Hi, I'm back again (I was here for some (solved) CBS log problems recently). I'm not sure if I should be posting about this problem at this forum, but thought if anyone would know, you would. : ) If I should post somewhere else, please direct me.

I have a Vista notebook, Toshiba Satellite, and it's working well except for a connection problem that I've had since I set up my wifi network a few years ago. I actually thought getting disconnected all the time was normal, but when I posted at the Gardenweb computer forum about some optional updates (one being an update to Intel driver update for Intel(R) WiFi Link 5100 AGN), I later discovered that I had a problem with Microsoft ISATAP Adapter #2 (specifically, "This device is not working properly because Windows cannot load the drivers required for this device (Code 31)"). And, I wondered if this could be contributing to the problem. I'm pretty sure the problem isn't the router since I have reset settings, re-booted, etc., several times in the past, with no change.

I did update the Intel WiFi driver about a week or two ago, and have noticed much better connectivity. However, I still lose the connection periodically, but not like it was doing in the past - although I thought yesterday was worse than the day before, etc.

My question is, should I even worry about the ISATAP Adapter problem, or should I just leave things alone (as I've found has been suggested as a 'solution' to the problem) and put up with occasionally losing my connection? I don't want to do anything that will make things worse so I thought I would ask your opinion(s). Here is the link for the Gardenweb post about Optional Updates, in case it offers something of importance: http://ths.gardenweb.com/forums/load/comphelp/msg0908372932415.html?36

Thank you.

Hi -

The Microsoft ISATAP adapter driver = tunnel.sys, the same driver listed under "Teredo Tunneling Pseudo-Interface". It's related to iPv6.

http://sysnative.com/drivers/driver.php?id=tunnel.sys

You can see all in Device Manager -
Start | type devmgmt.msc | "View" tab | "Show hidden devices" | Expand "Networking"

I have an Intel 5100 wifi here and have never, ever had connectivity problems.

I'd like to see some system files. Please run --> https://www.sysnative.com/forums/sh...-Windows-7-amp-Vista?p=303&viewfull=1#post303

Skip steps 5 & 6; #4 - attach the zip file to your next post here.

I found a thread at Microsoft forums which runs the gauntlet for solutions on this-

http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/...s-device/757db042-c91e-464c-b963-c1f442fdf925

Let's see if the files yield any clues.

That was the application log. System log is empty.

Create a system restore point -
START | type rstrui

Go into Device Manager, enable hidden devices and uninstall ALL devices under Networking.

Re-boot.

Vista will reinstall the drivers.

Hi jc, I followed your instructions, and luckily created a restore point first, but I won't restore until I hear from you. I counted my devices under Network Adapters first, before uninstalling them, and there were 16. I couldn't uninstall the seven WAN miniports, however. When I rebooted my computer, only 11 devices came back. So... I'm not able to connect to my network at all. I'm using another computer right now to respond. I'll wait to hear from you before I do anything else.

I'll re-do my math. There were 16, but I only uninstalled 9, and left 7 WAN miniports. Then only 4 came back (plus the 7 that were already there) = 11. So 5 are missing.

I couldn't take it - I restored. Everything is back, thank goodness. Including the malfunctioning ISATAP Adapter #2, which is kind of ok with me at this point - lol. Anyway, I'll wait and see what you say, jc.

Check Event Viewer - System Log.

I'd like to know if there are any entries or not.

I have 12 items under Networking in Device Manager here.

Did you look through the MS thread?

I'm afraid I won't be much help because when I try to open the system log it says it cannot be viewed. Then again I've never checked System Log before so maybe I'm not doing it correctly?

I have 12 items under Networking in Device Manager here.

Just to verify, mine is actually called Network Adapters (I don't see the word 'Networking') in Device Manager, so we're talking about the same thing I hope? There are 16 items under Network Adapters, so that's why I mention it.

Diud you look through the MS thread?

Yes, I did. I'm afraid it's mostly Greek to me.

Hi -

The system log would have the entries related to Networking I'm looking for.

Bring up an elevated Admin CMD screen -
START | type cmd | Right-click on cmd | "Run as Administrator" | Paste this command in:

Code:
dir /a/o:n %windir%\system32\winevt\logs >0 & start notepad 0

A Notepad will open. Save it as a text file & attach to next post.

What exact problems are you having?

Is network connectivity an issue or is it just seeing ISATAP Adapter #2 in Device Manager with a yellow flag?

You should be able to ignore that ISATAP device driver message. Here's a Microsoft KB article on it.

If your wireless internet connection is dropping, the # 1 cause is usually interference with the router's wireless signal or being too far from the router. If your router is more than 5 years old, it could be an issue with the router itself, which I've run across a lot with Vista computers. 2 things you can do are try and update the firmware for your router or run program like Xirus WiFi inspector then post a screen capture of its display. Xirus will show any other wireless routers in your neighborhood and the channels they're set to. If you have a neighboring router on the same channel, it may be causing interference for you.

I'm having connection problems. I wouldn't have noticed the yellow flagged item in Device Manager, but when I did, I thought maybe it had something to do with my connectivity issues. Here is the log, thanks for the explanation, jc:

I have read that, but I also read it did pertain to some people who were having connectivity issues, so I wasn't sure and thought I'd check it out.

I always have 'Excellent' signal when I check the networks, so I don't think I'm too far away from the router. It could be interference, though. The router was brand new and I got it at the same time as my computer, and I've been having connectivity problems since the day I set it up (and re-set it, etc...). So, I don't think it's because the router is old. It could be a cruddy router - lol - I don't know, it's a D-Link. But, it's highly possible that it is an issue with the router and this Vista computer. I will check into updating the firmware for it, but then again is it possible that the firmware was out-of-date the day I took it out of the box? The neighbour/router interference could be a possibility too since I live closely (er, too close...) to other houses, and there are a lot of networks in the hood, from what I can see on my network display. I should rename my router to 'BACK OFF' - ha; or maybe 'GO AWAY'. I'm rambling... Thanks for your help Fred, I appreciate it. I might try running the Xirus you mentioned.

Part 2 - I checked my router firmware. Seems my router is phased out - BUT ; ), let me reiterate that I've had the connection problems since I got the router 4 years ago, so I don't think the 'phased out' factor is the reason for the problems. Not to say I may not get a new router soon...I did check to see what the latest firmware is (was), and it's 1.04. Odd since my current version is 2.00. Is it possible that the newer version numbers go down instead of up? Should I up(down?)grade from 2.00 to 1.04? Not sure what to do since they are no longer offering support on my abacus, I mean, my router. ha

The number for firmware versions increase as they get newer so don't bother downgrading. You can still have interference even though you have a good signal if another router in your area has a decent signal and is on the same channel as yours. Run Xirus and post a screen cap of it scanning your neighborhood. That will show which channels your neighbors are using. That is the first thing I'd do if you called me to fix the problem. Interference can also come from other devices like microwaves, cordless phones, baby monitors, etc, which all use the 2.4Ghz frequency.

I downloaded the Xirus. Very cool. It feels like I'm invading my neighbours' privacy by publicly posting their names, could I send the screen capture to you by pm or email? I will say a lot of us are using the same channel.

Great, I was going to suggest that. I was just checking to see if you can send attachments through PMs and you can't.

Looking at the first 2 entries in the list - the DLink router then Arcadyan - they both have great signals and both are on channel 11. Go into your Dlink router setup page and find the Wireless Settings page. Change your channel to 6 and save your settings.

If you don't know how to get into the router setup page, post the router model.

About the first two entries. The first one is me, and the second one, the neighbour just moved in a couple of months ago, so the wireless network is new on their part. I was having connection problems long before they came along. But, yes, I will change the channel to see if my connection does improve.

I should be ok getting into the router setup, but if I have problems I'll let you know. Thanks very much.

Hi Fred, I changed my wireless settings to channel 6. I will let you know if that improves my ability to stay connected.

Dee, are you using the Intel Pro Set software to connect to your wireless network or are you using the built in Windows software?
