In advance sorry if there is information missing or if there is too much at any point, please tell me if there is.

So for the last couple of days my internet connection to my pc has been turning off at 21:30.

The connection to my pc is a bit weird (as I am in a separate building), I have a virgin media superhub 2 router connected to a ZyXel powerline (I think they are 500Mbps, but I am not sure) which then picks up again in the garage. From there a Ethernet cable connect to a netgear gs116 switch which then connects to my pc via cable.

Weirdly when my internet connection stops, I am still connected to the network and other devices on the network, even those connected to the switch, still have internet connection. This is why at first I thought it was my dad limiting my internet again, however after looking at the superhub page there are no blocks in place. Just in case I spoofed mac address and changed Ip address (Which have now been changed back), this did not work either.

I then checked event viewer to see if there were any errors at 21:30 and there is no error in the past week at the time.
Next I thought it may be some sort of virus, so I ran a Eset and Malware bytes scan, which came up with nothing.

I then changed my DNS servers to Google's 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4 (Getting desperate at this point) which made my connection unable to resolve hostnames (See screenshot), however using open DNS or allowing windows to do its thing was fine with resolving.
Weirdly my connection to teamspeak remains fine and I can talk to people, however if I disconnect I cannot rejoin.

I also tried ipconfig /release, renew, flushdns.

Just to add another possibly useless or detrimental stage to the list I also created another user to see if I got any connection from there.

I took some screenshots last night to compare this morning when I have connections. The output from IPconfig/all is exactly the same.

Hello there,

Is it at exactly 21:30 that you're getting disconnected from the internet? Were you able to go back after a few minutes? What's the time interval that you're able to go back and use the internet?

Exactly 21:30.
Not a few minutes, at least hours, was on trying to fix it till about 22:30 last night, works in the mornings, although haven't been on before 8 since it started.

What internet activities (e.g. gaming, video streaming, etc.) are you on during the disconnection? How many Members around that time are heavily utilizing the broadband connection?

Gaming, music streaming, and talking on team speak. Only me using anything heavy, possibly another person video streaming.

I'm thinking that Virgin must have placed a cap restriction during that time. You may try to experiment around that time and not to use any of those activities that hogs the bandwidth but other web apps that doesn't utilize that much data. You may also contact you ISP, and I don't know they will deny it or not. :grin1:

Thinking about it, t seems like the restrictions on the router seem to still be active. Even though you looked at them and they're disabled, it seems they're still working.

Was 9:30 the time of the restriction? Are you sure he didn't set a restriction on any other router/switch/whatever? This is why I suggested a different router (surely you have some lying around knowing you :p)

I did contact them about it, but they ended up transferring me to the support that costs, and who needs them when you have forums? Ill have a play around tonight.
Virgin don't do any type of blocking that I didn't attempt to spoof around (I think) however Ill have a look for another router.
Also thanks to both of you :grin1:

For what ever reason that might be, any ISPs can do such a thing. Again, they may or may not inform you. :grin1:

If you can't find any other router, and if you're allowed to fiddle with the router settings as I can tell that you do..... backup the current setting and do a reset to the factory default, see if it that would help.

I don't know if it helps but I'm on Virgin fibre at uni and don't experience anything like this - even when I went over 200GB downloaded in a week. The only data caps they (publicly) enforce are for uploading only.

You meant restored the router to the factory default, correct?
Right, restoring to default fixed it.
Great news.....glad we could helped.
