No, I didn't. I thought IE11 was a prerequisite, either way. Are you saying it's not & I can use the Media Creation Tool instead ?

If you use the MCT, Internet Explorer 11 shouldn't be a prerequisite.

Also, does my inability to install IE11 indicate my Windows 7 is not in tip top shape ? Could that compromise any Windows 10 upgrade ?

I've already upgraded several other PCs to Windows 10 via Windows Update & kept all my setting, etc. Would using MCT work the same way or do I have to wipe this computer & perform a clean install ?

Not being able to install Internet Explorer 11 tells us that there's indeed a problem with your Windows 7 installation, but this won't compromise your Windows 10 install since the whole system is being replaced. And you'll also have the option to keep all your programs, data and settings by upgrading to Windows 10 via the MCT.

Alright :) Let me know how it goes!

So, far Windows 10 would not install due to boot partition size. I changed the boot partition to my C drive from the hidden 100MB one & am retrying to install.

Installing Win10 didn't work.

The procedure was going along fine; it got to a point where there was a blue screen with a notice that the installation process would reboot my PC a few times. Then, suddenly, I was back to my Win7 desktop without any reboot; the installation just seemed to stop, no error messages or any other kind of messages from Win10 at all. It was as if I hadn't even tried the upgrade.

After no disk activity for a while with the CPU at idle, I started Windows Update. When it opened up Windows Update said,

"Windows 10 couldn't be installed"

"Failed: 1 update"

"Error(s) found:
C19000101-20017 Windows Update encountered an unknown error.
Get help with this error"

"Most recent check for updates: Today at 11:26 AM
Updates were installed: Today at 8:35 PM (Failed). View update history
You receive updates: For Windows and other products from Microsoft Update"

I used Media Creation Tool for my upgrade.

Before my last try at Windows 10, I marked my C drive as 'active' in Disk Management & rebooted to my Windows 7 Repair Disk CD to make C the boot partition. But, I still have the little 100MB partition at the 'front' of the drive & I set it as 'unallocated' in Disk Management.

This is on a Samsung 850 EVO 250GB SSD. Samsung likes to keep 10% of the SSD for 'overprovisioning' & the 'last' 23.29GB are also unallocated, for this purpose.

I also have a Seagate 1,000GB SSHD as drive D, my data drive. Both of these are run through an Asmedia PCIe 1-lane SATA 3 controller (The PC is a refurbished HP 6005 Pro & uses an AMD RS880 chipset).

So, I'll have to push the C drive to the 'front' to gobble up the former 100MB 'reserved partition' before I even try changing to GPT. I plan to use 'MiniTool Partition Wizard Free' to expand to the 'front'. []Page Not Find | MiniTool Partition Wizard

Is there any easy way to tell an MBR disk from a GPT disk ? I don't see anything in Disk Management about it.

Do you think the SATA PCIe controller is a problem ?

Should I switch both my SSD & the SSHD to GPT ?

I will wait to hear back from you before I go to make any changes.

Yay, I've got Windows 10 installed & running !

But, I didn't convert my drives to GPT partitions.

I looked at the article, "Windows Setup: Installing using the MBR or GPT partition style" & it talked about a mismatch between MBR or GPT partition types & UEFI or Legacy BIOS modes. But I don't have a UEFI-based PC. Also, to convert MBR to GPT with AOMEI Partition Assistant I would have to buy the Professional version for $49 since converting is not supported in their Standard free version.

So, I used the shade tree mechanic's old standby: troubleshoot by doing the cheapest things first.

1. I used MiniTool Partition Wizard Free to absorb the former System Partition but now unallocated 100MB space at the beginning of my SSD into the C drive.

Then, in the article "How to: Troubleshoot common Setup and Stop Errors during Windows 10 Installation", methodology for error 0xC1900101-0x20017, I:

2. I disabled my Avast Pro antivirus,

3. I disconnected all my USB stuff except a basic USB/touchpad keyboard,

4. I disconnected my ethernet cable,

5. I used the Windows 10 installation DVD I made with the Media Creation Tool.

Installation went smoothly. Then I shut down, reconnected my USB stuff & the ethernet cable. I booted back up, reenabled my Avast antivirus & let Windows update itself.

So, thank you for all your attention & help; it's working real good now !

Glad to see that you got your Windows 10 installation up and running Jeffrey :)

And no problem, you're welcome!
