Hello, :smile9:

I have been referred to you for assistance to see if you are able to assist me with an issue I have been experiencing regarding my internet disconnecting while using it.

I can usually login to one or two sites (tabs) successfully before I get a message saying that there is no internet connection, then I have to run the trouble shooter to reconnect.
The common "fixed" message from the trouble shooter usually states "The default gateway is not available. ..Fixed!".

I am running Windows 8.1.
My machine is FREE of Malware (just completed the long process of this cleanup).
The
following steps have been exhausted so far in an attempt to resolve the disconnecting Internet issue.

- Flushed DNS Cache, reset TCP/IP stack
- Power cycled and reset router
- Reinstalled wireless Network Adapter
- Ran CHKDSK and SFC (3 times, all errors eventually repaired)
- Ran Windows Repair AIO
- Troubleshooted in clean boot environment

Any assistance you can provide will be much appreciated!

Thank you, Kara

Hello and welcome to Sysnative,

I am assuming you are connected wirelessly. Does the same issue occur when connected over Ethernet? Are any other devices on your WiFi network experiencing the same issues?

The idea here is to establish if the fault is with your wireless card, wireless router or some kind of interference from nearby devices.

Regards,
Stephen

Hi Stephen,

Thank you for replying to me. :smile9:

Yes, I am connected wirelessly. No other devices are having this issue.
While previously attempting to resolve this issue during Malware cleanup, I may have connected via ethernet, however, I will have to test it again.
One important thing to note, several things were done to narrow down the internet disconnect issue and during the process it stayed connected just fine, however, when we did an internet/browser cleanup, DNS flush, etc, the disconnect issue returned. It was very curious and why I have been referred to you.

Another bit to note (it may or may not be related), a new issue appeared during the previous attempt to identify the internet disconnect issue ...when I attempt to login to Yahoo!, the login ID from another site auto populates where my yahoo! id should be. It happens even after I clear the history, login info, etc., login correctly, close out and attempt to login again (this is the step it happens).

I will test the Ethernet connection for disconnect issues and have info for you on our next communication.

Thanks!

Hi Kara,

If you could test with Ethernet that would be great. If you can maintain a solid connection with Ethernet then we'll work on the Wireless card. If you have issues with both Ethernet and WiFi then we'll go down a different path.

Network issues are very hard to debug so I'm going to try and collect a few different logs to see if any of them have anything interesting in. Let's start with the Event Viewer logs:

- open Event Viewer (eventvwr.msc)
- expand the Custom Views category (left click on the > next to the words "Custom Views")
- right click on Administrative Events
- select "Save all Events in Custom View as..."
- save the file as Admin.evtx
- zip up the file (right click on it, select "Send to", select "Compressed (zipped) folder")
- upload it with your next post (if it's too big, then upload it to a free file-hosting service and post a link here).

Next, you mentioned that you ran SFC and it repaired some errors. I'll just check over that log and see what SFC did as well. It probably isn't related but it's worth checking too.

Export CBS folder

  1. Browse to the folder C:\Windows\Logs
  2. Right-click on the CBS folder, and select Copy.
  3. Go back to your Desktop, right-click on it, and select Paste. You should now see a copy of the CBS folder appear on your Desktop called CBS.
  4. Right-click on this new folder, and navigate through Send to, and select Compressed (zipped) folder.
  5. A new file, also called CBS (CBS.zip), but this time with a different icon, will be created.
  6. Attach this new file to your next post.

Kind regards,
Stephen

Hi Stephen,

I tested the internet connection via the WiFi...everything worked fine...no disconnects. It just doesn't make sense, however, I am confident we'll suss out the issue together. :s2:

I opened the Event Viewer and followed the instructions you provided. When I went to save, it gave me a box asking if I wanted to display in any languages. Regardless what I selected, when I hit OK I got an error box stating "The system cannot find the file specified." I'm not sure why it is doing that, so if you have additional suggestions on getting the information saved & to you, I'm open to them.

As for the SFC logs, I'm not sure if you have a way of checking them on your end or if you need me to send results to you. I have three results/log files saved (2 may be the same file with different names) and am attaching in case it helps.

I was able to save & compress the CBS files as requested, though I'm unsure if it attached correctly. It showed it was uploading (on both attempts), however, nothing appeared to say the file was attached. If you did not receive it, please provide additional instructions on getting it to you properly.

With gratitude...Kara

Hi jcgriff2,

I am having difficulty downloading the app you sent.
My antivirus & malware apps keep blocking the download stating it is malware and is a threat to my computer.

What next?

Hi -

Blocking an EXE from downloading is not all that uncommon. Sorry to hear that you're having such problems downloading it.

Let's go around the security software. :)

I zipped it up for you and attached it to this post.

Download the attached zip; extract it to Desktop. RIGHT-click on the EXE; select "Run as Administrator"

A Notepad will open. Save the Notepad text file and attach it to your next post.

Hi again,

It seems all of the previous work I did to clean up malware and ensure my computer is protected is working...it was blocked again. lol

I was able to download and extract, however, when I selected Run As Administrator the anti-virus kicked in and did not allow further attempts to extract successfully. Now when I attempt to extract I get "Error 0x8004005: Unspecified Error."

I'll await your word as to how to proceed.

With gratitude,
Kara

Hi Kara. . .

I don't know what to tell you at this point other than to temporarily disable your system's security. The app takes <10 seconds to run and will report very detailed info about your wifi set up including driver info & signal strength.

Honestly, I don't know what security you're running, but you should have the ability to run any app that you wish to run.

I wrote the app in 2011 and it has been download thousands of times by others since then.

Regards. . .

John

Thank you John,

After working so diligently to clean the "gunk" from my computer, I'm sure there was a bit of trepidation on my (and my computers) part. Since I already downloaded the file, I was able to click around, temporarily disable protection, get past the Windows Smart Screen (?) protection to get it to run. It ran successfully (and oh so quickly)...the results are below.

Hi Kara -

Everything looks fine with IPCONFIG. The other report shows a September 2013 Broadcom driver -
Code:
Driver : BCM43142 Wireless Network Adapter
 Vendor : Broadcom
 Provider : Broadcom
 Date : 9/28/2013
 Version : 6.30.223.181
... but doesn't provide a driver name.

What is the make and exact model number of your laptop (look on label on bottom if necessary)? If you can check support manufacturer site for a driver update - great; otherwise please post the info and I'll see what I can find.

I'm also wondering if the "severity" (for lack of a better term) of your security software is causing interference here.

What security software are you running/installed?

Regards. . .

Hi John,

I followed your instructions to check for updates, however, when I came back to the forum your reply seems to be missing from the thread...odd.

There was an update waiting for my computer and was able to run it successfully, I hope it's the driver update you mentioned.

My computer: Sony-VAIO-SVF15A16CXB OS: 8.1
After I ran the update it had me verify the update/version was successful: New Version 4.11.1.11210

The security/software on my system has been on it since I got the computer. Webroot & Malwarebytes Premium
I had no issues in the beginning, this is something that has appeared over time. I will say I did fail to renew my antivirus immediately when it expired a couple of months ago (an oversight on my part), which prompted a malware cleanup prior to contacting you and how I came to you.

I have to step out for a bit and will test the connection more thoroughly this afternoon when I return and let you know if I find anything.
Also, I will await your word on any next steps.

With gratitude...Kara

Hi Kara,

Sorry for not getting back sooner, I've been busy with exams.

Regarding event viewer logs, can you please follow the BSOD Posting Instructions: BSOD Posting Instructions. I know you don't have BSOD issues, but the information it collects will be useful.

The CBS folder is likely too big to upload here, so if you can upload it to Dropbox, OneDrive or similar, that would be fantastic.

Thanks,
Stephen

Hi Kara. . .

Yes, please follow Stephen's request about the BSOD Posting Instructions. As Stephen said, the info the app generates/collects may in fact be very useful to us in helping you solve the wifi Internet disconnect problem.

One other item that I noticed in the output you pasted into your previous post was that the router signal was measured at 90%. Usually I see it at 99% or 100%.

A few questions, please:
  1. How far away from the router is your laptop?
  2. What is between the router and laptop, e.g., walls, furniture, other, etc...
  3. Is the router above the laptop, i.e., is the router on a different floor or on top of a cabinet?
A little story. . .

My mom's router is > 100 feet from her laptop. She has never had a problem with Internet connectivity until recently when she mentioned to me that her Internet connection would sometimes disconnect. The Internet provider (cable company) came out and declared all was fine after replacing the router. However, that same night, the Internet connection dropped again several times.

I brought her laptop into the living room where the router was located and experienced -0- dropped Internet connections over an 8 hour period. All of this was very perplexing because nothing had changed - location-wise, anyway. The router was in the living room where it has been for years; the laptop in the study.

A quick & basic diagram of my mom's house -

2015-01-14_wifi_diagram.png

As you can see from the diagram (sorry for the crude drawing - I'm not very good at drawing!), the signal has to either travel through the many walls or perhaps it goes down the hallway; not sure.

I used the app that you ran to measure the signal strength. It is typically around 90% - just like yours. You may think 90% is "high enough", but turns out -- not always.

In my mom's case, the answer turned out to be the cabinet that the router sat on. The old cabinet was ~6' high and the router sat on top of it, so the wifi signal went out and down. The new cabinet was just 3-4' high and was just low enough coupled with the distance between her laptop + router to result in the dropped Internet connections. Her wifi signal strength these days is usually >95%. (Please note: I am not saying or even implying that you need 90% signal strength to have trouble-free, constant uninterrupted wifi Internet. There is no magic number).

Once the router was placed on top of a higher cabinet in the living room, all was fine and mom has enjoyed 100% Internet connectivity since.

Given that your Ethernet is fine (no Internet connectivity drops) and that your wifi signal strength was captured at 90% the moment the app ran (it likely may be variable and if you were to run the app over & over, we may see a variable signal strength), I think this will turn out to be a signal strength case or driver related.

Lastly -apologies, but I'm not following you about my post reply missing. Can you please explain a little more about this? Thanks.

Regards. . .

John

In reviewing your post containing the output of the app, I just noticed that there were in fact two wifi signal strength measurements.

One was 90%, as I had mentioned. The other - 82% -
Code:
    Name : Wi-Fi
Description : BCM43142 Wireless Network Adapter
    SSID : 2WIRE921
    Radio type : 802.11g
    Channel : 10
    Receive rate (Mbps) : 54
 [COLOR="#FF0000"]   Signal                 : [B][FONT=Meiryo Ui]82%[/FONT][/B][/COLOR]

My questions about laptop distance from the router plus interference items (walls, etc...) between the router and the laptop just became more important.

Regards. . .

Hi Stephen & John,

Stephen, it's good hearing from you and I do hope exams are going well! Glad to have you back. :smile9:

I followed your instructions for BSOD instructions, however, I am getting an error on step #3. Type or paste perfmon /report into the CMD screen | save as HTML file
I am able to pull up the CMD screen and type perfmon /report just fine, however, either the instructions are a bit confusing to me or I am having an actual issue running it. I do not see where I can save as HTML file and the instructions do not say "press enter" after typing perfmon /report. When I do press enter to run the screen I get: "Error: an error occured while attempting to generate the report. The operator or administrator has refused the request."
If you are able to provide more direction for this, that would be most helpful.

John,
I did see the low numbers on the report when I sent it. Thanks for the drawing...it was fabulous and got your message across just fine! ;-)
For about the past month, I have had the laptop in the same room with the router (living room) and currently, am about 8 feet away from it with no obstruction (same distance I was when I ran the report I sent you) and is about a foot and a half off the floor on a shelf under the tv with other equipment (dvr, PS3, etc.). I usually have the laptop in my office, which is about 20 feet away, and often the connection is intermittent. Even having it this close now, it still drops periodically.

The issue first appeared to happen about once a day or so when I would first connect for the day. As time went on, it would disconnect several times throughout the day. Today, it is fine. Also, I asked my husband if he has had connection issues, he said he has not. I worked on cleaning his computer of malware about a month or so ago and had no connection issues with his computer during the process (about 3 weeks).

I am hoping one of the reports will provide more information once you have them.

Regarding the missing post, when I logged back into Sysnative to respond to your message yesterday, your post was just not there. Nothing. Just my previous post to which you replied then the quick reply box. I see it is there now, but it really was not there yesterday no matter how much I looked for it. It was just very odd.

I will await instruction on how to proceed from here.

Much gratitude to you both!
~Kara

Hi Kara,

Ignore the Perfmon for now, the important bit is the collection app.

Also, if you could upload the CBS folder to a file sharing service such as Dropbox or OneDrive that would be great.

Hello,

I just realized something today that will hopefully provide more information.
It seems there is somewhat of a pattern with the internet dropping off when I first use my computer. The past few days I noticed that access will be fine for a bit, then about 15 minutes into using it it'll drop or disconnect. Today when I got the message I went in to toubleshoot it, but the troubleshooter came back with a message that it couldn't find anything wrong with the connection and the connection was fine again. However, the other day when it dropped about 15 minutes in and I ran the troubleshooter, it had to reset the connection.

It's all very curious to me. :noidea:

~With gratitude...Kara
