Microsoft has a mysterious and somewhat secretive event planned for Monday, and tonight rumors about just what the company will be announcing are starting to fly. They began with The Wrap reporting that it heard the company would be announcing a Microsoft-manufactured tablet, All Things D followed with its own sources saying Microsoft wanted to take on the iPad directly, and finally we have analysis from Mary Jo Foley pointing in a slightly different — but still intriguing — direction. She suggests that Microsoft may aim not for Apple, but Amazon. There's quite a lot of smoke here, but is there fire? More to the point, is there a competitor not to the iPad, but to the Kindle Fire?

Microsoft to launch its own branded Windows 8 tablet?

There's already been tons of speculation and rumors about what Microsoft might be revealing on Monday. As we reported on Thursday, Microsoft has sent out invites to members of the media for what it claims is a major announcement on Monday in Los Angeles. The event comes just two weeks after the company's E3 2012 press event in LA.

The entertainment-based website TheWrap.com claims to have heard via unnamed sources that Microsoft will reveal plans for a "Microsoft-manufactured tablet" at the event, possibly running on Windows RT (also known as Windows 8).

That rumored 'Microsoft tablet' - what if it's not a Windows tablet?

The guesses on Microsoft's June 18 announcement are continuing to fly fast and furiously (if not fluidly).

The latest round is centering on Microsoft's big announcement being some kind of a Microsoft-manufactured tablet. If these rumors are true, I'm wondering whether the coming device might be more of a rival to the Amazon Kindle Fire than the iPad.

Microsoft plots entry into tablet trade

Microsoft will launch its own tablet device next week, entering the booming slate market without the help of a separate hardware manufacturer, it has been claimed.

The company has promised to make a major announcement at an event on Monday, 18 June said to be related to its tablet strategy. Sources close to the matter say Microsoft will unveil an own-brand iPad rival, The Wrap reports.

Whisperers reckon Microsoft's forthcoming fondleslab will front Windows RT, the version of Windows 8 coded to run on Arm microprocessors.

Rumor: Microsoft prepping Windows 8 tablet for Monday launch

Microsoft and Apple have one of the longest-running and fiercest rivalries in the modern technology industry.

Indeed, the rivalry goes back decades to a time when both Steve Jobs and Bill Gates were just starting their respective companies. However, a new battlefield has emerged in recent years. Mobile - where Redmond and Cupertinio are going head-to-head in a brave new world of smartphone and tablets.

Apple currently fields the most popular tablet with its slick iPad, and the iPhone is one of the most popular handsets. Obviously, Microsoft wants some of the action.
