Download SFCFix.exe (by niemiro) and save this to your Desktop.
Download the file below, SFCFix.zip, and save this to your Desktop. Ensure that this file is named SFCFix.zip - do not rename it.
Save any open documents and close all open windows.
On your Desktop, you should see two files: SFCFix.exe and SFCFix.zip.
Drag the file SFCFix.zip onto the file SFCFix.exe and release it.
SFCFix will now process the script.
Upon completion, a file should be created on your Desktop: SFCFix.txt.
Copy (Ctrl+C) and Paste (Ctrl+V) the contents of this file into your next post for me to analyse please - put [CODE][/CODE] tags around the log to break up the text.

SFC Scan

Click on the Start button and in the search box, type Command Prompt
When you see Command Prompt on the list, right-click on it and select Run as administrator
When command prompt opens, copy and paste the following commands into it, press enter after each

sfc /scannow

Wait for this to finish before you continue

copy %windir%\logs\cbs\cbs.log %userprofile%\Desktop\cbs.txt
This will create a file, cbs.txt on your Desktop. Please attach this to your next post.

Hi SoftwareManiac -
When I followed your instructions, the system indicated it needed to restart. Before it completed the restart, I got a BSOD. Next, I turned the machine off and then back on again, at which point Windows indicated there were problems and it immediately went into a startup repair. Startup repair then needed a reboot also, and after it rebooted, Windows appeared to boot normally. Per your instructions, I had created a restore point, but I was unable to run the system restore due to the error message: "The program cannot start because SRCORE.DLL is missing..." I also noticed that the file SFCFIX.txt was not created on the desktop.

What next? I'm hoping the startup repair has the system in a stable condition, as I am helping a relative with this problem remotely using TeamViewer, and they need their machine in working order!

Hello, I'm very sorry that this happened. It looks like the system was severely corrupted and that we'll have to try something different:

Step#1 - FRST Scan
1. Please download Farbar Recovery Scan Tool and save it to your Desktop.
Note: You need to run the 64-bit Version so please ensure you download that one.
2. Copy it to a clean USB drive.
3. Insert Windows Disk and boot to Command Prompt.
4. Once at the Command Prompt, enter cd E: (E: being your USB drive letter).
5. Once you see E:, please enter FRST64.exe and press Enter.
6. FRST should launch.
7. Please ensure you place a check mark in the Addition.txt check box at the bottom of the form before running (if not already).
4. Press Scan button.
5. It will produce a log called FRST.txt in the same directory the tool is run from (which should now be the USB)
6. Please copy and paste log back here.
7. Another log (Addition.txt - also located in the same directory as FRST64.exe) will be generated Please also paste that along with the FRST.txt into your reply.

Hello again, softwaremaniac -
I'm trying to assist my relative long distance using TeamViewer with this issue. Unfortunately, they are not very tech savvy, and don't know if they have access to a Windows Disk. I will be visiting them, but not until the end of August! That said, it appears that their system is currently functioning for them (with the exception of being unable to use Internet Explorer), so rather than initiate further testing that may result in another BSOD, I think it's best for me to wait until I can be in front of the machine to continue with your instructions in person rather than remotely.

Will there be any problem with me accessing your last instructions on the forum if I wait until August to do so?

Hello again, softwaremaniac!
Attached are the results of 2 SFC scans. I completed a scan on April 10th, and then another today after my aunt told me that when she restarted her computer, Windows indicated that repairs needed to be done which were automatically completed. She says now that IE is working again (I'm not clear on what issue she was having). So...the latest scan is the one named 180413cbs.txt and the earlier one is 180410cbs.txt.

At this point, I don't know if the original error I wrote about is still occurring or not. Thanks for whatever assistance you are able to offer. Best,

the latest CBS.log is clean. Therefore, there were no corruptions detected. Can you please attempt to update again and attach CBS.log if it fails?

I checked the Windows Update history and the last time the system attempted to install KB 4074598 (and failed) was on April 9th. Until then, the system had been attempting to install that update daily, since it was shown as an important, not optional, update. Since April 9th, there have been no attempts to install it, and a search I completed today for updates indicates that there are no important updates to install. Also, a number of other updates that had failed to install in the past now show as completed. So, since the most recent CBS log was clean and showed no corruptions, and since there are no new important updates to install, it seems all is AOK currently. I don't really understand why, but I'm glad that it seems to be repaired...at least for now!
