I did a search on the error shown above and found a post with the same error. I did the WRONG thing and proceeded to run SFC /SCANNOW and Convert CBS.log to CBS.txt.
After I registered and read all the instructions, I learned that I shouldn't have done that. SO,,,, I ran SFCFIX and got the following result:

Microsoft Windows [Version 6.1.7601]
Copyright (c) 2009 Microsoft Corporation. All rights reserved.C:\Windows\system32>SFC /SCANNOW
Beginning system scan. This process will take some time.
Beginning verification phase of system scan.
Verification 100% complete.
Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix some of them.
Details are included in the CBS.Log windir\Logs\CBS\CBS.log. For example
C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\CBS.log
C:\Windows\system32>cmd /c copy %windir%\logs\cbs\cbs.log "%userprofile%\Desktop
\cbs.txt"
1 file(s) copied.
C:\Windows\system32>
I tried attaching the files from Scannow, and SFCFix, but after waiting several minutes with nothing happening, I gave it up. I'm out of time now, but I'll try to follow the instructions at a later time for large files as shown in the welcome posting.

The first thing you want to do is to zip the CBS file. So right-click on it and select Send To...Compressed (zipped folder). It will create a file named CBS.zip. Then upload this to SendSpace and just provide me a link. Thank you.

Looks good. The remaining corruptions related to telemetry are benign and can safely be ignored. Please download KB2901983 and save to your desktop. Try installing from the downloaded file.

Let me know how it goes. Thanks.

Thanks for the info. Please do the following.

Step#1 - System Update Readiness Tool (SUR)
1. Download and run the following file.
2. When it asks you if you wish to install, please answer yes. Note: It could take 15 minutes or more to run. Please don't cancel.
3. You will get an Installation Complete screen when it's done running.
4. Please attach the log from the following location. C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\CheckSUR.log
Please Note:: if the file is too big to upload to your next post please upload via a service such as Dropbox or One Drive or SendSpace and just provide the link.

Thanks for the info. Please do the following.

Attempt to install the failing update again. Once it fails please do the following.

Using the .NET Collect Utility

  1. Download collect.exe and save to your desktop.
  2. Go ahead and run the tool
  3. The utility creates a compressed cabinet of all the needed logs to %TEMP%\vslogs.cab.
  4. Please zip/attach to this post or if too large, send using a service such as SendSpace.

Thank you. Please download and install this hotfix. If we look at some of the errors in your logs...

Code:
MSI (s) (B8!D0) [11:53:53:321]: SECREPAIR: Crypt Provider not initialized. Error:0
Error 997. Overlapped I/O operation is in progress.

And compare that to this article, I think it's a logical thing to try. Let me know how it goes.

Thank you.

Hotfix KB3000988 did not work.
Got message: "Update for Windows (KB3000988) is already installed on this computer."
This was also reported by several others in the link for Error 997 that you gave me.
There was also a possible resolution provided by M (20 Jan 2015 6:48 AM), which worked for some folks. but I didn't dare try it on my own.

Please advise.
