (not post-reboot configuration). I have to stop the WU service and reboot, after which it gets offered again in Windows Update.

I tried renaming the SoftwareDistribution folder and then Windows Update was offering previous monthly rollup(s), so maybe they never got installed either? (Again, not my PC, helping a friend.)

*** I just uninstalled McAfee Total Protection, rebooted, ran the McAfee Removal Tool, then rebooted, then...

I tried installing KB4103718 from the MSU via:
expand {update name}.msu -f:* C:\temp
DISM.exe /Online /Add-Package /PackagePath:C:\temp\{update name}.cab

Here is the result:

ANY HELP WOULD BE GREATLY APPRECIATED!

I started the WU install of KB4103718 and Windows Malicious Software Removal Tool x64 - May 2018 (KB890830) 5 hours ago. Windows Malicious Software Removal Tool was successful but KB4103718 is still installing - the green progress bar is _almost_ at 100%. So it does not actually fail, it hangs there and I have to restart Windows. Then I believe it will try to "configure update" but hang there forever and I have to force the PC off.

CBS.log attached: View attachment CBS.log

I will leave the installation running as is until I hear back from you. Thanks!

Unchanged. 5+ hours still installing in Windows Update with the progress bar just shy of 100%. CBS.log is up to 193 MB! Let me know if you want me to upload it

GSmartControl
Follow the instructions below to test your hard drive health with GSmartControl:

  • Download GSmartControl and save it on your Desktop;
  • Execute gsmartcontrol.exe; Let the install complete and launch the programme.
  • Identify your drive in the list, and double-click on it to bring up it's window (usually you'll find your drive by it's size or it's brand name);
  • Go in the Perform Tests tab, then select Extended Self-test in the Test type drop-down list and click on Execute (this test can take a few hours to complete);
  • Once the test is over, the results will be displayed at the bottom of the window. Please copy and paste these results in your next reply;
  • Also, go in the Attributes tab and if you have any entries highlighted in red or pink, take a screenshot of the GSmartControl window and attach it in your next reply;
    info_failing.png

Running Extended Self-test, will post results in a few hours. Before the test, SMART info looks okay, no red or pink. Will post screenshot after test.

Thanks again for your help!
