Hi everyone!

I'm a bit at a loss having tried a lot of things from Googling Windows forums until somebody recommended you guys. Appreciate anyone even looking at this very text. :)

Basically, the issue is Windows Update not updating anything anymore, instead throwing errors like "Installation error" (or something close to that, it's in Dutch for me), see the attached screenshot. It happens for all the smaller updates you see, but for the big Windows update (23H2) as well.

Tried some tools to reset Windows Update, this didn't help. Also tried downloading the Windows 11 ISO to do the Windows Update manually, which in turn didn't let me mount the ISO with the useful error message "There has been a problem mounting this file". I have a AM Ryzen 7 5800U x64 processor, currently using Windows 11 22H2, updates seem to have been broken since a month or two, that's at least when the last updates correctly installed. Those don't seem out of the ordinary. Troubleshooting on the pc itself didn't help etiher.

I read the instructions and did the scf and dism. Those are attached.
Is there any option any of you see to what I can do to fix this? I have a bit of a digital understanding, but am not too good at hardware issues.

Thanks in advance!

EDIT: Oops, forgot to look up the error codes I wanted to put in the title, those are "0x800703f1" and "0x80070103".

Hi and welcome to Sysnative,

Upload your DRIVERS Hive
  • Navigate to C:\Windows\System32\config and locate the DRIVERS file.
  • Please copy this file to your desktop.
  • Note: If you receive an error that this file is in-use, simply reboot your computer and try again.
  • Right-click on this file on your desktop and select Send To > Compressed (zipped) folder. This will create a file named DRIVERS.ZIP on your desktop.
  • If the file is too large to upload here, upload the file to www.wetransfer.com and post the link in your next reply.

Hi,

Replace Drivers Hive Manually

Warning: this fix is specific to the user in this thread. No one else should follow these instructions as it may cause more harm than good. If you are after assistance, please start a thread of your own.
  1. Download DRIVERS.ZIP and save to your desktop.
  2. Right-click on it and select Extract all.... Make sure the "Show extracted files when complete" is checked and click Extract.
  3. Now we have the DRIVERS file that we will be using to replace your current one.
  4. Navigate to C:\Windows\System32\config
  5. Right-click on the current DRIVERS file and select rename. Rename it to DRIVERS.bad.
Note: If you get an error that the file is in use, reboot your computer and then try again.
  6. Take the file from the Drivers folder on your desktop and paste it into C:\Windows\System32\config

Afterwards reboot the system and attempt to update. If it fails attach the latest CBS logs and the following logfile.

Upload the setupapi.dev.log file
  • Open Windows Explorer and browse to the C:\Windows\INF folder.
  • Right-click on the file setupapi.dev.log and choose Send to > Compressed (zipped) folder.
  • Now the message will appear, "Windows cannot create the Compressed (zipped) Folder here. Do you want it to be placed on the desktop instead?"
  • Click on the Yes button here.

  • Attach the file setupapi.dev.zip in your next reply.

Hi! Your new file helped, and I got to update everything, including Windows. One issue I suspect could be due to the update file, is that I’ve lost the ability to use Wifi now.

It’s gone and I cannot connect to Wifi at all, doesn’t even show the option. Only ‘allows’ Bluetooth networking options. Any ideas what this caused?

There seem to be more problems. I cannot open Explorer without it crashing instantly and trying to project to another screen also gives the message that it isn’t possible because of the driver not existing (or to use a different video card).

Hi,

Please run the following DISM command in an elevated prompt and post the result. If it fails attach a new copy of the CBS log.
Code:
DISM /online /cleanup-image /RestoreHealth

I ran the command (DISM), it gave the message that it ran successfully. Tried to get to the logs but I have no idea how now since things seem to get progressively worse.

Currently can’t click anything on the tsk bar at the bottom of the desktop, apart from the program icons, so getting to screens or even the cmd is hard now. Explorer is also still not loading.

Any ideas how to get around this and get it to you? I’m kind of thinking, at what point would a full system reset become a realistic option.

Yes, I’m in safe mode now (got there through cmd). Did appear to start after doing all the updates, I believe I still had internet access then.

Still can’t open Explorer and the left bottom side of icons (where you’d usually see the time and date and network icons, etc) is also not visible now.

Looking at my previous screenshot, it might have been 23H2 as well, but I’m not sure.

For lack of internet access, I’ll do it like this. To my surprise, it says 22H2, I’m sure I updated to a later version (even got a prompt asking me to explore what’s new).

I have removed the picture because your email-adresss was visible. Are you able to connect the system with an LAN cable? If so I would try to perform a cloud reset.

Thank you. I did put in a networking cable but don’t see any response. No connection and not in the command line looking up available networks either. All blank.

Then I would try a local reset first to see if it will resolve the current issues.

No, you can use the keep my files option so it will only refresh the current installation. But making a backup is always recommended.

Would that be the same as going to the screen by commanding “rstrui.exe” since I cannot get there through the Config screens?

No rtsrui.exe will launch System Restore, a reset / refresh will reinstall Windows without losing personal data.
